How many women do you know who doesn’t wear earrings?

Disclaimer: This is not to be taken too seriously and it’s not affecting my life in any shape or form!

So I’m 36 and don’t have earrings. Don’t like them. Don’t wear them. Don’t even have a holes in my ears. Even as a teenager when I guess you would beg to parents to pierce your ears, I passed that stage without any interest.

And funny enough, now when I’m adult I get ( not a lot but still ) remarks about it.

Like it’s some requirement for a woman to wear ones? Is it considered so normal that when you see someone without ones it’s like you discovered a whole new continent?

I don’t know, is it really that rare for a woman to not like earrings, not wear them, not have a wish to have them or not even pierce my ears?

That's weird, I don't wear them becuase I've developed an allergy to basically all metals and noone has ever commented on it. Ever. I am 39 if it matters.

ShockingLipstick · 28/06/2023 11:08

The right earrings can add beauty to the face, elongate neck or give width to a narrow long face. It really can change your look and make a plain outfit dressier.

Incidentally, I really don't like earrings on a man as I find it looks feminine and I like men to be traditionally masculine. I saw this TV guy on GMB awards replay, he was in a suit with the most stupid Harry Styles type gold little hoop earring (just the single one) with a dangling pearl. He looked utterly ridiculous.

LettingGoMovingOn · 28/06/2023 11:09

I never wear them. I had my ears pierced when I was 3....apparently I wanted it done. 🤔 I remember being made to wear them til I was about 10 and then refusing and never wearing them again. I don’t like how they look.

My teen daughter has never wanted her ears pierced. About half of my friends don’t wear them even if they have previously had their ears pierced.

BridgetRandomfuck · 28/06/2023 11:09

I've never had my ears pierced and generally no one's ever commented on it. However, when I was a teenager, one of my school friends and her family were totally amazed by it - I was round there one time and they practically couldn't believe it, and were jokingly threatening to take me to a jewellers then and there to get it done! Slightly bizarre...

OneTC · 28/06/2023 11:09

My mum never had her ears pierced, my OH has multiple holes in each ear but I can't remember the last time she wore earrings so they're probably sealed up. She does have a pierced nose though and wears a ring there.

I know some that have stopped wearing them because of taking them in and out for sport

UrsulaBelle · 28/06/2023 11:10

I do wear earrings, but small silver sleepers that I keep in and haven't worn anything else for 30 years. I used to wear more as a teen/20 something but I became allergic to nickel so can only wear gold or silver. I really don't notice them on others unless they wear big ones!

threecupsofteaminimum · 28/06/2023 11:11

My mum had my ears pierced when I was very little as apparently I didn't have any hair and in the 70s this was ok!

I never wear earrings as I wear glasses and I feel too chintzy with extra stuff going on!

Overall y nobody has ever commented on my not wearing earrings though! I'm intrigued as to why these people would ask!

WandaWonder · 28/06/2023 11:13

I don't wear them and dont remember comments from anyone about me or anyone else since the 1980's from memory

IAmAnIdiot123 · 28/06/2023 11:14

I don't wear them, I have never had anyone comment on the fact I don't wear them.

I also dont often wear make up and don't get comments about that either.

ColdHandsHotHead · 28/06/2023 11:16

I got mine done the week of my 18th birthday as my father wouldn't agree to it until then. Interestingly, my mother got hers done shortly after so that's one for Girl Power.

I don't always remember to wear earrings but I do like them. I once spent a couple of days when I lived in London looking to see how many women had pierced ears and nearly all of them did. Interestingly, Japanese women were the exception. I don't think I saw anyone Japanese with pierced ears.

Similarly, I had a nice manicure done when I was going to France one time, this would be about five years ago and I noted with interest that French women did not wear nail polish. I only saw two other women with their fingernails painted. I was really surprised.

Weird how these things go by nationality.

shootingstar1 · 28/06/2023 11:17

I have my lobes pierced but hated wearing earrings and felt they kept getting in the way so never wear them now. Instead I got my helix and daith pierced and love them . I've also got part of my ear tattooed 😊. Small and subtle but I like it

ChannelyourinnerElsa · 28/06/2023 11:19

I’m surprised too, I don’t think I know any female friends without pierced ears. The vast vast majority wear earrings daily too. But then most women I know in various sectors of my life wear watches, and other jewellery daily too.

I had my ears pierced at 14, and have worn earrings almost daily since. Either small diamond studs or pearls, or dress earring for events.

ChaToilLeam · 28/06/2023 11:19

I know quite a few women who have never had their ears pierced. I do though, and I love earrings. There seems to be a presumption that women all get this done at some point, you don’t see many earrings made for the non-pierced of war. I’ve converted a few pairs from stud to clip or screw fittings for friends who have received earrings they couldn’t otherwise wear.

