To think this is a suitable breakfast?

ARareKindaBear · 24/06/2023 08:40

For years I have not eaten breakfast, I never have appetite in a morning so just drink coffee and wait until lunch to eat.

Recently however I’ve discovered honey Greek yogurt and I’ve become a bit obsessed with it! So I’ve been eating 100g of Greek honey yogurt mixed with 5g of chopped mixed nuts every morning for breakfast. I love it!

My mum has now decided I clearly have an eating disorder as that isn’t a suitable breakfast apparently - I think it’s quite healthy?! No crappy sugars that you would get with cereal, protein, fibre in the nuts? Honey is good for you too surely?

AIBU to think a) it’s healthy and b) it’s better than nothing?!

For a cheaper alternative to Fage, Aldi sell authentic Greek yogurt made just from milk.

For nuts, I love Lidl roasted hazelnuts. Made from just hazelnuts and very tasty.
You could also try a few seeds like ground flax seed, chia, pumpkin, sunflower.

VivaLesTartes · 24/06/2023 15:04

I have something similar but currently skipping the honey ( although it's delicious) just because monitoring blood sugar. Also rotate the nuts with seeds, berries or a mixture.

HelterSkelter224 · 24/06/2023 15:05

Sounds lovely but is your mum's concern that you specify 5g nuts rather than a few tablespoons / handful of nuts. 5g nuts is a really tiny amount and you won't get much nutrition. She could be overthinking it but maybe the 5g measurement is what she thought was strange. Other than that it's a really nice option for breakfast.

ThisIsACoolUserName · 24/06/2023 15:07

I love Greek yoghurt for breakfast. If I want to trim up a bit, it's my go to.

Outofthepark · 24/06/2023 15:08

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 24/06/2023 09:23

Why 5g of nuts?

Why not?! FFS what is wrong with women today, let a woman eat her breakfast in peace without comment.

OP enjoy!

Also I just googled it and you are getting a truckload of fibre, protein, good fat with all that so you're healthy as well.

Agapornis · 24/06/2023 15:08

What exactly does your mum think is disordered?
My mum, a competitive undereater, doesn't have breakfast and has a small slice of cake/1 slice of bread for lunch Hmm (except on weekends, when she might have cake and 2 slices). She forever comments if I eat more than her that I need to think about my weight.
Meanwhile, I eat enough protein to have muscles.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/06/2023 15:12

@IsThisReallyPC it really is fab isn't it- and a good way too of using up fruit about to go on the turn- I've done it with strawberries and cherries too .

You wait till anyone says 'what's that lovely smell'

Yes I have terrible hayfever which affects my throat and mouth more than anything else! It even wakes me up in the night as I feel like a have something crawling around in my mouth! It’s horrendous

I'd put money on you having some degree of oral allergy syndrome. Anything cooked is fine, but a lot of raw fruits and vegetables set it off. My DD has never been a breakfast eater and I used to try to at least get to have an apple for breakfast, which, of course, was setting the reaction off.

If it's lightly cooked - a little water and some cinnamon and honey, it should be fine. I'd be curious to hear if you like it better that way.

That said, it might be worth trying to see an allergist as it's all related and having something to ease the allergies would probably be a good thing overall. My DD used to wake up at night with it and we could hear her down the hall trying to scratch her throat with her tongue in her sleep. Grass and tree pollen immunotherapy were life changing.

mondaytosunday · 24/06/2023 15:17

Honey is sugar in another form. It only has trace amount of nutrients but it does have antioxidants. So look at it as a healthier alternative to sugar. The 'eat local' is probably just anecdotal and as for allergies - you'd have to be eating ALOT. But you don't have any other high sugar items (other than the biscuits) so I wouldn't worry about it.
Fruit is nice but if eating vegetables there's no need to feel like you SHOULD - but eat the rainbow is good advice so you want to be eating a good variety of vegetables from dark greens up the rainbow to red and yellow peppers etc. So I'd add a nice salad to your sandwich if you can.
My daughter generally only eats once a day, and much less that the '2000' recommended calories. But her weight is stable and she's not particularly active.
I however eat three times a day and I'm not particularly active either and it shows!

Full fat Greek yoghurt is an excellent breakfast. It is high protein and will keep you satiated for a long time. Greek not Greek Style though.

