To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

I am constantly seeing patients that have reactions like this poor lad had

No, you are not.

🤣🤣🤣 oh because you know everything on the planet? Oh ok then you must be right! 🙄🙄🙄

Catspyjamas17 · 28/06/2023 09:12

Antibiotics are obviously massively beneficial to society. Remind me what the benefits of having vape blown in my face are again?

Exactly - there are absolutely no benefits to vaping!!

Mybusyday · 28/06/2023 15:42

RagingWoke · 28/06/2023 10:26

Does it matter what year it is from? It is still current and in my opinion a really eye opener?
It's one single article, and acknowledged it's rare. Not particularly and eye opener.

Even if reactions like this are rare it is still unsafe to do - those that have scoffed at me for being anxious because of vaping honestly be warned that this is what vaping does!
In one rare case that is not even proven to have been caused by vaping. You can find spurious 'evidence' to support anything you want. I refer you to the flat earners who 'do their own research'.

I am constantly seeing patients that have reactions like this poor lad had
You admit it's rare above but then 'constantly' see patients with the same thing. Which is it? Highly doubt you 'constantly see' it but that's the beauty of an anonymous forum isn't it, you can claim to be a mysterious healthcare professional and hysterically shoot down and insult anyone you want while cherry picking anecdata to suit the narrative.

Anyone can have allergies and it doesn't mean that the cause should be banned or is overall harmful to society. Nuts, citrus, dust, eggs, dairy, latex... it's a long list. And that's if a vape was connected to this 'evidence', which is not definitive.

I'd say the overall attitude to something helping people steer away from a much more harmful habit is pretty disgusting. Would you be as passionate about someone overweight trying to diet and using products with palm oil or known carcinogenic sweeteners?

Why would I lie about my job?? It is hardly a glamorous career! And yes - I do constantly see people who are having negative effects from vaping

Mybusyday · 28/06/2023 15:44

humblemeep · 28/06/2023 11:21

Yes! Thank you for writing what I've been thinking and trying to get across.

I'd say the overall attitude to something helping people steer away from a much more harmful habit is pretty disgusting.
This is exactly it. If there were hundreds of deaths a year from vaping I'd understand the ranting, but the odd illness or even death over however many years now, none of which can be definitely pinned down as vape related .. 🤷‍♀️ I'm just glad I don't smoke, which causes many many deaths. I think they just think we're weak and don't understand addictions - which is odd for a HCP, but 🤷‍♀️

Time will prove this tiny you worry and surely one unnecessary death from vaping is one too many 🧐

Ughh gross - no thank you! 🤮

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 13:58

so all the cool vapers are OK with the epidemic of vaping sweeping through schools?

Exactly - this really is quite worrying!

Mybusyday · 28/06/2023 15:49

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 14:02

According to our school it is a bigger problem than smoking ever was and has a much bigger uptake

It is a huge problem and certainly not helped by vapers claiming that it is 100% safe - it really is not - no wonder vaping is rife in schools when adults are insisting it is ‘fine and not at all dangerous’!

Mybusyday · 28/06/2023 15:52

RagingWoke · 28/06/2023 14:43

So because one school says they think it's a bigger problem that smoking it's an epidemic sweeping the country?

Actual studies, with a sample size larger than 1 have been done and there's not the evidence to back that claim up. Of course some kids will vape, they'll also smoke, do drugs, drink alcohol. Perhaps some are bolder with vaping than they would have been with smoking because they think it's more discrete and they'll 'get away with it'.

Whatever the cause for your specific school, it's not representative of an entire country and being condescending and judgemental to people trying to make improvements to their life and health is pretty low.

It’s not just ‘one’ school - it is widespread across the country and not just secondary schools but primary schools too

OneTC · 28/06/2023 15:53

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 13:58

so all the cool vapers are OK with the epidemic of vaping sweeping through schools?

I think most people have said the opposite really.

I'd rather kids were vaping over smoking though, if they were definitely going to do one.

But no, as with most other of the genuine contributors to the thread, I think that more should be done to keep them out of the hands of kids

Where has anyone said it's 100%?

The only person talking in absolutes is you.

Literally everyone who has bothered to inform themselves has cited PHE and their 95% figure

RagingWoke · 28/06/2023 15:57

Does anyone else remember that doomsday cult that kept saying with 100% certainty the world would end on X date, then when nothing happened they just gave another date? These 'just you wait it's coming' posts feel awfully reminiscent 😂

I've not said it's 100% safe, but it's a lot safer than cigarettes and there is no good evidence that second hand vape clouds are harmful (unless you count looking like an twat wafting around holding your breath when you see someone vaping). But this isn't a conversation so I'll just wait for this vague revelation alluded to, no need to respond.

Catspyjamas17 · 28/06/2023 15:58

It doesn't have to be one or the other. If both were prohibitively expensive and locked up behind the counter, subject to the same controls as cigarettes are, they wouldn't be doing either, or certainly not in such large numbers.

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 15:59

Laughing emoji, always sure sign of a strong argument, whilst neatly side stepping the schools issue.

Catspyjamas17 · 28/06/2023 16:06

DH smoked for years, swapped for vaping years ago. In the last year he has developed a horrible cough and will not see the GP about it. I know sometimes people get a cough, oddly when they give up smoking, but it has been years of vaping now and I'm sure the vape itself has damaged his lungs, on top of the damage done by cigarettes.

Why is somebody wafting away disgusting vape from their faces a twat? The only twats are those putting other peoples health at risk!

Do you even know the reporting system??? Have you ever worked in healthcare?

No, I haven't worked in healthcare for many years and I am not familiar with the current yellow card reporting procedure beyond what it says on gov.uk and the MHRA website.

I'm not a clinician like you, so maybe you could explain it to me. I'd still like to know why you have not reported all these serious adverse reactions you are constantly seeing.

Thanks!

He really should go to the GP. A persistent cough is usually nothing serious but it can be a symptom of lung cancer. Unfortunately, even once someone has stopped smoking, their risk of developing cancer never returns fully to what it would have been if they had never smoked.

The NHS is currently rolling out a programme to offer lung cancer screening to every 'ever smoker' aged 55-74.

Ragingwoke, in the communication from the school it talked in more broader terms about a national crisis including stats, so I'm guessing the school is pretty representative of the problem nationwide. My concern over the health of my kids is far from 'low', you've been pretty 'condescending and judgemental' to posters who disagree with you

There is currently a problem with the sale of disposables to children and the sale of black market, unregulated vapes.

It's easy to think a ban is the answer but we already have laws banning sales to children and banning unregulated black market products. Why would a ban on all disposables, or even all vapes as some would like, work any better?

The problem is the laws are not being enforced. Trading Standards make very, very few prosecutions and the fines for offending businesses are very low. TS have recently asked the government for more support with this issue. While the risks of getting caught are so low, unscupulous businesses will continue selling to children and selling illegal products.
