To think this is a suitable breakfast?

For years I have not eaten breakfast, I never have appetite in a morning so just drink coffee and wait until lunch to eat.

Recently however I’ve discovered honey Greek yogurt and I’ve become a bit obsessed with it! So I’ve been eating 100g of Greek honey yogurt mixed with 5g of chopped mixed nuts every morning for breakfast. I love it!

My mum has now decided I clearly have an eating disorder as that isn’t a suitable breakfast apparently - I think it’s quite healthy?! No crappy sugars that you would get with cereal, protein, fibre in the nuts? Honey is good for you too surely?

AIBU to think a) it’s healthy and b) it’s better than nothing?!

So I’ve just been on the Asda app and looked at the ingredients in Fage 5% yogurt … there are none 😂 it’s literally just milk and a few bacteria friends!

As opposed to the honey one I’m eating with a massive list on ingredients as well as 13g sugar. The Fage one has 3g.

So I’ll buy that one, bit on the pricey side but I used to pay £3 for Yakult which I don’t buy anymore!

Buy kefir instead of yakult😁asda usually has the cheaper polish one. Love it. I have it every morning

CC4712 · 24/06/2023 13:43

It might be the 42 biscuits a week that your mum is more concerned about! 😮

A shame that Asda didn't have the Fage yoghurt. I really like that one and was going to recomment it.

As a side note, if you dry toast nuts in a fry pan till just starting to colour, they have 10x the flavour and might make breakfast more interesting.

Alami · 24/06/2023 13:45

This sounds very healthy. Just bung on whatever nuts you like without weighing. Intrigued by your comment that you find all fruit bitter etc. maybe you just don’t like food very much, in which case crack on with whatever you do like and that is relatively healthy. Everything you describe is fine. The biscuits less so, but honestly who cares. I often have a bag of crisps or whatever, plus lots more food than you each day, and I’m normal weight.
PS Fruits that most of us “classify” as veg, eg tomatoes, do you like them?

vestedinterests · 24/06/2023 13:45

100 grams of yoghurt is no more than a tablespoon, 5 grams of nuts will be no more than 2 walnuts unless you are getting the quantities wrong

Eeek 42 biscuits does sound a lot! I think I’m addicted to them!

One of my children used to have the same complaints about fruit - tasted weird and gave her a stomach ache and made her mouth feel odd - and she turned out to have oral allergy syndrome. Do you have pollen allergies?

Alami · 24/06/2023 13:50

When I was a teenager, I could eat a whole packet of biscuits in one sitting. op, just have what you want. You know what’s healthy, what isn’t. You crack on. If your weight is normal and you feel well, all is well. If you feel crap, maybe force yourself to eat some stuff you know is good for you. Eg I forced myself to eat rocket, which I didn’t much like since I found it bitter. Miraculously, I now like it. I just had to educate my palate :-)

Alami · 24/06/2023 13:51

Obvs not if you have an allergy or feel ill after eating!

Emotionalsupportviper · 24/06/2023 13:51

It sounds bliddy delicious!

Eat away.

(In the interests of full disclosure, I perhaps should mention that I have breakfasted on a cold steak pie and a bottle of Guinness in the past, so may not be the best person to ask)

Hotchpotch6 · 24/06/2023 13:54

I’m a recent convert to green yoghurt too. I like the Fage 5% with some dry oats, a few cashew, some fruit (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, pear) a sprinkle of goji berries and a tiny drizzle of honey. Yum and I feel better for
it 😀

Quite worried these dietitiana are not aware of difference between fructose, glucose and the fact that hkney has been ahown to be actually good for gut health. I lokked into gut health and honey is assumed good.
Or all the others are wrong.
Can you link these dietitians who know about gut health @IMustDoMoreExercise and say honey is bad?

Sugar alternatives like honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar are still sugars.
You may prefer the taste, and some undergo less processing than table sugar — but they aren’t any healthier.

Sounds fine to me most mornings I only have coffee. Yes it's better than sugary cereal too. As long as you're eating enough the rest of the day it's not an eating disorder.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/06/2023 14:10

On the theme of Greek yoghurt and fruit , here's one of my favourite weekend breakfasts- I think I got it from hairy bikers diet book or similar.

Dry fry a handful of blueberries and raspberries with a teaspoon of cinnamon till it goes to a spicy smelling mush- pile on two crumpets and a large dollop of Greek yoghurt on top of each. It's absolutely delicious!!

I take quite an issue with someone claiming honey is not healthier than sugar. It's anti inflammatory and potentially prebiotic. It's been know for centuries and used in medicine.

It’s my favourite breakfast. In fact it’s my favourite snack.
Try buying just the Greek yoghurt and adding your own honey.
Yummy.

Crikeyalmighty that does sound good.!
I would never have considered dry frying fruit. Cant wait to give that ago

400g is half a loaf.

"lunch - tuna sandwich (2 slices of 400g seeded bread)"

Possibly the OP meant two slices from a 400g loaf (ie from a small loaf). Large loaves are 800g.

BonnieGlasses · 24/06/2023 09:39

I'm with your mum - it is odd that you're having such a small, low nutrient breakfast every single day.

But OP has explained she doesn't have much appetite in the morning? Sounds fine to me, I can only manage something like a yogurt at that hour in the morning too.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/06/2023 14:24

@IsThisReallyPC also makes your kitchen smell amazing all day- it's our Xmas day breakfast too

Yes I have terrible hayfever which affects my throat and mouth more than anything else! It even wakes me up in the night as I feel like a have something crawling around in my mouth! It’s horrendous

Notjustabrunette · 24/06/2023 14:36

I have Greek yogurt, a few blueberries and strawberries with seeds on top every day for breakfast. No eating disorders here.

ARareKindaBear · 24/06/2023 12:31

I can’t think of a single fruit I actually like, they all taste bitter to me and give me stomach ache. I can tolerate banana more than anything else but I’d have to force myself to eat it

I don’t like fruit either so there’s at least two of us! Nothing strange about it - I LOVE veg so I eat tons of those instead 😋

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 24/06/2023 14:52

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 24/06/2023 09:45

That's a tiny breakfast and 5g of nuts is a very small and specific amount of food.

It sounds like something I would eat if I was desperately trying to lose weight or on a diet.

What are the rest of your meals like?

Well,it's a lot lore than no breakfast at all

BanditsOnTheHorizon · 24/06/2023 15:00

Nothing wrong with that at all, sounds lovely and not dissimilar to what I eat
