Why does everyone say she is such a great talent and amazing? What am i missing?

I saw her on the Brits and she looked and sounded like a drunk pub singer to me

Terrible, she was terrible at the Brits too, but then why the fuck would anyone running something like that allow people to go on absolutely off their rocker?
I'd tell her to fuck off if it was my show.

moondog · 22/02/2008 16:10

lol Vic.
You remind me of.....me.

VictorianSqualor · 22/02/2008 16:15

Weeeell, it's the only way they are going to start acting properly isn't it?
If people won't allow them to make such idiots of themselves and won't allow them on their shows drunk and off their head or whatever she was then they'll have to buck up their ideas or they won't make any money.
Simple.

Look, sod it, will someone just please make me The Boss? I'll sort it all out.

moondog · 22/02/2008 16:16

I'll be yer sidekick.

lottiejenkins · 22/02/2008 16:18

Luciemule i said something similar and was laughed at,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

MsSparkle · 22/02/2008 16:27

I read Charlotte Church's biography recently (a really good read!) and she mentioned that performance with AW. She said they had to do the take ALOT of times and Charlotte actually put her hand behind Amy's back and grabbed her top to tell her it was her turn to sing!

I tend to agree with VictorianSqualor. Imho, Amy Winehouse is hugely talented and I love her songs (not so keen on her lyrics so I don't sing along as I otherwise might, or play it when dd is around). BTW, one cover does not negate the fact that the majority of her output is self-penned.

People talk about boycotts which is just silly. As with any other product or service, if you don't like it, don't buy it but if you do, then do buy it. If she puts out quality merchandise and it is successful, while the bad stuff (e.g. bad performance while chemically altered) bombs, she should get the message.

Whether she can use that to motivate herself to sort out her life and her addictions is up to her and by no means certain but a boycott is hardly going to do the trick, is it?

Now Amy McDonald I also like though she needs to button her lip, imho. She has publicly slagged off a couple of "reality" type talent show winners in recent months. A lot of people might have some sympathy with her views but for an artist to express them in public is hardly the way to win friends in the industry, is it?

The one I don't "get" is Katy Melua. Hearing her, for me, is like fingernails down a blackboard. Yech!

mylovelymonster · 22/02/2008 17:01

I really don't like her whiny voice or songs - apart from love is a losing game which is fab. Apart from that, I have no time for her at all - flushing her success down the toilet.

Spidermama · 22/02/2008 17:14

It's quite clear that Amy Winehouse has an incredible, unique voice which has a tone and depth and shows emotions way beyond her years.

Like many great singers before her she's tormented and in a fragile state of mental health. I wish her the very best of luck and hope she can grow away from her demons so that she, and we can all enjoy her talent.

Honestly some of you on this thread sound so like my mum with comments about things living in her hair and how she needs a good bath. Just the kind of embarrassing, missing-the-point type comments mums come up with.

She's intriguing, hit or miss performance wise and is obviously not clean of her drug probs despite going back to rehab (no,no,no) but she has people talking. I'd rather watch/ listen to her than Leona ZZZzzz Lewis et al.

My Dp says she looks like she has a really hairy lady garden... does that kill the thread?

Spidermama · 22/02/2008 17:23

God MMJ that's such an ignorant comment I don't know where to start.

Spidermama · 22/02/2008 17:25

Do you think addiction occurs in a vacuum. That healthy happy people willfully chuck it all in a choose a life of addiction?

What on earth could stage school possibly have to do with anything?

I think I may be wasting my time.

mylovelymonster · 22/02/2008 17:30

I think MMj has a point - there are plenty of people out there in pain and going through hell through no fault of their own so why should we give a damn about her?

mylovelymonster · 22/02/2008 17:32

Intriguing?????ofgs.........

Spidermama · 22/02/2008 17:34

Why shouldn't we give a damn about her?

She has come to our attention. Aren't you just discriminating against her because she's famous/went to stage school/can sing ... does that make her torment any less?

You're not obliged to care for her but I would argue she's no less worthy of our sympathy than any other person with major mental health and addiction issues.

jojosmaman · 22/02/2008 17:35

I kind of agree with MMJ, I could have taken drugs, got drunk, partied wildy etc etc when younger but I didnt as I knew it was wrong and I didnt want to become a heroin addict (I grew up watching Grange Hill, just say no) so it slightly peeves me off when people get all "ooh I feel really sorry for such-a-body now they are a waster, its such a shame, I can't believe how messed up they are, lets blame everyone else but them". Ultimately they knew, the same way I did, that drugs and rock and roll, whilst appearing very cool, will ultimately lead to addiction and then chose to continue.

Spidermama · 22/02/2008 17:36

jojo that assumes the concept of 'blame' is in the least bit helpful, which of course it isn't.

jojosmaman · 22/02/2008 17:37

why "ofgs" lovely monster? I am intrigued by the why she lifts up her skirt when singing, the way she dances, intrigued as to how she does her hair and eye make up. It wasn't meant in a high brow way, clearly not by the tone of my comment, but hey...

Why should we? She has her support network/family? Why should we waste time and energy when there are plenty of people not famous, not in the public eye, and closer to home who could use some attention?
I don't discriminate against her, just not FOR her. Don't turn this into a 'not having sympathy for people with mental health or addiction'. She has what she needs and will deal with her life and issues when she's ready. I don't need to give a damn about her. Why should I?

jojosmaman · 22/02/2008 17:43

Spidermama, where am I saying that blame is helpful? All I am saying is that I wished I could have gone out and got wasted when I was a teenager but I didnt as I knew where it would lead and I was scared of becoming a druggie but now I am supposed to feel sorry for those that had a wild youth when I didnt [feeling sorry for myself emoticon]?

mylovelymonster · 22/02/2008 17:47

sorry jojo - it's just I get fed up with all the media attention and supposed outpourings of sympathy. which are totally fake, and all anyone's interested in is watching someone famous f*ing up, and it sells papers, so no, I don't find her intriguing, and I know a few characters who have fabulous sense of self image and do their own thing, so I don't find her unique.

mylovelymonster · 22/02/2008 17:58

I don't mean to sound quite so cross

mrsruffallo · 22/02/2008 18:13

Honestly, that is a silly attitude towards drugs mmj. A LOT of people take them at some point in their lives and stop when their drug taking reaches a natural conclusion.
Most are not smack heads.
I don't know whether Amy is or not. The problem is she is very young and making all her mistakes in public, when most of us are not in the spotlight during our wild years
