Why does everyone say she is such a great talent and amazing? What am i missing?

I saw her on the Brits and she looked and sounded like a drunk pub singer to me

I quite like Amy Winehouse though. I don't own any of her records or anything but she's okay. Better than a lot of drivel that's around
Drugs and music have always gone together haven't they?

miku · 22/02/2008 18:24

lol hifi!!!!!y'see only a child would notice the 'I wanna wee' dance!
I think she is a total genius, and unfortunatley often genius comes with demons attached.
but Id also like to know.....who here has NEVER got totally drunk and made a fool of themselves at some point in their lives?????cast ye yer stones???

miku · 22/02/2008 18:35

Spidermama, I am totally with you!good points made(not meant to sound patronising!)
It seems that some people can take drugs, party etc and not be addicted, and some cant.....

ratbunny · 22/02/2008 18:39

havent read the whole topic, but to answer op - I first saw her on jools holland and pmsl. I made dh come and watch as she was so awful - thought she was some local woman who needed a break or something.

couldnt believe it when everyone raved about her. her voice is nothing special imo (and I listen to a LOT of music, so I'm not naiive or anthing..)

peacelily · 22/02/2008 18:50

Must admit I haven't read the whole thread just 1st and last pages but as usual there's some lovely judgmental, sanctimonious, self-righteous, small-minded and donwright nasty commentary going on in true MN style

How lovely to describe someone who's mentally ill and with an addiction as "utterly repellent", what a fair minded example to set to a dc "needs a bath" etc. etc.

I expect she's chosen to have such exceptioanlly low self-esteem and self-worth, must make her life an absolute delight.

I'm not brimmming over with sympathy for her by the way, god knows she's made some misguided decisions I'm just aghast at the out and out prejudicial statements on here.

So much for a bit of empathy...

notnowbernard · 22/02/2008 18:51

Some pretty sad attitudes to addiction and drug addicts on this thread

Hope you never have to experience the sadness and despair it can bring. To ANYONE

peacelily · 22/02/2008 18:52

And anyone who sees fit to pick up on anytypos, grammatical errors spelling etc in my last post can go and stick their heads where the sun don't shine.

MsHighwater · 22/02/2008 18:53

Liking her voice or her songs or not liking them is simply a matter of taste, is it not? I listen to a lot of music too and I like her. There are some great singers who don't have great voices. There's more to good music than that. (Leona Lewis can't half sing but I wouldn't thank you for any of her records, for instance.)

What I think about Amy Winehouse's life comes from feeling compassion for a troubled person who has whatever drives her to self-destructive behaviour to contend with and has to do it in the unfriendly gaze of the tabloid media and its readership. I feel as sorry for her as I would do for anyone in such a mess who came to my attention whether famous or not.

helenhismadwife · 22/02/2008 18:53

she has got a unique voice which people obviously love or hate, but her talent is being overshadowed by her drug abuse, and personal problems if she continues the way she is going a few years down the road she is going to be a forgotten has been

ratbunny · 22/02/2008 19:38

ms highwater - I agree about there being more to music than a voice. But loads of people rave about her, mostly going on about her voice, and I just dont get it! Her songs are ok - I happily sing along to them on the radio (But then, I sang along to Take That too, lol)- but i dont think she is anything special. But thats just my personal opinion!

MsHighwater · 22/02/2008 20:25

ratbunny, her voice is part of what is distinctive about her. Clearly people either like it or don't. I do but I understand that not everyone does.

I am as perplexed by the adulation that Katy Melue appears to attract as you are about Amy Winehouse. She is someone that I really think can't sing.

MsSparkle · 22/02/2008 21:07

I started this thread because i don't see the fasination with AW. I really don't.

I must however, comment on the posts about depression. I for one can relate to people who suffer from it because i myself do and have done for a long time. It becomes part of your life and it doesn't just go away like a cold. I have had a pretty normal life with no real tragedies and yet along the way have managed to suffer depression. So i must say that just because AW went to stage school etc that doesn't mean she is exempt from depression. People who have fabulous lives with everything they want can still suffer from depression. It's a state of mind and very hard to explain unless you have suffered from it yourself.

Drug addiction is being made too black and white on this thread too. It's just too easy to say you know drugs are wrong so do them. Again it's one of those things only when you have been there or worked with people with drug addictions that you can understand how people get into them in the first place.

I don't get why everyone is so fasinated with AW because she clearly doesn't care about her fans because if she did then she would care about her performances. The music industry just see pound signs and that's all they care about. I also hate the way she is so unprofessional.

she's a good singer but doesn't really float my boat

MsSparkle · 22/02/2008 21:10

don't do drugs that was supposed to be!

expatinscotland · 22/02/2008 21:11

same here, sea.

just not my cuppa tea.

pointydog · 22/02/2008 21:12

She'd got a good voice but I don't really like her songs.

The reason she's such a celeb is because of her drug addiction and that's quite sad.

ingles2 · 22/02/2008 21:22

I think she has a fab voice, but cringed my way through the brits, the tottering, the skirt lifting, the hair flicking. Actually my maternal instinct just wanted to take her home, give her something decent to eat and put her to bed!

MsHighwater · 22/02/2008 21:24

I, too, find her much easier to listen to than to watch.

southeastastra · 22/02/2008 21:30

no no the she was 'famous' before her addition hit the press, i's just an easy thing for them to pounce on.

the british press squashes any individuality it is the judge and jury

and the majority is thick

effinL · 22/02/2008 21:47

I find the cartoon self image thing very intriguing. Is it a form of body dysmorphia do you think? The tattoos, hair, make up, extreme weight loss, cartoonish clothes. She seems to want to disguise herself. Her stage presence is also very self conscious - not something you would expect from a pro. Poor girl - a great talent but she seems so lost.

CHOCOLATEPEANUT · 22/02/2008 21:51

I think she is v talented,writes good songs,unusual voice

but

shes rank and needs putting down and they should stop wheeling her out looking and acting like that.Very poor

mrsruffallo · 22/02/2008 22:06

Agree ms Highwater- there is so much more to a great singer than the voice. It is about charisma, living the song, bringing some excitement or intrigue into their performance

I am not a massive fan of Amy W but I saw her interviewed recently and she seemed really together, talking about how she was trying to embrace her differentness and individyuality. I liked her. So much more interesting than 'professionals' who may have a better voice but don't say anything

Mellieandmin · 22/02/2008 22:07

So, she is a bit like marmite then. You either love her or hate her (music). I don't think anyone can profess to hate the poor girl based as I am guessing nobody on the thread actually knows her?

She is making big, big mistakes, in public, which none of us want our kids to think is 'cool'. Will ask my 12 yo tomorrow her true opinion of AW.

Whilst all of this is happening the love of her life is in jail. His own fault, granted, but not hers, meanwhile she is wrecking her life as is obviously not able to function without him poor girl. We have all loved like that at one time no?

I commented earlier that I did not get the attraction to the women but I sure as hell would not want to walk a mile in her shoes at the moment.

MsSparkle · 22/02/2008 22:14

"charisma, living the song, bringing some excitement or intrigue into their performance"

But she doesn't do any of that. She stands there looking really awkward trying to keep in time with the band which quite often fails to do.

Madonna for instance, not the best voice but a great performer, has charisma, lives the song, brings buckets of excitment and is definatly intrigued in her performances.
