To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

1000 replies

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

I was waiting for @PencilsInSpace to come and add some sensible stuff
We were on threads in the days of the clearo and the ego ce4!

PencilsInSpace · 19/06/2023 20:30

Yay, @bonfirebash how's it going?

CE4s were so shite weren't they? 😂You had to keep them the right way up or they'd spill. Still, they were good enough to get me off a 30+ year, 15 a day tobacco habit by accident and I've never looked back.

It's my 10th vapiversary later this year and I just dug out my old spreadshit. I have now not-smoked 53,205 cigarettes Shock

bonfirebash · 19/06/2023 20:33

@PencilsInSpace 7 years smoke free today
Money saved £28,000 (don't ask me where that is!)
Cigarettes not smoked 77,000

Holy crap. I'm still on a mini triton with eleaf Ipower

PencilsInSpace · 19/06/2023 20:34

Wow! Flowers

bonfirebash · 19/06/2023 20:38

I smoked since I was 12, and was on 30 a day when I quit

Tryagainplease · 19/06/2023 20:46

Wow there are some real fucking weirdos on this thread. Why do people get so wound up about other people vaping Confused
For the record, I have never vaped or smoked but I probably wouldn’t even notice someone vaping near me, let alone say something, as I am usually too busy having a life.

Seriously, some of you need to find a personality. What a weird thing to judge someone for.

Why are people real fucking weirdos because they don’t want to breathe in other peoples vile vape?

sarahh96 · 19/06/2023 21:54

How many more times, vape smoke is WATER VAPOUR. You're not breathing anything in! 🙄

It's not your desire to not breathe in vape that's unusual, it's the ridiculous lengths you think strangers should go to that's strange! It's not just strange, it's utterly ludicrous.
What you're describing (people vaping in a neighbouring garden, in the open air) isn't any sort of risk to you. Vapour released in the open air will evaporate very quickly, it's simply not going to be potent enough to travel and get in through a door or window.
It sounds as though you have health anxiety, which is an awful thing to suffer. Have you considered that may be the case?

Not at all - my health anxiety is all good thank you - I am telling you now my neighbours vape in their garden and their clouds of disgustingness travels through to my garden, through my windows when they are open and into my home making my home stink! They obviously don’t want their own home to stink which is why they do it outside. What ridiculous lengths am I expecting them to do - be considerate?? Not such a ridiculous length

bonfirebash · 19/06/2023 23:26

Stink is subjective. Mine smells when I'm vaping, it's biscuit flavour so smells sweet. But if I'm not vaping, there no lingering stuff as it's not like smoke which is why I vape inside

humblemeep · 19/06/2023 23:31

I can't believe some of the messages on here. Vapour travelling through the open air and through windows to make a house stink? I don't think that's possible. All the smell is, is a little food grade flavouring, added to propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin with nicotine. I've walked past people who vape incredibly sweet eliquid (which incidentally I'm also not keen on) and it dissipates in seconds, and certainly doesn't travel that far. Unless they're standing at your window blowing it straight inside.

tiger2691 · 20/06/2023 06:23

All these anti vapers, I note no mention of exhaust fumes, doesn't suit the narrative I suppose. Stand at a set of traffic lights, with queuing traffic, then go get a carbon monoxide level check - free at pharmacies. Your result will be a smokers level reading. Puff your head off using a vape, do the same test, you wont register any CO, at least not from the vaping.

First thing any stop smoking clinic/ doctor will do if you want to quit smoking is take your CO reading, it will be high and the reason it's the first thing they check is because CO is lethal - or at least it's highly toxic.

I was on 60 roll ups a day, that was well over 8 years ago, I never could've quit without vaping, so you naysayers can do one and quit the whining. I'm sure you'll soon move on and be moaning about something else other people do that you dont do, or dont like, or gets you in a rage.

But the post is about vaping and how disgusting it is not exhaust fumes

My god these stink. I cannot bear vaping, why the bloody hell should we have to breathe in your discarded vapour? It's as anti social as it gets imho.

Urrrrrrrggggghhhhh.

This is about the third comment I've read commenting on the smell.

Not one of the people who lecture OP mention the smell, it's about the health risks.

So what is your point?

Bullshit

Noicant · 20/06/2023 06:56

I think theres a heavy dose of moralising here. Going around bothering people with your lectures doesn’t make you morally superior it makes you extremely annoying. Real puritanical streak in some people.

LlynTegid · 20/06/2023 07:06

My view would depend on where your vapes come from. If you are buying from a long established corner shop, I'd hope it was a step towards giving up. If it was from a vape shop, I'd suspect you are supporting money laundering and the decline of your local high street.

No, it isn’t. It is about the OP getting fed up with busy bodies lecturing her on vaping… which you are doing.

Id imagine that WATER vapour travelling from your neighbours garden in to your house is absolute bollocks. But even if it isn’t, it’s about akin to frying something in oil in your own kitchen… I.e. heating a type of oil and cooking something with a strong aroma such as bacon.

I agree with this.
I suspect the people who are being holier than thou have probably fucked their health up in other ways and clinging on to “well at least I am not vaping” makes them feel slightly better about themselves.

What if it's from a long-established corner vape shop? 🙃

Yes, it doesn't behave like smoke. It drops out of the air very quickly, it doesn't linger and drift around.

Sigmama · 20/06/2023 09:00

I hate exhaust fumes too, but vaping isn't great to be near.
