To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

Sorry @Mybusyday , some of us have a life that doesn't include watching whether our washing gets vaped on🤣
GMB 'feature' that lad/story every six months or so, I believe one poster already mentioned it happened in 2017....
I will wait for all of this 'new' research you keep promising us🙄

Don’t feed the troll 🙃

Massive problem with vaping at my kids school, I hate the vaping/tobacco industry and everything it stands for

Aww really? That's a shame, it's been fun winding them up and watching them go!!

Does it matter what year it is from? It is still current and in my opinion a really eye opener? Even if reactions like this are rare it is still unsafe to do - those that have scoffed at me for being anxious because of vaping honestly be warned that this is what vaping does! I am constantly seeing patients that have reactions like this poor lad had

I'm allergic to penicillin, this vile filth must be banned for the good of humanity

Catspyjamas17 · 28/06/2023 09:12

Antibiotics are obviously massively beneficial to society. Remind me what the benefits of having vape blown in my face are again?

It's one single article, and acknowledged it's rare. Not particularly and eye opener.

Even if reactions like this are rare it is still unsafe to do - those that have scoffed at me for being anxious because of vaping honestly be warned that this is what vaping does!
In one rare case that is not even proven to have been caused by vaping. You can find spurious 'evidence' to support anything you want. I refer you to the flat earners who 'do their own research'.

I am constantly seeing patients that have reactions like this poor lad had
You admit it's rare above but then 'constantly' see patients with the same thing. Which is it? Highly doubt you 'constantly see' it but that's the beauty of an anonymous forum isn't it, you can claim to be a mysterious healthcare professional and hysterically shoot down and insult anyone you want while cherry picking anecdata to suit the narrative.

Anyone can have allergies and it doesn't mean that the cause should be banned or is overall harmful to society. Nuts, citrus, dust, eggs, dairy, latex... it's a long list. And that's if a vape was connected to this 'evidence', which is not definitive.

I'd say the overall attitude to something helping people steer away from a much more harmful habit is pretty disgusting. Would you be as passionate about someone overweight trying to diet and using products with palm oil or known carcinogenic sweeteners?

Stopping people dying from cigs and overburdening the NHS after being long term over contributors has got it's upsides as well tbf.

Hence the current medical advice

Yes! Thank you for writing what I've been thinking and trying to get across.

This is exactly it. If there were hundreds of deaths a year from vaping I'd understand the ranting, but the odd illness or even death over however many years now, none of which can be definitely pinned down as vape related .. 🤷‍♀️ I'm just glad I don't smoke, which causes many many deaths. I think they just think we're weak and don't understand addictions - which is odd for a HCP, but 🤷‍♀️

Except the annual cost of smoking related illnesses is around £2bn and the revenue from tobacco tax is £13bn.

The government would be £11bn poorer if people didn't smoke, which means that wider society potentially experiences more cutbacks.

RagingWoke · 28/06/2023 13:30

@humblemeep I'd take the 'HCP' with a pinch of salt given the responses.

Vaping has more benefits than draw backs (dramatic hand wafting, exaggerated asthmatics aside) and it's a really positive step for smokers! Be proud of yourself for giving up the cigarettes 👏

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 13:58

so all the cool vapers are OK with the epidemic of vaping sweeping through schools?

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 13:58

I mean I imagine it's the same ones as the ones who would have tried cigarettes previously so it's better than that
I started smoking at 12, I definitely would have tried a vape. But if I had been able to try and vape and carried on rather than cigarettes it would have been way better for me than 20 years of smoking

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 14:02

According to our school it is a bigger problem than smoking ever was and has a much bigger uptake

It's already been discussed at length over the past 27 pages. Maybe read back?

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 14:02

So because one school says they think it's a bigger problem that smoking it's an epidemic sweeping the country?

Actual studies, with a sample size larger than 1 have been done and there's not the evidence to back that claim up. Of course some kids will vape, they'll also smoke, do drugs, drink alcohol. Perhaps some are bolder with vaping than they would have been with smoking because they think it's more discrete and they'll 'get away with it'.

Whatever the cause for your specific school, it's not representative of an entire country and being condescending and judgemental to people trying to make improvements to their life and health is pretty low.

Sigmama · 28/06/2023 14:52

Ragingwoke, in the communication from the school it talked in more broader terms about a national crisis including stats, so I'm guessing the school is pretty representative of the problem nationwide. My concern over the health of my kids is far from 'low', you've been pretty 'condescending and judgemental' to posters who disagree with you

Mybusyday · 28/06/2023 15:28

EmpressSoleil · 27/06/2023 16:51

But being fat, physically unfit, eating a less than perfect diet, getting inadequate sleep or drinking too much doesn’t cause harm to other people

None of us live in a vacuum. If you drink too much or you're morbidly obese or whatever, you're far more likely to need NHS resources. Most people try and avoid having to visit a casualty department on a Friday/Saturday night as they know it will be busier. The NHS is close to collapse as it is. So I would argue that yes, actually all those things can cause indirect harm to other people, as long waiting lists etc have resulted in people dying.

Whereas those who have switched to vaping are probably now less likely to need the NHS than when they were smokers.

I’m talking about a direct effect on a passerby/someone else - vaping will cause harm to someone else but you passed somebody in the street who had an inadequate nights sleep wouldnt effect you

Mybusyday · 28/06/2023 15:31

PencilsInSpace · 28/06/2023 00:26

What you say here does not tally with MHRA yellow card reporting data.

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1107701/Nicotine-vaping-in-England-2022-report.pdf
(page 82)

So if you are 'constantly seeing' patients like this lad then why aren't you reporting them?

Do you even know the reporting system??? Have you ever worked in healthcare?

I think that using this incredibly rare case to ‘prove’ that vaping is harmful is like wheeling out examples of people who have died from water intoxication (that’s, drinking too much water for the people who are hard of thinking) as proof that drinking water is bad for you.

Or people that have died from anaphylaxis after eating peanuts as proof that peanuts are bad for you.

The article was proof I think to those who are saying that vaping was 100% safe - erm no!
