Trying to work out if it is good or not. Does this look like a child that has artistic potential and how old would you expect the child that drew that to be?

I've seen worse in museums. Though I'm uncultured for Mumsnet 🤣 I'd say around 9.

Thereoughttobeclowns · 29/06/2023 19:35

I’d say 6 or 7.

Nooneknowswhatgoesonbehindcloseddoors · 29/06/2023 19:36

This is amazing. What I love about the first pictures if that they show real character. Even as a kid he captures something of his parents. There is this energy and fun in all the pictures. However I would never have imagined that the toddler would go on to produce the detailed work of the later pictures.

Ilikethewayyoumove90 · 29/06/2023 19:40

7

theelectricnorth · 29/06/2023 19:41

It’s hard to put an age on art because it varies so much between people. I am very not creative so could never draw something like that. Going by the average of what I have seen from children though, I would say they are in year 4 or 5 though.

Kelljo83 · 29/06/2023 19:45

I'd say 10 to 12 years old.

LeJasmin · 29/06/2023 19:46

Think most people have artistic potential if they find the right medium and have interesting things to say.

But am on the fence a bit about how much the ability to reproduce images has to do with artistic potential.

AnxiouslyWait · 29/06/2023 19:47

I’d say 7!

A child that enjoys art has artistic potential :)

Gagaandgag · 29/06/2023 19:47

5 or 6?! 😂

3luckystars · 29/06/2023 19:48

Tell us the age.

Daisybuttercup12345 · 29/06/2023 19:50

8 or 9.

DeliciouslyDecadent · 29/06/2023 19:51

I am wondering if this is a trick question and the OP drew it!😂

So, maybe the right age is about 26.

footiemum3 · 29/06/2023 19:51

Very difficult to tell without context and amount of teaching guidance given. It looks very similar to art work I see produced in after school art lessons given by a specialist art teacher. In such lessons this quality of work can be produced anything from 5-11 years. If the child enjoys art let them continue enjoying it and exploring other mediums.

nokidshere · 29/06/2023 19:51

In my 40+yrs of childcare I've seen children draw like that at 4 and children of 12 who wouldn't know where to start. It depends entirely on the child.

WinterCarlisle · 29/06/2023 19:52

My 52 month old drew this yesterday so I’m thinking the OP’s artist is a bit younger…..?

B1993 · 29/06/2023 19:52

8-9 would be my guess.

@amiaweirdoo, I do hope you tell us their actual age!

newusern1 · 29/06/2023 19:53

I think it’s much easier to copy something than create drawings from scratch. DS does pretty well at copying but is terrible at free style drawing

Ghosttofu99 · 29/06/2023 19:54

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/06/2023 19:03

Absolutely.

25 years an Art teacher with the best results in the city. Just like Englush or Maths it can be taught.

Well yes, anything can be taught to a reasonable standard but being taught maths won’t necessarily make you into Stephen Hawking and being taught English might not make you into Emily Brontë. (even though they all had to learn at some point too)

Conditiony · 29/06/2023 19:57

ManateeFair · 29/06/2023 17:07

Well, what's the rest of their artwork like? Is it all to this standard? Or is this a one off?

Also, did they draw this from their head, or did they copy it from an existing artwork that they had in front of them? I think that makes a massive difference, because if they're copying, then the composition, colours and proportions are right there in front of them and they just have to be reasonably competent at getting lines down on the page. Whereas if they drew this from memory or imagination, then tat might indicate a naturally artistic eye.

If it was a copying exercise, then I think it could feasibly be the work of a 7-8 year old, but I'd guess more like 10. If from memory then I'd say perhaps 10-12.

quite a few comments along these lines and it’s pure ignorance, learn about camera lucida and other techniques masters used and you’ll see there’s no shame in using photos references or painting from photos. If you don’t know anything about art don’t comment on it.

Thindog · 29/06/2023 19:59

I think there's a touch of adult interference or direction with this. It could be a child's work, probably 8 or 9, but details like the black lines and colouring suggest adult input.

Sunisshiningweatherissweet1 · 29/06/2023 18:48

Hard to tell because some styles of art done by adults can look like a child did it (in my opinion).
My son likes drawing, so I'd say the age of the child for the above picture is around 6.
My son is 11 and this is his drawing of our pet.

I love it!! 😍

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 29/06/2023 20:05

My DD thinks about 7.

Vintagecreamandcottagepie · 29/06/2023 20:06
