To think this is a suitable breakfast?

For years I have not eaten breakfast, I never have appetite in a morning so just drink coffee and wait until lunch to eat.

Recently however I’ve discovered honey Greek yogurt and I’ve become a bit obsessed with it! So I’ve been eating 100g of Greek honey yogurt mixed with 5g of chopped mixed nuts every morning for breakfast. I love it!

My mum has now decided I clearly have an eating disorder as that isn’t a suitable breakfast apparently - I think it’s quite healthy?! No crappy sugars that you would get with cereal, protein, fibre in the nuts? Honey is good for you too surely?

AIBU to think a) it’s healthy and b) it’s better than nothing?!

Well it’s not the full English and is too sweet for my taste, but if you’ve gone from no breakfast to this breakfast, how can your mum possibly think you have an eating disorder?

I'm with your mum - it is odd that you're having such a small, low nutrient breakfast every single day.

This. And who weighs out 5g of nuts???

mastertomsmum · 25/06/2023 09:40

I don’t like cereal and our DS is the same. He eats fruit and then a small piece of toast, proper bakers bread not sliced as we don’t buy it. I have a yogurt fruit breakfast followed by a small piece of toast about 3 times a week. One day I go mad and have a bit of peanut butter on toast and on other days I have a banana or a satsuma/easy peeler.

Re quantity of yogurt or fruit/seeds: some have said that’s a very small breakfast, for me a small pot of yogurt lasts 3 days, I might add honey. 4 raspberries and 4 blueberries. That’s a normal amount if one isn’t a breakfast person and I’m not.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I’m going to buy some plain Greek yogurt (it will be cheaper anyway!) and I’ll try and add blueberries to it as well as the nuts

@ARareKindaBear

Good move. FAGE Total Full Fat (blue one) is the best for lower carbs & IMO nicer than other brands. (Greek & Greek style are different things).

I add frozen raspberries, toasted almonds & sometimes a splash of cream (if you add that on top of the berries it kind of freezes!)

proper fresh honey is the best if you want to add something like that (I don't)

That's usually lunch or part of dinner though as I don't eat breakfast.

Superdupes · 25/06/2023 10:24

If you wanted to be even healthier OP you could try Kefir, it tends to be quite thick but is a bit more sour so may not be to your taste. Very good for your gut though. I agree that you may be allergic to some fruit, my mum is to kiwi. It's not uncommon.

The other things you could add if you wanted to bulk it up a bit more are sugar free muslei (Lidl do a good cheap one in a blue box) or they do linseed and chia seed toppers (Lidl again in different coloured bags near the breakfast cereals/nuts/crackers).

Ohmylovejune · 25/06/2023 10:29

This is similar to a breakfast I often have
Greek yogurt
Local honey drizzle
Handful of omega seed mix (human not bird!)
Handful of blueberries in winter and raspberries from garden this time of year.

It's a fab breakfast.

I've always has the attitude if someone somewhere in the world eats it for breakfast then it's game on! Amazing what you can get away with using that excuse!

MarkWithaC · 25/06/2023 17:35

I don't get why you weigh out nuts. Why not just give yourself an amount that looks like what you want to eat?

Oldgardener · 25/06/2023 17:42

Sounds ok, bu 5g of nuts isn’t much. 30g a day is what many nutritionists, eg Tim Spector would advocate. To make it healthier, add fruit and lose the honey.

CCSA · 25/06/2023 17:50

Skip the honey and add some frozen berries (anything but strawberries) love it.

Boredofmyguts · 24/06/2023 11:02

Yogurt - good
nuts - good, but 5g is not enough
honey - only local or Manuka honey is healthy

Manuka honey needs to be the proper stuff which is very expensive, there are lots of cheap versions which are actually something else and are a con.

There is not enough actual Manuka produced for it be so commonly sold.

Pinkfluff76 · 25/06/2023 18:18

You should stick with eating no breakfast, it’s really good for especially if you’re not hungry

Aprilx · 25/06/2023 18:21

I don’t think there is anything wrong with the breakfast, but you weighing out the 100g and the 5g is unusual and I could see why somebody close to you might be worried.

EmeraldFox · 25/06/2023 18:53

Weighing it out seems like disordered eating or else an obsessive compulsive tendency. It's easy to estimate a quarter of a tub, a seventh of a 1kg tub would make more sense to weigh. 5g of nuts is tiny, I was weighing out 10g when on the waiting list for treatment.

LovelyIssues · 25/06/2023 19:16

It's a fantastic breakfast OP. Your Mum is weird

MrsMrsLeggo · 25/06/2023 19:31

Honey will do wonders for your allergies, especially if you can get local honey. Yes, it's basically sugar, but it's magical stuff. Honey made from local pollen helps you build up a resistance to the pollen around you. A spoon of that in your yoghurt every morning could be a big help.

Vinomummyinlockdown · 25/06/2023 20:39

Everyone on here bitching about a bit of honey and ignoring the crappy biscuits you eat daily!!!

If you read the thread, I did point out that it might be the 42 biscuits a week she is eating that is the issue!

Vinomummyinlockdown · 25/06/2023 21:00

I know! You’re one of very few though. Rest all worried about a bit of honey

Macinae · 25/06/2023 21:16

I have Greek yogurt, berries and pumpkin seeds when I'm willing to eat breakfast (just not a breakfast person). Sounds fine, it's not like it's a pain au chocolat every morning.

ScribblingPixie · 25/06/2023 21:25

Have you ever had date molasses, OP? Gorgeous in yogurt.

Yourcatisnotsorry · 25/06/2023 21:25

I think 5g of nuts is frankly nuts. I would be suspicious you have issues with food if you are weighing out food in such tiny portions, that’s like 1 nut.

VeraMay · 25/06/2023 21:36

Not my idea of a nice breakfast but if you enjoy it then go ahead. Sounds healthy enough and breakfast is the most important meal of the day.

Girasoli · 25/06/2023 21:40

Yeo Valley is my favourite Greek yoghurt. I have it often in the summer, with a handful of strawberries/raspberry, honey, and a handful of almond flakes on top.

(I don't measure it though, I just fill a cereal bowl)

MrsGrumpyKnickers · 25/06/2023 23:03

I have plain Greek yoghurt and a small ramekin of fruit (frozen cherries and raspberries, defrosted!) every morning. Yum, love it!

DobbleBobble · 25/06/2023 23:38

I don't eat fruit generally either. People think this is really weird especially because I'm vegan but I'm just not interested. I do eat a lot of vegetables (now)
