Trying to work out if it is good or not. Does this look like a child that has artistic potential and how old would you expect the child that drew that to be?

quite a few comments along these lines and it’s pure ignorance, learn about camera lucida and other techniques masters used and you’ll see there’s no shame in using photos references or painting from photos. If you don’t know anything about art don’t comment on it.

Do tell us about the source of your authority that enables you to ask others not to comment, @Conditiony?

PrueRamsay · 29/06/2023 20:12

Op still not back 😂

I do hope the "OP" is not a bored teenager bullying a classmate and ridiculing their drawing.

ShakeYourFeathers · 29/06/2023 20:17

No idea I'm in my 30s and can't paint/ draw as well as that 🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️

Well yes, anything can be taught to a reasonable standard but being taught maths won’t necessarily make you into Stephen Hawking and being taught English might not make you into Emily Brontë. (even though they all had to learn at some point too)

yeeeees🤔but we still got more A as was than the rest of the city. Usually with an A -C of above 95%

So, no not everyone was amazing, but they were of a very high standard. It used to drive me mad when l asked y7 what they’d drawn. The answer was usually ‘Romans’😖And what can you tell me about tone or shape? Total silence.

pristinequeen · 29/06/2023 20:22

8/9 very good for anyone below 12 I'd say

whataboutme77 · 29/06/2023 20:22

I'm waiting for the big reveal that it's actually an exhibit in the Tate or something 😆

My 52 month old drew this yesterday so I’m thinking the OP’s artist is a bit younger…..?

I would have been mildly impressed if you’d said 52 week old.

Luxell934 · 29/06/2023 20:24

As someone who's worked in primary schools for the past 10 years I would say some quite talented year 2's (6-7 year old) could have easily done this.

DollyTheFluffyOne · 29/06/2023 20:26

Is it a drawing from imagination or is it a copy of a picture?

LeJasmin · 29/06/2023 20:26

I say this, @Conditiony, because there is a long tradition of drawing a distinction between art, and illustration, and the differences between producing a reproduction of a thing, and producing a thing itself.

This isn't to pass judgement on which has greater merit, just to acknowledge the difference.

So this would seem a personally reasonable thing for PPs to discuss?

don't blame me because you spectacularly missed that the sarcasm was against the disappearing OP, nothing to do against a "child" who might or might not have drawn that. 😂

If nothing else, posters have said it's quite good for a 6 to 8 year old, how is that "nasty"?😂

SummerDawn2000 · 29/06/2023 20:30

I went to art college and uni with people who actively trained/practiced drawing like this. It could be any age. It’s a lovely drawing. It has expression and movement Really good

Arushandaflush · 29/06/2023 20:30

8-10? Waiting for the reveal that it was done by a 6 month old 🤣

MagnificentDelurker · 29/06/2023 20:31

Does not matter the age. He/She has artistic potential

your comments give off the vibe of a bored student

WiddlinDiddlin · 29/06/2023 20:38

Good isn't relevant.

Did it come out as the child intended?

Did the materials use work, produce the effects the child intended.

How does it match up to what the kid wanted to produce.

It could have been drawn by anyone between probably 5 and 100.

If they were aiming for hyper-realism, then no, its clearly crap.

If they were aiming to have super accurate proportions, skin tone, or perfect blending of what looks like oil pastel..... no, still crap.

But if they're happy, if they have achieved their goal, then it's good.

If someone else wanted to hang it on the wall and enjoys it, its good.

Far far technically worse pieces of art are hung, bought and sold for stupid money, than this - and thats because 'good' is not relevant. It's whether it speaks to someone, whether someone enjoys it, and... whether someone wants to buy into the hype of a particular artists name and work.

I'd say 8 to 10. Yes they are a good artist and may have potential!
