Why does everyone say she is such a great talent and amazing? What am i missing?

I saw her on the Brits and she looked and sounded like a drunk pub singer to me

Oh MsSparkle- Sorry, I hate Madonna!
I wasn't really thinking of Amy W when I mentioned those things, I like her but in a vague kind of way

MsSparkle · 22/02/2008 22:24

Ok well how about Christina Aguilera, now she is a performer and a true talent all round. She writes her music, co-produces it, sings live and puts everything she has got into her performances and her goal is to please her fans.

Christina had a tough childhood, witnessing violence in her home from her dad towards her mother. She hasn't turned to drink or drugs but let out her pain, regrets and hurt though her music by writing some amazing songs and sending a positive message to her fans by saying that no matter what you go through there is light at the end of the tunnel. She really is a true inspiration.

I do like CA - great voice.

MsHighwater · 22/02/2008 23:54

Christina Aguilera's background is all very interesting, if you are a fan, but it's not what makes her a good performer. I don't mean that it hasn't been part of what drives her because it probably has. I just mean that you can make up your mind whether you like her without knowing any of that.

Likewise, liking Amy Winehouse (or not liking her) is not an endorsement (or a condemnation) of her life choices, nor should it be confused as such.

MAMAZON · 22/02/2008 23:59

i find her songwritting ability is fantastic and i adore her voice. teh fact that it isn't quite perfect is what i liek about it.

her personal life is of no interest to me at all.

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:04

I've seen CA twice live and she was a good gig. I love her Spanish songs. She gives it all and she loves her fans and she believes her fan base is what keeps her going, and I have to say I admire that.

That is part of being a musician, and any who is worth his salt - and I've had the priviledge to know a few - will know and tell you that and revel in and love their fans.

For all people laugh at Celine Dion, she feels the same way. She feels like she'd be nowhere without her fans and my folks just saw her in Vegas after New Year. They said she gave 110% and was one of the best shows they'd seen since visiting Vegas at least yearly since 1964. She is a top lady.

notnowbernard · 23/02/2008 00:06

Celine Dion?

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:06

Don't give a toss about AW's personal problems but ffs I love music and when I pay to see a gig I hope to see some good music. I'm not there to see them vomit and act a fool and I've seen so many gigs I can't even count because my folks are aficianados and my dad an amateur musician so I've been seeing all sorts since before I was born in 1971.

Unfortunately, we've seen gigs like this. We've seen performers too jizzed to stand, much less perform and it's dead disappointing.

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:08

I am majorly queasy, notnow.

YUK!

But apparently, she puts on a great gig and that's why she got such a stonking contract (about £80m) in Vegas.

She packs 'em in and puts on a show.

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:10

I'm not a fan, FWIW, but she's a performer and that's part of being a real musician is.

If not, step back, do like Barry Gibb, and make your mint composing and producing.

You know?

There's plenty in that. Write shit for others.

Hell, Prince has done and I've seen him live, too, and he's a good show.

He's all there, he's all about performing for the crowd and that's part of what makes him a great musician.

Fuck, even Kurt Cobain could hold it better together on stage than AW.

I saw him, too, three times before he died.

MsHighwater · 23/02/2008 00:10

expatinscotland, that's what I was getting at in an earlier post. Amy Winehouse, imo, is a great singer who is capable of making great music. But not when she is trashed, unsurprisingly.

Not buying a good record to send a "message" to her would be silly. Walking out of a concert where she can't deliver the goods would be perfectly justified and might actually deliver said message effectively (Might not, of course, but that's up to AW herself).

notnowbernard · 23/02/2008 00:11

Fair play, Expat

Have seen a fair few myself (dp in the game, as it were)

Just can't imagine CD... keep visualising stills from Titanic...

Would LOVE to check out Las Vegas, though... is it worth it?

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:16

i purchase albums because i like them, Ms High, not because or not because of the performer's personal problems.

but seriously, i chose the university where i went - university of TX at austin - chiefly because of its live music scene, and i play classical guitar and piano myself.

when i pay to see a gig, i want to see some damn music.

i go to escape.

i have my own problems.

i know musicians have theirs, i worked closely with them for years.

but let's get away from that, let's lose ourselves in our music.

but with AW, okay, my chief problem with her is that her voice isn't my cup of tea.

but tbh, she doesn't show up for gigs and often enough when she does she's all wrecked and she doesn't perform a lot of music.

well, that's not why i'm there so i wouldn't go to a gig of hers because of that.

so whatever talent she has, i think if she doesn't get it together she's shooting herself in the foot.

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:17

there is NO way i would pay to see CD, or even for free.

but my dad's an amateur musician, his family are all not amateurs, and he loves music of all sorts.

and they went to see her.

they took us to our first gigs. so many gigs, we can't even remember anymore.

but they know a good gig when they see it, and she apparently gave a good gig.

notnowbernard · 23/02/2008 00:20

If she doesn't "get herself together" she is a doomed girl, I fear

She has fantastic dancers. Have you checked them out?

MsHighwater · 23/02/2008 00:21

Sorry expat. Wasn't meaning to suggest that you do that, just that boycotting her records is something that has been talked about (I think AW's parents suggested it a while back) and your earlier post brought it to mind.

mrsruffallo · 23/02/2008 00:28

The first cONCERT I went to was Frankie Goes To Hollywood- my mum bought me tickets for my 13 th birthday
It was Fantastic- now they played to their audience [mainly gay men in leathers, plus me and my mate]

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:35

No, I don't boycott people for their personal problems.

But when people pay for gigs it sucks when the performer show up for half and hour and acts like shit and then you don't get your money back.

Yeah, poor them and their addiction problems but at the same time believe you me you think twice about buying their stuff and paying to see them again.

So when you start to hear about all those cancelled and shite gigs in the press you do think twice about paying top whack to see them live.

And as I've stated AW's not my cuppa tea but that would apply to any musician I fancied.

expatinscotland · 23/02/2008 00:38

and I've seen lots of folk with heroin probs - Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Mother Love Bone (before they were Pearl Jam), Nirvana, etc.

but they showed up and did their damn gig.

PuppyMonkey · 23/02/2008 07:42

Completely agree with Ms Sparkle, can't see the "Amy Winehouse is a genius thing" at all. And I remember when she first came out three or four years ago and all the critics agreed she was shit then. What happened?

She got a better PR.

kittywise · 23/02/2008 07:54

AW looks like she smells
And I don't like her voice or 'music' ( I use the term lightly)

swiftyknickers · 23/02/2008 07:57

howw anyone can say she hasnt got a good voice is beyond me - she has the most soulful, heart wrenching voice. At least she has character and i would rather boil my head than listen to the likes of katie melua and other boring generic pop shite

she is poorlyand i hope she gets better soon

kittywise · 23/02/2008 09:11

Katie M is also very annoying. Her voice makes me want to poke her

miku · 23/02/2008 09:33

the point is she is young and caught up in a pretty cut-throat world, with personal problems, and a great talent that her record company is determined to push.
the Brits generally was pretty embarrasing, its all about the beer aint it(she said sarcastically)
christina aguilera aint so young is she?

findingstrength · 23/02/2008 09:45

I find it so strange that mners can say everyone knows drugs are addictive so why take them. Loads and loads of people use hard drugs recreationally (even heroin) and never develop an addiction. AW's mum (a pharmacist) said Amy has always had an experimental attitude towards life - always wanted to try things.