ButImNotOldEnough · 28/06/2023 11:20

I’m 30, have had my ears pierced once (and only because DD wanted hers done and we got them done together). I had them out 2 weeks later, I couldn’t stand the feel of them. The holes closed up since and I won’t be getting them done again!

QueenOfWeeds · 28/06/2023 11:22

I have pierced ears but got out of the habit of wearing earrings when working in a SEND setting at a school. MIL has commented on it - I would be perfectly happy to be bought earrings but nobody ever does, because I rarely wear them.

Amillionlovesongslater · 28/06/2023 11:23

I had my ears pierced as a child but haven't worn earrings since I was a teenager. Would love to but for some reason one of ears is not higher than the other and I think it stands out when I wear earrings. Anyone else have this?? Never noticed on anyone else before.

Cakeorchocolate · 28/06/2023 11:23

I don't. I did when I was younger but stopped wearing them and they've all healed except 1 hole on 1 ear (I had 3 sets at one stage).
I'd very, very occasionally like to put a single set in now, but not enough to re-pierce the sealed one.

DanceMonster · 28/06/2023 11:25

I haven’t got my ears pierced and no one has ever commented on it.

mistermagpie · 28/06/2023 11:26

I'm surprised people comment on it, I have ten ear piercings and people rarely even comment on that, so I don't understand why anyone even notices people who don't have any.

I don't know how many of my friends have none, I only tend to notice people who have multiple or unusual piercings.

mrlistersgelfbride · 28/06/2023 11:26

I had my ears pierced when I was a 13 , 25 years ago. I used to love earrings but for the last decade or so I've just wore sleepers almost every day. I never think about it, or even them being there to be honest. I also never notice if people have their ears pierced or not.
My mum never had her ears pierced and used to say she felt like the only woman she knew who hadn't.
I'm going to look round the office now as a matter of interest 😂but anecdotally I think fewer women wear earrings now compared to 20/30 years ago.

dancinfeet · 28/06/2023 11:27

me, I have pierced ears from when I was a teenager- but after years of on off wearing them, letting the holes semi close up, and forcing studs back through them I realised I just don’t like the feel of them in my ears. Stopped wearing them about 8 years ago in my late 30s

amusedbush · 28/06/2023 11:28

I gave up on earrings in my early 20s because, for whatever reason, they age me massively. It doesn't matter what style I try, I immediately look like I'm 47 and on my way to an Important Business Meeting (nothing wrong with that when you're 47 but I'm 33!). Other people agree with me so it's not just a weird insecurity on my part.

It's moot anyway because I have stretched lobes so, aside from a few small gold rings in various bits of my ear cartilage, I just wear 16mm plugs in my lobes. However, nobody commented when I had bare ears.

My maternal auntie doesn't have pierced ears (needle phobia) and my mum does but she's allergic to pretty much everything in the world, so she has never worn earrings. I don't think people have commented but a couple of family members have bought them earrings for Christmas, I suppose on the assumption that everyone wears them.

ShockingLipstick · 28/06/2023 11:01

I think it's very unusual for a woman not to have her ears pierced unless she was a tomboy I guess or has sensory issues for example. I would be surprised if they aren't pierced but I wouldn't be surprised or bat an eyelid if a woman doesn't wear earrings as I know they can be uncomfortable or get in the way.

I think I have known 3 women who haven't had their ears pierced but they had unconventional views about many other things.

When your hair is up a pieced ear can look odd naked just a dot there sometimes the dot is crusty or black or stained from cheap earrings. I like wearing something on my ears if my hair is up.

See, I totally understand why people would think this. But I am very far from being a tomboy! And no sensory issues.

I put in my first post on this thread that I've never wanted them. I've just remembered that's not true - I wanted them done when I was around 8, but my parents were dead against it until I was at least 13. By the time I was 13, I'd got over wanting them done. I just didn't feel any particular desire to have them pierced - my mum offered a few times, but there was always other things I wanted to spend the money on instead!!

DahliaMacNamara · 28/06/2023 11:31

Never had my ears pierced either, and don't really notice it on other women unless they have particularly striking earrings. Very occasionally I wear clip-ons to formal occasions if my hair's long enough to wear up. The rest of the time my hair covers my ears anyway, so it seems a bit of a pointless faff.

DanceMonster · 28/06/2023 11:32

I also am not a ‘tomboy’, and have no sensory issues. I like nice jewellery, and own a fair bit which I wear regularly. I just don’t wear earrings.
