To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

My view would depend on where your vapes come from. If you are buying from a long established corner shop, I'd hope it was a step towards giving up. If it was from a vape shop, I'd suspect you are supporting money laundering and the decline of your local high street.

😂 really? All vape shops are money laundering??

How many more times, vape smoke is WATER VAPOUR. You're not breathing anything in! 🙄

Of course we are or we wouldn’t be able to smell it. Whatever chemicals are needed to make them smell so sickly don’t belong in my lungs.

xogossipgirlxo · 20/06/2023 09:52

As long as you don't blow smoke in my face, I don't care. But they're surely not better than normal cigs, so why people tell you "well done"? It's like an alcoholic switching wine to beer, no difference except taste.

If you read the thread you will see they are
Nicotine isn't the issue, tar and smoke is
They're 95% safer and usually have three ingredients
It's all the crap in cigarettes that causes the issues and also makes it more addictive so no, it's more like a heroin addict going to methadone. Cleaner, safer
If someone is wearing a nicotine patch, they're not smoking and that's the equal I've lent

Bullshit

The post is about vaping - not once does the post mention exhaust fumes

bonfirebash · 20/06/2023 10:03

Posted too soon. I'm down as a non smoker at my dentist, doctor and hospital. All have said well done for quitting

Mybusyday · 20/06/2023 10:09

Tryagainplease · 20/06/2023 08:12

No, it isn’t. It is about the OP getting fed up with busy bodies lecturing her on vaping… which you are doing.

Id imagine that WATER vapour travelling from your neighbours garden in to your house is absolute bollocks. But even if it isn’t, it’s about akin to frying something in oil in your own kitchen… I.e. heating a type of oil and cooking something with a strong aroma such as bacon.

How am I lecturing?? It’s an AIBU - my response is YYABU! Vape travelling from my neighbours garden into my house is not absolute bollocks at all - they vape right by the fence that separates our gardens and my lounge and kitchen is very close to their garden where they vape - and I also can’t hand washing outside as their plumes of disgusting vape go all over my washing and make it stink! I’m vegetarian do I don’t fry bacon but even if I did - the smell of bacon wouldn’t cause myself or others respiratory distress!

@SalviaDivinorum at last someone who talks some sense!! Absolutely my point - I don’t want to be breathing in this awful stuff!

humblemeep · 19/06/2023 23:31

I can't believe some of the messages on here. Vapour travelling through the open air and through windows to make a house stink? I don't think that's possible. All the smell is, is a little food grade flavouring, added to propylene glycol and/or vegetable glycerin with nicotine. I've walked past people who vape incredibly sweet eliquid (which incidentally I'm also not keen on) and it dissipates in seconds, and certainly doesn't travel that far. Unless they're standing at your window blowing it straight inside.

Believe me it absolutely is possible!

Mybusyday · 20/06/2023 10:16

Tryagainplease · 20/06/2023 08:14

I agree with this.
I suspect the people who are being holier than thou have probably fucked their health up in other ways and clinging on to “well at least I am not vaping” makes them feel slightly better about themselves.

There is a difference though in fucking your own health up and having someone else fucking your health up for you because they are too selfish to smoke/vape in their own homes

TidyHomeTidyMind · 20/06/2023 10:21

@Mybusyday they must have industrial strength vapes if your washing stinks and it gets into your home in enough quantity to affect your ability to breathe.
I vaped in secret in my home for years before I admitted* *it to my family, they were all clueless. I sometimes have a sneaky puff at work and guess what? No one notices!!
It just isn't possible that your washing is affected and the inside of your home. I think you need to have a talk with your GP about your anxiety.

Why would I make it up? To prove a point - I don’t think so. You can’t comment on wether it is true or not if you don’t know the situation - I can assure you this is the case! Why were you vaping in secret? I can also assure you that people did notice (unless of course they smoke/vape too) As a non smoker/vaper and someone who has never even tried it I can tell you that you can smell it on people - I have a close friend that vapes and I can smell it on him. I have no anxiety - how does anxiety even enter in to this conversation? I am voting YABU to this post because vaping is gross and disgusting - not because I have anxiety - but I think you already know this and agree with me or otherwise you wouldn’t be vaping in secret…!

Natty13 · 20/06/2023 10:32

This is my formula for absolutely every difficult conversation
Step 1: as you do already: "I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this" (very acceptable to skip step 1 and go straight to 2)

Step 2: "This isn't something I'm willing to discuss"

Step 3: I've told you this isn't something I want to discuss. Stick your opinions up your arse and keep them there.

You’re not getting this.
The OP didn’t ask if she is BU for vaping, she asked if she is BU for being annoyed at people lecturing her for vaping. You said she is BU so you think it’s ok to lecture complete strangers on things that don’t concern you. Which is weird.

Anyone fucking their own health up has a detrimental impact on society - where it’s direct or indirect.

Also - can you prove to me that other people vaping actually affects people’s health? Because that research I’ve seen says otherwise. There is no such thing as ‘second hand vaping’

Herecomestreble1 · 20/06/2023 11:02

I mean, you haven't really given up smoking though have you?

TidyHomeTidyMind · 20/06/2023 11:04

@Mybusyday I absolutely don't agree with you, that is quite clear from my post. I vaped in secret because my children were little at the time and I didn't want them to see it, subsequently as they got older I told them about it.
No one in my family smokes, so thats that theory out of the window.
They just couldn't smell it because it isn't that strong or noticeable!
But yes, of course your home and washing stinks because your neighbours vape outside 😂

BlockbusterVideoCard · 20/06/2023 11:05

We know for a fact that vaping is millions of times healthier than smoking

Millions of times healthier? Er, no. You are deluding yourself. And part of a very big unofficial trial, since the long term (and even short term) effects are only beginning to be understood.

Wereisit · 20/06/2023 11:06

I don't care what you do. Disposable vapes are awful for the environment tho

Tryagainplease · 20/06/2023 13:12

Herecomestreble1 · 20/06/2023 11:02

Yes, she has. She has given up smoking and is now vaping. Vapes don’t produce ‘smoke’ they produce ‘vapour’ (clue is in the name)

Agree as in its not ‘millions’ times healthier. It’s estimated to be 95% healthier though.
And much more preferable to smoking which we KNOW is damaging to your health.
If vaping is stopping people from smoking, that’s a good thing.
I do agree that they shouldn’t be marketed towards children though and should only be used as a smoking cessation tool. I also am not keen on the disposables as they’re so bad for the environment and you can get a perfectly good reusable one fairly cheaply.

No they don't, but they support the same physical actions that many smokers find habitual and therefore I wouldn't say she had quit smoking, she's just quit smoking cigarettes. It's like saying I'm not a gambler anymore because I swapped going to the dog races for online betting.

But she isn’t ‘smoking’ a vape. She is vaping.
And it’s precisely the fact that vaping replaces those physical actions is why it works so well.

If you read the cancer research or the NHS website, they will both tell you that vaping is a good tool to quit smoking. Therefore vaping isn’t the same as smoking.

Schnauzersaremyheros · 20/06/2023 14:41

@Herecomestreble1 would you say the same to someone who was using nicotine patches, gum, lozenges, etc?

Vaping is classed as a form of nicotine replacement therapy (just like patches/gum/lozenges)

OP - congrats on making the step to vaping. And anyone who questions your choice in future, tell them to fuck off and mind their own beeswax!

Vaping is NRT in the same way as an inhalator, chewing gum or lozenges; you must know your betting comparison is nonsense? Though far be it from me to ruin the bizarre nasty wee kick you're obviously getting out of mocking people who vape... 🤨🤪😂
