To report someone for possible mortgage fraud

Is it fraudulent to not declare an existing mortgage in another country when you apply for one in the UK?

If the mortgage company application asks for such information then to withhold it would be fraud. Why would you export somebody though? 🤷‍♀️

Aprilx · 18/06/2023 12:21

*report

Andanotherone01 · 18/06/2023 12:23

Your post makes no sense. You want to report someone for mortgage fraud but you don’t actually know if they have committed mortgage fraud? How about you mind your own business.

Wheredoistart78 · 18/06/2023 12:23

Would it not be a standard question on a mortgage application?

OP posts:
Reallybadidea · 18/06/2023 12:23

Who would you report them to? The mortgage police? 😂Why does it matter to you what someone may or may not have said on their mortgage application?

Dumpruntime · 18/06/2023 12:24

It’s not necessarily fraudulent. In fact it’s highly likely to be fully legit.

id ask myself why you wished tk behave like this though,

BellaJuno · 18/06/2023 12:26

It could be fraud if they’ve got an undeclared financial commitment which could have an impact the affordability calculation.

VPFT · 18/06/2023 12:28

It affects stamp duty.

DontMakeMeShushYou · 18/06/2023 12:28

They haven't been honest when the mortgage lender has been assessing affordability criteria but the worst that's going to happen is that they won't be able to afford both lots of repayments and will lose one of the properties. In the great scheme of things, it isn't a biggie and definitely not worth reporting.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/06/2023 12:29

Why would you want to meddle?

Wheredoistart78 · 18/06/2023 12:29

@BellaJuno they're not contributing to the mortgage but they should be of course. Affordability is a bit of a grey area because of this I suppose. Thanks for your reply.

It affects stamp duty.

Not if the property is outside the UK and they are honest about their place of residence.

greenacrylicpaint · 18/06/2023 12:29

why would it be fraudulent?

the lenders in each country do some credit checks to determine that the debt can be served or the house be repossessed if not.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 18/06/2023 12:30

Ah, is it an ex-husband and you want him to keep paying your joint mortgage instead of starting over?

sleepyscientist · 18/06/2023 12:31

Why would you want to report them, this stinks of jealousy.

Wheredoistart78 · 18/06/2023 12:32

@Reallybadidea if only there was such a thing as the mortgage police.

OP posts:
Wheredoistart78 · 18/06/2023 12:33

@sleepyscientist not jealousy at all. I'm not sure what has given you that impression.

OP posts:
Underminer · 18/06/2023 12:34

Have a long look at your motivation for reporting.

Wheredoistart78 · 18/06/2023 12:37

@Underminer it didn't take long to be honest

OP posts:
bluelagoon12 · 18/06/2023 12:39

Just leave them alone and focus on your own life

YouveGotAFastCar · 18/06/2023 12:41

We weren't asked about mortgages in other countries when we took ours out here, or when we renewed it. I wasn't when I got my first ever mortgage on my flat, either.

No fraud here, they just don't care about overseas commitments.

Wheredoistart78 · 18/06/2023 12:41

@bluelagoon12 unfortunately, that's not going to be possible. This situation is affecting my whole life.

OP posts:
clpsmum · 18/06/2023 12:41

Mind your own bloody business

I think owning a property in another part of the world affects stamp duty for first time buyers, as far as I can remember.

Still, the OP should keep out of it and just focus on her own life.

WaterBaby9 · 18/06/2023 12:43

Just mind your business? Not like you're impacted or affected? Weird.
