To think this is a suitable breakfast?

ARareKindaBear · 24/06/2023 08:40

For years I have not eaten breakfast, I never have appetite in a morning so just drink coffee and wait until lunch to eat.

Recently however I’ve discovered honey Greek yogurt and I’ve become a bit obsessed with it! So I’ve been eating 100g of Greek honey yogurt mixed with 5g of chopped mixed nuts every morning for breakfast. I love it!

My mum has now decided I clearly have an eating disorder as that isn’t a suitable breakfast apparently - I think it’s quite healthy?! No crappy sugars that you would get with cereal, protein, fibre in the nuts? Honey is good for you too surely?

AIBU to think a) it’s healthy and b) it’s better than nothing?!

Nothing wrong with it, a Greek breakfast.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 24/06/2023 08:44

It's fine, saying you have an eating disorder based on this alone is nuts.

Emmamoo89 · 24/06/2023 08:44

Nothing wrong with that. It's perfectly healthy x

misskatamari · 24/06/2023 08:45

sounds like a lovely breakfast, especially if you’re used to not eating any. In terms of the honey tho - is it honey flavoured yoghurt or are you adding actual honey to Greek yoghurt yourself, as that will obviously be better for you, and the flavoured yoghurt will likely have either added sugar or sweeteners. Overall it sounds like some great nutrients to start the day with tho, and definitely not something to be worrying about (healthier than a lot of cereals people eat I’m sure)

MagpiePi · 24/06/2023 08:49

You aren’t going to get much in the way of fibre and nutrients from 5g of nuts, and honey is still basically sugar, but there’s nothing wrong with it if you like it!

What does your mum think is a proper breakfast?

toastofthetown · 24/06/2023 08:52

If you’re enjoying it and not seeing any adverse health effects then it’s probably fine. I’d be concerned about the sugar levels though, if anything.

AIBU to think a) it’s healthy and b) it’s better than nothing?!
I wouldn’t be convinced it’s better than nothing. There’s a lot of evidence coming out about how intermittent fasting is good for you, and giving your gut a rest by reducing the window in which you consume food and caloric drinks provides benefits. As long as you’re not hungry and forcing yourself to excessively snack mid morning due to missing breakfast, skipping breakfast can be a healthy habit.

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 24/06/2023 09:23

Why 5g of nuts?

Tendu · 24/06/2023 09:25

I wouldn’t eat anything at breakfast if I didn’t want to. I’m like you and don’t fancy anything too early. Having said that, if I do have breakfast (weekends, usually), it is plain, full-fat Greek yoghurt with either sliced banana, raspberries or stewed rhubarb and seeds.

Okshacky · 24/06/2023 09:28

I have coffee in the morning and breakfast later after school runs and minor jobs. It suits me. Your Mum sounds like she has concerns about your eating. What’s the rest of the day like?

Thesearmsofmine · 24/06/2023 09:30

It sounds fine but i would be worried if you were weighing exactly 5g of nuts out every day.

badgermushrooms · 24/06/2023 09:35

5g of nuts is a very specific tiny measurement which makes me wonder if you're also restricting your food in other ways. Isn't that just a spoonful, and if so would you feel comfortable just free styling it rather than weighing? IMO unless you're on a diet for medical reasons it's a good idea not to get too pernickety about food quantities, it can mess with your mind.

NannyR · 24/06/2023 09:36

Sounds good - I would go for plain Greek yoghurt and add your own honey though, that way you can adjust and reduce the sweetness. Honey (especially the stuff you buy in a supermarket, locally produced raw honey might have some health benefits) is just nice tasting sugar syrup, there's nothing nutritious in it.

BonnieGlasses · 24/06/2023 09:39

I'm with your mum - it is odd that you're having such a small, low nutrient breakfast every single day.

TheGoogleMum · 24/06/2023 09:40

Sounds good as long as you enjoy it! Skipping breakfast isn't necessarily so terrible either, I used to to do intermittent fasting and would fast 8pm till 12noon

BaronessBomburst · 24/06/2023 09:42

I eat Greek yogurt with cinnamon and nuts/ seeds every morning. I don't bothering weighing or measuring anything though. I couldn't even tell you how many walnuts 5 grams was!

Floralnomad · 24/06/2023 09:44

I have a yoghurt and an options hot chocolate for breakfast everyday , it’s plenty

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 24/06/2023 09:45

That's a tiny breakfast and 5g of nuts is a very small and specific amount of food.

It sounds like something I would eat if I was desperately trying to lose weight or on a diet.

What are the rest of your meals like?

Blablabla1984 · 24/06/2023 09:49

Stick with it!! It's a lovely and gut-healthy breakfast!! Much healthier than the usual options we have or feed our children sadly.

Cereal is empty food full of sugar and supermarket bread we use for toast has a ridiculous amount of precessing. If your mum deems any of these to be a more suitable option, tell her that recently nutritionists have agreed that homemade pizza is a more balanced breakfast than either of those.

DelphiniumBlue · 24/06/2023 09:50

I have that, well, no idea about grams but 4 dessert spoons of yogurt, drizzle of honey, a small spoonful of flaked almonds( a teaspoon which is maybe about 5g?) and some berries. Lovely, and gets me through to lunchtime no problem.
What does your mum think is wrong, bearing in mind you don't normally eat breakfast at all?

cocksstrideintheevening · 24/06/2023 09:50

It's very small. 100g is half a small pot isn't it?

I eat full fat Greek yogurt every morning. Perfectly healthy. Don't add anything to it.

maddiemookins16mum · 24/06/2023 10:04

I’m not a big breakfast eater, but Fage yoghurt and honey (or maple syrup) is one of my go to breakfasts when I need to eat something.

Or a Twix 🤗

ARareKindaBear · 24/06/2023 10:11

I don’t know why it became 5g … I weigh the 100g of yogurt to make sure the 400g pot lasts me at least 4 days so I just got into the habit of adding the nuts whilst the dish was still on the scales.

My typical day looks like:

breakfast - yogurt and nuts
lunch - tuna sandwich (2 slices of 400g seeded bread)
dinner - chicken curry and rice/lamb chops, new potatoes and veg/steak with sweet potato and veg etc

evening snacks - 6 bourbon biscuits (trying to cut this out but they’re so bloody moreish!)

I don’t eat fruit as I simply don’t like it. I’m not trying to lose or gain weight. My appetite is just generally rubbish

I have something similar most days if I'm at home in the morning. Greek yoghurt with honey, seeds, berries and a topping of granola or muesli. Bloody lovely!

Boredofmyguts · 24/06/2023 11:02

Yogurt - good
nuts - good, but 5g is not enough
honey - only local or Manuka honey is healthy

BaronessBomburst · 24/06/2023 11:02

What nuts are you using?
5g walnuts is 3 halves. That's a garnish!
