Why does everyone say she is such a great talent and amazing? What am i missing?

I saw her on the Brits and she looked and sounded like a drunk pub singer to me

motherinferior · 22/02/2008 15:20

I agree with toomanydaves.

casbie · 22/02/2008 15:22

Amy Winehouse is has an amazing voice, but it's the production of her album "back to black" which makes this a classic record.

I feel sorry for her, but her music gives me goosebumps and as someone said on iTunes - i could listen to her sing the phonebook and not get bored!!!

I fear that will be her last and only great record - what a waste.

moondog · 22/02/2008 15:23

I think she is interesting although not doing anything other women didn't do in the early 60s (Dusty, Ronettes Supremes, helen Shapiro et al)

Blimey thoguh, that vid with Charlotte church is terrible I cringed at how awful she was.

casbie · 22/02/2008 15:24

And what is it about leona - fab voice but absolutely shit song and production... i could have written a better song!

pavements honestly (won't translate into american either silly pomo co!

motherinferior · 22/02/2008 15:24

Ah, yes, Dusty. Oh goodness yes.

moondog · 22/02/2008 15:26

I'll tell you who was bloody fab in 60s and 70s.
Cilla Black.
No really she was.
Early Burly Chassis was brill too.
I grew up to that.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 15:26

I agree, UnquietDad, I love Amy Macdonald.

Saw her live in Edinburgh and she gave a terrific performance. Also her Hogmanay gig - excellent!

moondog · 22/02/2008 15:28

Amy Macdonald is a bit too folky-finger-in-the-ear-whilst-wearing-a-hairy-sweater-type for me.

casbie · 22/02/2008 15:30

Amy W will be great if she could do the next James Bond Movie - perfect match!

toomanydaves · 22/02/2008 15:32

Yes agree those 60s birds are FANTASTIC but what is great about AW is her ironic urban lyrics combined with that early sound. Genius. You can hear it in Frank as well as in B to B so it's not all Mark Ronson.
Curiosity piqued and now just ordered Amy Macdonald from amazon. And am supposed to be on austerity drive. Grr. And new Goldfrapp album out. Must work harder.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 15:33

I'd rather listen to her than that gutter-voice Amy, moon. At least, too, when you buy tickets for one of her gigs, odds are she's going to show up.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 15:35

Ugggghhhh, DUSTY!

I hate her voice - I'd rather stick bamboo skewers in my ears and pop my head on a grill.

moondog · 22/02/2008 15:36

Best album ever for groovy early birds is The Supremes 'Love child.
Bloody brilliant

toomanydaves · 22/02/2008 15:38

expat you must learn to express yourself more strongly.
actually skewers and grills. That's James Blunt and Norah Jones for me.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 15:40

I'd marinate my own head before chucking it on that grill rather than listen to Katie Melua.

In fact, I'd volunteer to spend eternity in hell with AW albums on infinite replay than listen to Katie Melua.

Or Dusty.

toomanydaves · 22/02/2008 15:41

I would eviscerate myself with a hot poker, eat my own eyes, and THEN stick my head in the oven rather than listen to KM.

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 15:48

At least I know now that if I get moondog for the Christmas gift exchange just to send her Skeletor Cliff Richards and Tom Jones CDs. Or just skip it all and go for the Golden Oldies section in HMV .

Minkus · 22/02/2008 15:59

I am intrigued by Amy Winehouse. She just seems such a complete one- off, a real original. The way she sings, moves, talks, the clothes she wears, her hair & big tattoos- she just seems the real deal and I think that although her drug misuse is really really awful for her (and us to witness) she's got a powerful message, intentional or not, for young folk- basically that you can be different from everyone else, you don't have to follow the pack. Wish that there had been more mainstream oddballs like her when I was an impressionable teen in the late 80's early 90's and I might have had the courage not to follow the pack back then, only just getting round to being "me" now at 32 (and no I don't have a beehive or minnie mouse shoes like Ms Winehouse)

Oblomov · 22/02/2008 16:02

agree with epat. Nine million bicycles in beijing ? nine zillion reasons as to why I shouldn't listen to such utter shitE !!!!

Oblomov · 22/02/2008 16:02

sorry eXpat.

VictorianSqualor · 22/02/2008 16:03

I'd never seen the Charlotte and Amy duet.
Much prefer Charlotte as a person but I do love Amy's voice.

moondog · 22/02/2008 16:05

Fuck off Expat.
I am cutting edge baybeee.

moondog · 22/02/2008 16:06

Here it is Vic

Remind me of the years i spent living next door to a pub that attracted pissed karaoke wannabees from miles around.

luciemule · 22/02/2008 16:08

It really annoys me when supposedly talented singers/actors etc are idealised as great when they're obviously coping with drink/drug probs.
I'm not being unfair to the people who have those probs - just saying that the industry shouldn't make them out to be so fab when they're in the public eye and obviously aren't setting good morals.

It's not a good image I want my children to see.
