To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

100% accurate! I said it earlier in the thread - people just hate that they can't moralise at smokers anymore!

I like vaping. I probably won't live long enough to see the side effects of it. I don't need to be questioned on whether i plan on giving up, or told how im addicted to nicotine whilst they guzzle their wine/gin/beer...

Most people who drink alcohol aren’t addicted to it. Most people who smoke or vape are addicted to nicotine - it’s as addictive as heroin or cocaine - and nicotine is not in itself a harmless substance.

Absolutely this!!!

Mybusyday · 18/06/2023 09:53

Tontostitis · 18/06/2023 09:40

If you're vaping you haven't quit smoking

Exactly!

Ilovecleaning · 18/06/2023 04:06

This is exactly the kind of lecturing that the OP is objecting to.

Well it’s lucky I wasn’t put on this earth to pander to people and tell them only what they want to hear, then, isn’t it? 😂

I’d just let them finish and then say, deadpan, something like “well, it was this or crack cocaine and the Trustpilot reviews for my local dealer were shit, so vaping it is.”

I like this response best. Grin

Resilience · 18/06/2023 10:08

Seriously though, I gave up smoking nearly 20 years ago. I smoked about 30 a day at the time. I went cold turkey. No patches or vapes etc. I found it relatively easy TBH but before I was ready, the only thing anyone lecturing me on the evils of smoking achieved was me wanting to have one even more. We'll-meaning, unsolicited advice rarely lands well.

JudgeAnderson · 18/06/2023 10:38

I'm not a fan of vaping but if you're considerate as you clearly are then it's your business and yours alone.

tiger2691 · 18/06/2023 10:43

Emmamoo89 · 17/06/2023 14:32

Vaping is just as bad as smoking

Dont be silly, fags are combusted, e-liquid is heated.

tiger2691 · 18/06/2023 10:45

Tontostitis · 18/06/2023 09:40

If you're vaping you haven't quit smoking

What an idiotic statement, you obviously dont know the difference between something set on fire and something heated.

Well it’s lucky I wasn’t put on this earth to pander to people and tell them only what they want to hear, then, isn’t it? 😂

Yet you're pitifully content to listen only to that which you want to hear...

For obvious reasons, it's not public health practice to introduce preventative products ONLY after they've been tested over decades.

With vaping, there actually HAS been a great deal of research conducted.
[In spite of that, you've referenced the much debunked popcorn lung myth] I'd suggest (given your privileged place on earth as a warrior for truth) that comprehensive, independent research by organisations such as Public Health England and the Royal College of Physicians tends to be more reliable than Quora, Reddit and Sharon on Facebook.

Tontostitis · 18/06/2023 09:40

If you're vaping you haven't quit smoking

Well done for such an insightful statement 🙄

I think you know that vaping is not smoking.

sarahh96 · 18/06/2023 11:18

"Smoke" from vapes is not smoke, it's water vapour. If you are so worried about it being in the vicinity then I suggest you stay at home!

Spendonsend · 18/06/2023 11:30

Well done on quiting smoking. Its really positive to hear a story where vaping has been used in the way its intended.

I do think there are issues with children vaping but i dont think thats anything to do with you. People should moan to manufacturers or the government. Not to a success story.

bonfirebash · 18/06/2023 11:34

Tontostitis · 18/06/2023 09:40

If you're vaping you haven't quit smoking

Yes you have
If you use a nicotine replacement in any way you have quit smoking. NHS, cancer research etc all agree vaping is not smoking because well, it's not
You're inhaling nicotine, not tar or smoke

samsam123 · 18/06/2023 11:46

carry on vaping then, you i know its bad for you will shorten your life but well

SalviaDivinorum · 18/06/2023 12:07

I find the stench from second hand vape fumes to be worse than cigarettes personally.

The disposable ones are horrible for the environment too.

How many ex smokers manage to give up the vape habit as well?

Clearly you were put on earth to insert your nose where it doesn’t belong and to be a
complete pain in the arse. Noble.

How would you feel if other people criticised your habits and choices you’ve made as an adult? Why do you even care?

So people smoking and vaping are the only triggers for your asthma? Okay then Hmm I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but smoking and vaping are never going to be outlawed just because you think they should be. Maybe you should move if your neighbours are causing you such distress.

Hilarious!!! So I should move house because my neighbours are selfish and vape all day long - oh ok then if you say so! 🙄 And yes smoking and vaping are the only triggers for my asthma.

Nat6999 · 18/06/2023 15:44

You have done as much as you can, I agree I don't feel guilty for vaping. Like you, I use a rechargeable mod & tank, only use the lowest nicotine dose & don't vape around anyone else, it's my choice & nothing to do with anyone else.

Theoldgreygoose · 18/06/2023 20:34

Your neighbours are not being selfish - they are doing something perfectly legal on their own property. People like you, who expect others to modify their behaviour just to suit you, are the ones who are selfish. You could move (extreme I know, but it is an option), or you could keep the windows shut - but no, you just want to moan.

Of course they are being selfish!! Their actions could potentially cause someone danger! They do not need to do it outside - why can’t they do it inside their own home? Oh yeah that right because then their own home would stink! Lol seriously? I’m the one being selfish???!!! What am I doing in this scenario that is making me selfish? And yes I do want to moan - I want to moan that when I breathe in someone else’s smoke or vape it makes me physically not able to breathe - who on earth would be ok with someone else’s purposefully making them not be able to breathe??????!!!!!

I have also been telling OP to tell the lecturers to fuck off, but it sounds like there are some people on this thread with a pro-vaping agenda and I think it’s fine to challenge them.

Hello, I have a pro-vaping agenda.

If you want to understand why some of us are fiercely pro-vaping, this video from 2014 by Gerry Stimpson might help:

This is from the days before the tobacco industry got involved.

Vaping was a consumer led disruption to the tobacco industry (loads of people suddenly stopped buying fags), the tobacco control industry (they lost control of the stop smoking narrative), and the pharmaceutical industry (NRT is shite compared with vaping).

Things that have changed since 2014:

We got the EU tobacco products directive which remains part of UK law. Parts are sensible - reliable analysis of ingredients of any eliquid sold in the UK; parts are pointless or counterproductive - max strength and volume of eliquid, max volume of tank, 'leak-proof fill mechanism' ...

The TPD overall has made it much harder for small businesses to compete because complying with stringent regulations is costly. Meanwhile the tobacco companies with ££££ to splurge were able to dominate the market as soon as they saw which way the wind was blowing and turned their attention away from medicinal products to consumer products.

So for a few years the countryside was littered with little 10ml plastic bottles and now is littered with perfectly rechargeable Li-ion batteries stamped with big brand names. That's what the TPD has done.

The other thing that has changed since 2014 is that UK Public Health has thoroughly adopted vaping as tobacco harm reduction. If you manage to access stop smoking services now you should be supported to quit by vaping among all the other methods. There are very few things I feel proud of about this country but this is one.

There are problems with disposables and problems with sales to children and we need to address those but I will stand hard against any measures that throw out the baby with the bathwater.

I have a pro-vaping agenda because vaping prevents a fuckton of tobacco-related health issues and deaths. I am happy to be challenged.
