Well just that really….I have gay, straight, bi sexual and transsexual friends and absolutely have no problem with that, very much a do what makes you happy person.

Butttt….AIBU to think the world is going a bit mad with all the non-female, cis female and whatever other labels are floating about. I’m a woman and that’s that, you are either biologically a male or biologically a female and I don’t mean that in an insensitive way dress how you like and date who you like but surely we can’t just be inventing different/new sexes and telling straight women they are no longer a woman they are now XYZ?

Everyone is treated as male or female at birth depending on genitalia etc. If it's not clear then somebody will make an informed judgement. If there's no penis then that judgement is likely to be a tick in the girl/female box.

Later down the line, when puberty should be kicking in, some will prove to have been wrongly called at birth. Medical and social science will give us the tools to deal with it.

As a midwife with forty years experience, I have encountered only one baby with ambiguous genitalia.
A chromosome test soon settled the matter, though. He was a male baby.

So that's one baby, in forty years.

Some people are born neither male or female.

Who would those be? Those born with a dsd are still genetically male or female. My other half literally works in this field with neonatal issues including dsd.

You are wrong. Totally wrong. So far from right it's funny.

ItJustFellOutLikeWordVomit · 23/06/2023 14:07

I don’t know anything about intersex, does that mean you are born with no reproductive organs? or is it that what you would expect to see on the outside hasn’t developed properly/as expected?

I personally know of 2 babies now young adults that were born 'intersex' with ambiguous genitalia. After further investigations it was decided one child had more male characteristics and the other child more female. apparently as many as 1 in 1000 babies are born this way but it is (was) such a taboo that was never spoken about.
lady Colin Campbell was born this way too.
So this is probably what the poster means by some people are born neither male or female.

You can determine sex from DNA sequencing, v quick and cheap to do. Doctors should not be ‘guessing’. Now I accept there may be other considerations in these cases such as presentation of external genitalia, but we are talking about v low numbers of people who have chromosomes that are not XX or XY.

Anothernameonthewall · 23/06/2023 14:09

And all those he works with are fighting back to retain biological language. Every single medical report, document, research paper him and any of his colleagues see is now being questioned if they try and push woke language. It's dangerous and incorrect. Women are mothers not birthing people and will be known as such.

Tippingadvice · 23/06/2023 14:11

@jonahjones I think you will find the decision on the babies sex was based on a sample of their DNA and chromosomes.

The facts are the two babies were born and they did have a sex, but it was immediately apparent what that was by observation only. Testing confirmed their sex.

yes true the DNA sequencing is done now to determine sex. unfortunately in previous generations this wasn't the case and the poor babies were just raised in the sex that they thought their genitals most closely resembled. as was the case with lady Colin Campbell being raised as male.

Please use DSD.

Do you remember that old joke, “I have three kids, one of each” (cue laughter). Weird how that joke is obsolete now.

Sistanotcista · 23/06/2023 13:50

Exactly this. Look up Caster Semenya for a real life example.

Caster is biologically male, you are the one that needs to do the “looking up”.

Yes fair point. At least nowadays this should be standard practice in these cases.

Now I accept there may be other considerations in these cases such as presentation of external genitalia, but we are talking about v low numbers of people who have chromosomes that are not XX or XY.

The vast majority of people who don't have XX or XY chromosomes look like perfectly bog standard females and males.
X0 - Turner syndrome - female
XXY - Klinfelter syndrome - male
XXX - Trisomy X - female etc

The important part is the SRY gene which is almost always attached to the Y chromosome - if it's there then the baby will be male. Very, very, very rarely it's on the X chromosome so it can be possible for a baby to be born XX male.

Hormones also play a part - a male baby with XY chromosomes who is completely insensitive to testosterone (CAIS) will look female at birth and will grow up to look female - this is often not even discovered until they hit puberty and don't start their periods. Technically they're chromosomally male, but as they're indistinguishable from any other woman it would be very cruel to call them so - they're XY female.

Caster Semanya has XY chromosomes and a DSD which made her genitals ambiguous at birth but at puberty she was fully sensitive to testosterone and developed as a typical male.

Doctors used to do terrible, irreverable things to some babies with DSDs. Most countries are now far more clued up and parents don't "choose", testing is done, the condition is (almost always) identified and the pathway of development (male/female) is described. Surgery is usually delayed, if it's needed at all.

I was agreeing with Mamabear04, who stated "there are three sexes, female, male and intersex." What do you want me to look up? I'm not following your post - apologies.

FOJN · 23/06/2023 14:23

People with DSD's are not a third sex. Whilst some DSD's may not significantly impact a person's life others cause lifelong health problems and present huge challenges for the person affected.

It's offensive and ignorant for so many people here to have accepted the narrative that DSD's in some way explain trans identities. They do not, the two things are completely unrelated.

Some countries may have decided that their laws should acknowledge cultural phenomena specific to that country and others have changed their laws to be sensitive to how some people perceive themselves.

CHANGING THE LAW DOES NOT CHANGE THE MATERIAL REALITY OF BIOLOGICAL SEX, THERE ARE STILL ONLY TWO SEXES.

ASGIRC · 23/06/2023 14:25

Phos · 23/06/2023 13:57

There are two sexes. It’s a biological category depending on your reproductive organs and is determined by your genes. There are rare cases of intersexuality. The vast vast majority of us are male or female. I absolutely hate the term “assigned fe/male at birth” It’s as if up till that point it could have gone either way, and that it could even change at some point. It’s been determined for months by then and you cannot change your sex.

Gender however, is a different and very difficult concept right now. I’m not really sure how I feel. I mean if someone really wants to live as the opposite gender or doesn’t feel like being either then alright do that, but yeah we’ve ended up with a lot of new labels and potentially a dangerous situation where being “non-cis” is the trendy thing to be among young people.

But its not... Its akin to being gay 30 years ago.
Its incredibly hard for the people who have to live through it.
And Im sure no one is CHOOSING to have a harder life just because its "trendy".
Just like no one chose to be gay..

That is not to say that there arent some confused people, who mighthave body dismorphia and confuse that as being trans. But it isnt cause its trendy...

EllaRaines · 23/06/2023 14:28

When skeletons are dug up they are either male or female no matter what operations they had on their genitals or breasts or facial feminisation or chin implants etc in life or what names they called themselves.

Oh FFS no it's not.
No one gives a crap who you want to shag.

But, sorry no, you can't demand I call Eddie Izzard "a woman". That's on another level.

You can't stick a huge honking 50 year old bloke on the Olympics women's weightlifting team. Just no.

Gay people did not demand anything like that.

Ignoring the terminology, OP, there have been rare occasions when a baby was born with so severe a medical condition and so little in the way of either internal or external sexual development that a judgement had to be made on the 'best' way to raise them. Joe/Joella/Joel Holliday is possibly the best known example as he's written an autobiography about it, and he did indeed have a very tough childhood.
