To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

1000 replies

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

It is in quotation marks because everyone keeps asking to see the ‘evidence’ not because I disbelieve it - I very much believe it and know it to be true

Which 'evidence' do you believe in and know be true?

Do you think EVALI is caused by nicotine vaping? Please explain your reasons.

Do you think nicotine causes cancer? Please explain your reasons.

Do you think the formaldehyde study is true? Please explain your reasons.

Do you believe that popcorn lung is a thing that affects vapers? Please explain your reasons.

If you can't explain why you think it's true then you don't know, you are just parroting things you want to believe.

Yabu you've not given up smoking at all and it's awful for your health and those that have to be around you.

RTFT
It isn't smoking
It isn't as bad for people around you
It is like banging your head against a brick wall when people are adamant it is

I've been to the doctor and dentist in the past few weeks and it's gone

"Do you smoke?"
"I use an E cigarette"
"Ok so non smoker, when did you quit?"

TeaAndTattoos · 05/07/2023 00:36

YANBU if you can I would just walk away when they start lets them know that you have no interest in listening to them might make them stop. Well done for giving up it’s not easy I gave up 3 and half years go best thing I ever did I did try a vape but I didn’t like it but use whatever is going to help you quit it’s not easy.

No, she really doesn’t. She sounds like she knows what she is talking about. She has not written one thing that could constitute “bullying” (unlike you who keeps calling people disgusting and has actually had several posts deleted on this thread)

She is also asking you a series of question last so that you can defend your position - which is quite respectful IMO. But because you can’t answer her, your just resort to “you’re a bully”

Pigeon chess is right. Honestly, if you cannot see how poorly you’ve contributed to this thread then I cannot help you.

This entire thread is like banging your head against a wall!
My absolute pet hate is people giving their opinion as though it is fact.
I wouldn’t even mind so much if she had said “In my opinion it is terrible for your health and those around you”
But they don’t, do they?
Theyre so arrogant that they believe their opinion to be absolute truth. It’s Dunning-Kruger again!

TidyHomeTidyMind · 05/07/2023 08:19

It scares me that people like busyday walk among us.
It is one thing to have an opinion but history has shown all too many times how terrible things happen when people believe their opinions to be facts.
The only bully on this thread is you @Mybusyday .

Tryagainplease · 05/07/2023 09:27

On a side note, this may be a ridiculous comparison but bear with me, what would we say are the main differences between vaping and, say, a plug in air freshener??

Ok so I know you don’t walk around with a plug in air freshener in your pocket but aren’t they essentially the same thing?? Heating up an oil based substance that contains flavours or scents and breathing it in??

No - she is demanding that I provide evidence (which I have done before btw) And I didn’t say she was a bully I said that she SOUNDS like a teacher and a bully! And actually RTFT and you will see that I have definitely been bullied on this thread for having a different opinion - only difference is that I haven’t been arsed to report! Oh and you reckon you have contributed well?? Ok then. And I dont need your help thank you

I would never use these either - really not good. So IMO these are just as bad as vaping

Ok so if you went to someone’s house who had these plug in air fresheners, would you demand they switch them off?
What if you went to, I don’t know, a waiting room somewhere and they had one there?
Do you think they should be banned? Only available on prescription?
If you think vaping is as bad as smoking, and plug in air fresheners are as bad as vaping, then it follows that you think plug in air fresheners are as bad as smoking, right?
Is Air Wick responsible for thousands of deaths and there is some huge cover up? Will we “see the data on this soon” too?

Sigmama · 05/07/2023 11:39

I thought all the fancy flavours were attracting more kids to vaping

Different kinds of nasty ingredients! Both are bad for my asthma - I have only came across these plug ins once before and I had an asthma attack afterwards and I told the host why. - Both are unnecessary! Nope I have no data on Air Wick but I’m sure you have all the answers….

I don’t have the answers. That’s why I asked originally.
I am genuinely sorry that you suffer so badly with your asthma, though. That must be rough to deal with. And dya know what? I’m sorry for being so disrespectful to you on this thread. It wasn’t cool of me and I apologise.

Yes, I did take the time to look at the 'evidence' you provided before:

I'm not demanding evidence, I'm seeking clarification.

You said of the 'evidence' @Wenfy posted, 'I very much believe it and know it to be true,' but as discussed upthread, the article she posted cites 28 different studies and makes several claims in the space of just one paragraph that were shown to be false years ago.

I was trying to work out whether you believed everything in the article and knew it to be true, or just certain claims, and why you believed that.

But then, you confirmed pages back that if someone wrote 'Vaping makes your head fall off,' you would agree with them. So I'm not sure what I was expecting really Confused

One important difference is that nicotine vapes don't contain oil.

Before Popcorn Lung😱, the biggest scare story was Lipoid Pneumonia😱, a disease caused by inhaling fats or oils.

https://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com/2013/05/german-cancer-research-center-lies.html

So from that I gather that inhaling oils is not a great idea.

90% of school children vape

According to one 15 y/o and what she told her dad 🙄

The latest reliable data for the UK shows that an estimated 20.5% of 11-17 year olds have ever tried vaping but only 3.7% vape regularly.

Discussed here:

@Tryagainplease Thank you - I really am not one to rant, moan or complain and I am not a troll but I really do feel so strongly about vaping as it really does trigger my asthma in the most horrible way which is really scary for me. For people to tell me that I am being stupid because if this and quite nasty about my health is really hurtful so of course I am going to defend myself. My Mum died of lung cancer when I was very young so obviously I am very anti-smoking and I really do think that vaping poses the same risk and the research that I am seeing and hearing of is proving this - I go off on one because I care and I am an empath and I just want people to realise how harmful vaping can be - I don’t want anybody else to die unnecessarily. Thank you for the apology and I apologise also (to you)

PencilsInSpace · 06/07/2023 22:53

I think a lot of people have forgotten just how bad smoking is.

That's the only conclusion I can come to if people are putting plug-in air fresheners, vaping and smoking into the same harm category.

Smoking is the leading cause of premature, preventable death globally. Tobacco kills up to half of its users, this equates to 8 million deaths a year globally. More than 7 million of those deaths are the result of direct tobacco use while around 1.2 million are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke. Around 80% of the world’s 1.3 billion smokers live in low- and middle-income countries.

https://ash.org.uk/resources/view/facts-at-a-glance

13.3% of the adult population of the UK still smoke. That's about nine million people. Unless they can manage to quit by early middle age they each have a 50% chance of their habit killing them. They will lose on average a decade of life.

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/healthandlifeexpectancies/bulletins/adultsmokinghabitsingreatbritain/2021

The current death rate from smoking in the UK is around 92,000 people each year (ASH, see above).

Are soy based candles as bad?

KimberleyClark · 07/07/2023 14:05

No, both soy and beeswax candles are better than paraffin wax ones.
