To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

😂
Sadly I'm just a fat middle-aged woman with a normal office job and a face that obviously makes me look nicer than I actually am, not a secret squirrel highly-paid 'Big Tobacco' lobbyist.

I would never have a go at any adult vaping who has given up smoking. Vaping does not bother me.

What does bother me is the marketing of these vapes. There is a culture right now of kids vaping. Even if you think just telling your DC not to, they do and will find a way.

DS (16) has tried it, he tells me almost everyone he knows is vaping, or has tried it. They’re being sold at schools. It’s rife. You only have to walk past the vaping aisle in Morrisons for example, it’s like a multicoloured sweet shop and you can see how this would appeal to teens, a bit like the WKD drinks for example.

There are vaping shops popping up everywhere too. We have a couple in our high street.

So I think that vapes need to be sold similarly to cigarettes, behind a counter.

I know most of Mumsnet drive cars, but if you ever took a bus you'd see what vapers have done - the top deck is a no go zone for asthmatics, just like in the good old 80s. Don't tell me it's harmless when I need to take my inhaler every time :(

Exactly this! So dangerous for us asthmatics!

It’s madness! Even Boots sell vape now and they are a pharmacy!

You need help for your anxiety

What does anxiety have to do with anything???? I have asthma - other peoples vaping and smoking has put me in hospital before - absolutely nothing to do with anxiety just a matter of life and death!!!!

TheGuv1982 · 18/06/2023 08:33

In the 8 years I’ve vaped, I don’t think a single person has mentioned it aside from a very enthusiastic chap in a smoking shelter who’d clearly turned it into some hobby, and was trying to tell me how he makes his own stuff.

TidyHomeTidyMind · 18/06/2023 08:37

More dangerous than standing at a bus stop while multiple vehicles drive past emitting toxic fumes? Not to mention the bus itself when it pulls up and idols waiting for passengers to get on.....same when you reach your destination, you step off the bus and into vehicle fumes.
Your asthma has probably already been triggered well before you spot a vaper to blame for it!

Mybusyday · 18/06/2023 08:39

Theoldgreygoose · 18/06/2023 03:01

I agree, you do need help. My exDH has asthma and yet smoked for many years and now vapes - and tells me his asthma is not nearly as bad as it was when he was younger. As for not being able to open the windows or hang out washing - that is simply ridiculous.

I have never ever smoked because it is absolutely disgusting!!! I have asthma and other peoples clouds of grossness makes me ill and puts me in hospital - yes I agree it is totally ridiculous that I can’t open my windows because of other peoples selfishness - they obviously vape outside because they don’t want the stench in their own homes - my neighbours vape and not only do I not want their disgusting smell all over my washing and in my home 🤮 but also breathing in that crap triggers a life threatening illness - absolutely fuck all to do with anxiety and the only help I need is a ban on these disgusting things!

I don’t have buses in my back garden - what I do have are selfish neighbours who vape all day long and setting off my asthma!

Propylene glycol causes the popcorn lung. When it heats it up it goes thin. Turns to vapour once it cools in the lungs, it lines the lungs.

Utter bobbins!

'Popcorn Lung' - the turd that has failed to flush since 2015 😂

MeinKraft · 18/06/2023 09:21

There's no way vaping could be anywhere near as bad for you as smoking, well done you on giving up smoking.

Yes there is a problem with the way vaping is marketed and sold but that's a matter for the government not for you. If anything the more middle aged mums are vaping the less likely it is kids will see it as cool Grin

PencilsInSpace · 18/06/2023 09:22

Forgot to say OP, well done for quitting smoking Flowers

immergeradeaus · 18/06/2023 09:24

Was going to say YABU but I agree with you on points 1-3. Vaping is fantastic as a smoking cessation aid, and I’m glad it’s worked so well for you OP.

I hate the fact that these things are being marketed to kids, and flavoured/packaged in an enticing way, and I hate the waste from disposables but that’s not the OP’s fault.

Congratulations on quitting smoking.

FlopsiesAngrySandwich · 18/06/2023 09:25

You are not being unreasonable.
As an aside, other people's perfume gives me migraines and asthma, but nobody ever suggests they're being antisocial.
Even on this thread, people are repeating what you've actually said.

MayThe4th · 18/06/2023 09:33

I don’t see someone vaping as needing congratulating for giving up smoking. It’s just giving up puffing smoke, but finding an alternative nicotine hit.

It’s a bit like a heroin addict starting on a methadone programme, it’s essentially more controlled drug use.

Before the tobacco industry moved into making money from vapes, people went cold turkey when they gave up smoking. That’s worth congratulation, vaping is just swapping one vile habit for another.

KimberleyClark · 18/06/2023 09:38

I like vaping. I probably won't live long enough to see the side effects of it. I don't need to be questioned on whether i plan on giving up, or told how im addicted to nicotine whilst they guzzle their wine/gin/beer...

Most people who drink alcohol aren’t addicted to it. Most people who smoke or vape are addicted to nicotine - it’s as addictive as heroin or cocaine - and nicotine is not in itself a harmless substance.

Avondale89 · 18/06/2023 09:38

I really fail to see how it’s anyone else’s business, unless it somehow directly affects them negatively. And even then, a lecture isn’t warranted.

I assume these people have no bad habits? They only ever eat a pristine diet, exercise regularly and never drink alcohol? Yeah right. The hypocrisy is rampant.

I don’t vape or smoke, but I do think people should mind their own bloody business. You’re an adult, you can make your own choices.

Tontostitis · 18/06/2023 09:40

If you're vaping you haven't quit smoking

It’s irrelevant that people aren’t addicted to alcohol, it’s still incredibly damaging. Have you seen the news recently regarding how there’s no safe limit of alcohol? It’s just socially accepted. The only drug you’re pressured into taking. If people want to drink to excess, it’s their choice. But they’ve got no place lecturing someone for vaping.

So people smoking and vaping are the only triggers for your asthma? Okay then Hmm I'm sorry to burst your bubble, but smoking and vaping are never going to be outlawed just because you think they should be. Maybe you should move if your neighbours are causing you such distress.

You do understand that it's the 'puffing smoke' bit that kills you and not the nicotine?

I would not hesitate to congratulate a heroin addict who successfully switched to methadone. It's a huge step in turning their life around.

Before the tobacco industry moved into making money from vapes we had about a decade of SME produced vapes as well as a strong DIY culture of people mixing their own liquids and building their own coils. I still roll my own coils for about 2p a time.