Ah shite I have just realised I have been buying Asda greek yogurt and it says grewk style!
Is this not greek yogurt?

Can anyone recommend a nice one?

ThatFraggle · 24/06/2023 15:19

I didn't RTFT but saw where you said you don't like fruit.

It's more reasonable to say you haven't found any you like yet. Even things like apples have about ten varieties you can get in shops. I don't like the soft mushy kinds, I don't like the sharp tart ones, but I like the sweet crunchy kind.

The same goes for citrus, there are many varieties.

Maybe go to a market where you can easily get single items.

After several months of experiments it would be odd if you don't like ANY of the 50/60 fruits you've tried.

Do you at least eat vegetables?

tt9 · 24/06/2023 15:21

if you want to bedazzle your yoghurt further, try stirring in a bit of runny honey and dipping in chunks of toasted wholemeal pitta bread.

ZebraDilemma · 24/06/2023 15:27

Floralnomad · 24/06/2023 09:44

I have a yoghurt and an options hot chocolate for breakfast everyday , it’s plenty

‘Plenty’ ? Hardly

‘Fage’ full fat
or @FrogFairy just recommended ‘Aldis own Greek yoghurt’

2bazookas · 24/06/2023 15:29

Your Mum is nuts, but her disorder was not caused by eating nuts.

I take quite an issue with someone claiming honey is not healthier than sugar. It's anti inflammatory and potentially prebiotic. It's been know for centuries and used in medicine.

Yes, that is exactly why I used to have it, but perhaps it the the mass produced honey that isn't great for you, but they should say so if that is the case.

inloveandmarried · 24/06/2023 15:45

Hahaha. Tell her in Greece and Turkey that IS breakfast! They add some honey too.

Just because it's not a British breakfast doesn't make it wrong.

Sewannoying · 24/06/2023 15:47

Well I’ve just eaten a 100g pot of Greek style yoghurt (prompted by this thread) and tbh I thought that it would make a very small breakfast. It was fine as a dessert following my late lunch, but I would be concerned if a family member made it one of their main meals.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/06/2023 15:53

@Cosycover I think M&S 10% Greek yoghurt is nice too- comes in 500g tubs - I have to resist eating more than 1/3 at-a time!! I also like the Fage.

Crikeyalmighty · 24/06/2023 15:55

@ocs30 I have that issue with kiwis and anything with lime juice- most odd

ThinWomansBrain · 24/06/2023 16:02

love fage yoghurt - it is expensive though - Lidl Greek yoghurt is good, & tons cheaper

ScottBakula · 24/06/2023 16:15

It sounds fine to me , I have oats , greek yoghurt, and frozen or fresh fruit everyday for breakfast, like you I don't like eating first thing in the morning so this all gets put in to a Doritos dip type glass jar ( its about a third full ) and taken to work .
Alone with the rest of your meals it seems fine to me , if you could add a bit of salad or more veggis in your main meal so much the better .

For all the yoghurt lovers try this machine , it is very easy to use
Start with a small pot of shop bought greek ( live ) yoghurt at room temp , warm up a ltr ( roughly ) of milk whole semi or skimmed DO NOT let the milk boil .
Mix yoghurt and milk together and pour in machine plug in and leave for 8 hrs .
If like me you like your yoghurt thick it comes with a straining basket , pour your yoghurt into this and allow it to strain ( a few hrs or overnight ) if it has strained a bit to much just add some of the whey back in.
Once you have your first batch made save a few table spoons to become a starter for your next batch , I have been using mine for a few months now and am very happy with it ( I promise I don't work for Lakeland ! )
No additives , no mess, no expensive powders and keeps really well .

I haven't tried making cheese in mine yet.

Off topic a bit but i struggle to understand how some people say i don't like fruit. There are so many different fruits and they all taste really different, i don't like bananas but love say an orange or strawberries, just seems odd to me that anyone can dislike all fruit

Some people just don't. My partner doesn't 🤷‍♀️

I used to think honey was good for me but now all the dieticians who know about gut health say that it is just like eating sugar.

manuka honey is so good for you

Outofthepark · 24/06/2023 16:51

Love manuka honey but it's so expensive!
