To think this is a suitable breakfast?

For years I have not eaten breakfast, I never have appetite in a morning so just drink coffee and wait until lunch to eat.

Recently however I’ve discovered honey Greek yogurt and I’ve become a bit obsessed with it! So I’ve been eating 100g of Greek honey yogurt mixed with 5g of chopped mixed nuts every morning for breakfast. I love it!

My mum has now decided I clearly have an eating disorder as that isn’t a suitable breakfast apparently - I think it’s quite healthy?! No crappy sugars that you would get with cereal, protein, fibre in the nuts? Honey is good for you too surely?

AIBU to think a) it’s healthy and b) it’s better than nothing?!

My favourite breakfast at the moment (after a holiday in Greece) is greek yogurt with pears walnuts and a drizzle of honey. Delicious also fills me up nicely

UndercoverCop · 24/06/2023 11:06

I don't know what honey I'm using at the moment, I bought it from the side of a road in Rhodes so probably not manuka and definitely not local to me!
One jar translates as wildflower honey and the other as thyme, but I don't know if that's actually true they do taste different though

burnoutbabe · 24/06/2023 11:13

That's the breakfast I tend to have when we have got up very early for a flight. As I can't face anything much rise at say 4am. Can eat that then probably a bigger meal at airport.

Createausername1970 · 24/06/2023 11:18

That's my breakfast! I did the Fast 800 last year.

I have frozen berries - left to defrost in their own time, with Greek yoghurt, handful of mixed seeds, handful of walnuts and handful of almonds, with a sprinkling of cinnamon and a nice squirt of honey.

I have it around 11.30 and it generally keeps me full till dinner at 6.

Davros · 24/06/2023 11:22

Someone told me recently that if you have honey that is made as locally to you as possible, it has better health properties

SoWhatEh · 24/06/2023 11:22

Maybe it's the precision of 5g of nuts that prompts her eating disorder comment. DS developed an eating disorder during lockdown and he would weigh out microscopic portions of various things. As a parent, it s quite unnerving to watch. He's better now and I never see the scales come out for stuff like that any more.

ILoveCookie · 24/06/2023 11:26

I eat Greek yogurt with nuts and seeds every day for breakfast. It keeps me going for hours and I find it far more filling than porridge. I measure by spoons, rather than weigh, but it’s the same portion each day so the pot of yogurt & nuts lasts the same amount of days each week.

It may help with allergies rather than having better nutrition or similar.

LegendsBeyond · 24/06/2023 11:28

Honey is sugar, so I wouldn’t have it every morning. The rest is ok though.

Favouritefruits · 24/06/2023 11:29

Greek yoghurt and honey is my favourite breakfast but I like some fruits in there too. Don’t listen to your mum that’s a fine breakfast!

Annoyingsongs · 24/06/2023 11:30

A squeeze of orange juice or a little orange blossom water over Greek yoghurt, honey, nuts and some small dark chocolate pieces is a divine treat.

unsync · 24/06/2023 11:36

Full fat Greek yoghurt is an excellent breakfast. It is high protein and will keep you satiated for a long time. Greek not Greek Style though.

BusySittingDown · 24/06/2023 11:37

What do you eat the rest of the day? Are you underweight?

I have 200g of 0% fat Greek yogurt with chocolate protein powder mixed in, with fruit (usually a banana and an apple). That's about 360 cals, which is fine for breakfast. 100g of Greek yogurt isn't a lot but if you don't have a big appetite in the morning is fine. As long as you're eating well the rest of the day.

MagpiePi · 24/06/2023 08:49

You aren’t going to get much in the way of fibre and nutrients from 5g of nuts, and honey is still basically sugar, but there’s nothing wrong with it if you like it!

What does your mum think is a proper breakfast?

Good quality honey, nuts and Greek yogurt are all extremely good for you and can all be eaten daily. It’s a very healthy breakfast choice. OP doesn’t need to get literally everything from every meal - I’m sure she gets plenty of fiber, fruit and vegetables from her later meals. Don’t be negative for the sake of being negative.

Elphame · 24/06/2023 11:38

One of my favourites too but I have some fresh fruit in it and switch out the honey sometimes for powdered jaggery.

I don't weigh it out - just two big tablespoons of organic Greek yoghurt and then whatever fresh fruit I have in the fridge or fruit bowl.

BusySittingDown · 24/06/2023 11:41

Ah, sorry - I didn't see your other post about what you eat in a day. That sounds ok to me. I'd probably add a bit of salad to the tuna sandwich.

Comedycook · 24/06/2023 11:42

Weighing out 5grams of nuts is really quite odd to be honest. I'm going to do that when I'm home to see how much it is. Surely it's literally like one or two nuts. Must be a miniscule amount.

HAF1119 · 24/06/2023 11:43

Ah some people just like to comment

Mine has dry cereal and a cup of milk.. I get comments lol, it's the same food as if the milk was in the cereal but I've had comments that he will end up calcium deficient if he doesn't have the milk in cereal :s

If you get fibre at other points in your diet all is good

Amboseli · 24/06/2023 11:44

I have a mix of Greek yoghurt and kefir yoghurt with fruit nuts and seeds. No honey. Delicious.

littleripper · 24/06/2023 11:45

The breakfast is no problem. I would be concerned if DD was weighing all her food thou and being so precise about it all.

Everydayimhuffling · 24/06/2023 11:48

Your breakfast is fine. Your day as a whole seems pretty low on vegetables (or fruit, but fair enough if you don't like it). I'd at least add a vegetable to lunch.

diddl · 24/06/2023 11:48

I've been having plain Greek yoghurt with fruit for breakfast a lot lately.

Sometimes I have fish fingers.

My husband has porridge almost every day.

I'm taking a wild guess that your Mum wouldn't find that at all odd!

squidgybits · 24/06/2023 11:57

What is her idea of a healthy breakfast?

PumpkinQueen1 · 24/06/2023 11:57

So you didn't ever used to eat breakfast, but now because you eat a breakfast of Greek yoghurt and nuts (which sounds delicious btw!), your mum says she thinks you have an eating disorder?

I'd ignore your mum. Does she have form for giving her unsolicited opinions on you?

willWillSmithsmith · 24/06/2023 11:57

toastofthetown · 24/06/2023 08:52

If you’re enjoying it and not seeing any adverse health effects then it’s probably fine. I’d be concerned about the sugar levels though, if anything.

AIBU to think a) it’s healthy and b) it’s better than nothing?!
I wouldn’t be convinced it’s better than nothing. There’s a lot of evidence coming out about how intermittent fasting is good for you, and giving your gut a rest by reducing the window in which you consume food and caloric drinks provides benefits. As long as you’re not hungry and forcing yourself to excessively snack mid morning due to missing breakfast, skipping breakfast can be a healthy habit.

I’m intermittent fasting (got four minutes to go before I can eat 😁). Lunch and dinner with no snacks in between. It’s teaching me some really good eating habits as I was a huge snacker.
