I was 22 having my first and will be 37 having my last. Just wanted to see is 37 a common age for having your last baby. I never dreamt I'd be pregnant at 37 . I always thought that it was a bit old. Now I'm scared that I'm just being selfish and could have a baby with lots of issues.

I was 37. I personally think having a baby at 22 is more selfish as how on earth would you have a degree, a decent career going, bought a property and had a couple of years just being a married couple by that age? All of which I'd done by 35 when I had my first. Oh and they're both sensational kids!

Wow. Judgement much? I know people who had their first DURING uni. Went on to have fabulous careers and more dc.

Yes, it was judgemental.

Also, a happy life to a some people doesn’t mean a degree and a career. We are all different and make different choices.

Theres isn’t a one size fits all rule to life. People can sometimes be quite blinkered.

Bizarre to think it’s selfish to have a child just because someone hasn’t done something that’s important to you.

Cailin66 · 18/06/2023 13:39

My first at 34, my last at 39 nearly 40. I started way too late, I was stupid, but I didn’t realise it at the time, so I was lucky I’d no fertility problems and I had healthy babies.

My view now is women should start early, mid twenties or very early thirties. You’re younger, fitter, healthier. Less prone to pregnancy or fertility issues. Women nowadays are told they can have it all, that’s a lie. I see many sad cases, and I hear delusional young woman talking about storing their eggs. Madness.

weegiemum · 18/06/2023 14:44

29 for my oldest, 31 for the middle one and 32 for the youngest (had 3 under 4 for a few months). Worked well for me!

Did you actually read the OP and see what I was responding to??

  1. I know it isn't that old to be having a second but I feel a bit old this time round? Had first when I was 30

Of course!

Because people who don't have degrees, don't own a house or aren't married aren't fit to be parents. 🙄

Purplepeaches123 · 18/06/2023 15:21

First 27, 34 and last 35.

@TheSnootiestFox christ alive... you are a teacher and responsible for sexual health advice!? I wish all your students the best of luck with your narrow minded judgment.

When I was in primary my mum was one of the older mums. She had me at 26 which is the age I had my first.

Thinking 26 to be an old mum seems hilarious now.

I'd prefer my kids to be in their 30s I think.

Yep. I had my first at 27, I’m 51 now. I was always one if the older mums 🙄

strawberrywhisk · 18/06/2023 15:24

23, 27 and 34

🙄. We barely have a qualification between us. Neither of us went to Uni but we own our own home outright have done since we were in our early 30’s. No one helped us either. A degree won’t help anyone if they have no ambition.

Fifthtimelucky · 18/06/2023 15:31

38 for my second (and last)
36 for my first.

Goldencup · 18/06/2023 15:31

TheSnootiestFox · 18/06/2023 09:08

Nope, absolutely deadly serious! Putting yourself in the position to have kids is no joking matter. And I know life can turn on a dime as it has, but because of the situation I.put myself in before having my babies it's absolutely nothing I can't handle now they're here!

OFGS you are just trading one set of difficulties/ uncertainties for another.
Younger = easier pregnancy/ birth lower chance of SEN lots of energy, but possibly less stability and money
Vs
Older= wiser, richer and more patience but less energy, higher risk of complications and SEN.

Neither is right or wrong although 14 is probably a bit young and 45+ getting on.
37 is fine.

I was 30 FWIW

Mangogogogo · 18/06/2023 15:32

Had my last at 24. Hopefully anyway!!

had my first at 19 while at uni.. so no degree, no bought home, not married. And he’s such a well adjusted teenager that has better morals and social skills than the absolute knobs who write awful stuff about young mums!

op you’re not old at all! We all do things differently and it’s absolutely fine, if you meet someone being judgey about it, they aren’t worth your time and effort

MrsO3 · 18/06/2023 15:35

Had my 1st at 27, 2nd at 28 and 3rd (he will be my last) at 30

Well, not for nearly a decade now but actually they all thought I was pretty fab as I recall! My own personal views were not necessarily represented by the Fraser Guidelines and I was professional enough to do my job.

If that was aimed at me, please could you show me what I wrote about young mums? I was responding to a post where the OP was inferring that older mums were selfish, and everybody seems to have missed that and is having a go at me 🤣 probably because they're being defensive about being a younger parent which is fine if you're set up to do that but very few are! Go and call someone else a knob!

TheSnootiestFox · 18/06/2023 15:54

I find it interesting that we've got posters like the one above trying to rip me to shreds yet if a there was a post asking for help because a 19 year old daughter was pregnant while at Uni, there would be utter horror at the thought of a teenage girl giving up their degree to have an unplanned baby. There is so much hypocrisy in here it's untrue 😅

Your post is offensive to older mothers

The OP is going to be an older mother and is looking for reassurance, that’s all.

Betsybee88 · 18/06/2023 16:00

I had my 1st at 20, last at 31. I wouldn't actively try for one now (I'm 35) but I wouldn't automatically think abortion if I did accidentally fall pregnant. I'd rather not though.
I think with having children younger and then having a gap made me come to that conclusion though. I was a lot more tired with no 3 than I was no.1. I wouldn't say I had more patience, intact I had more stresses in life.
I don't know what the ideal age to have a baby is but I enjoyed the experience I had over all most with no.2 when I was 24.
