To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
2. Children are vaping.
3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

why ditch one habit for another?

we all know smoking is bad yet people still take it up. Stupid people. To get in with the crowd 🙄 and doing it in front of kids like its an ok thing to do.

Horrible habit - exactly this though, just changing one disgusting habit for another! Really worrying that so many teenagers are addicted at such a young age

Well - this thread has been informative in the main. I’m certainly convinced on the positive impact vaping has on people who want to quit smoking and will certainly recommend it to anyone I know who is a smoker (and asks for my opinion, of course)

OP - if you’re still here (I doubt it because of all the spam) well done on quitting smoking. That goes for anyone else reading this who has quit or is trying to, whether you are using vaping or not - you should be proud of the positive choice you have made for your health and I wish you every success.
I cannot pretend to understand what being addicted to smoking is like but I do know from bitter experience that addictions can be devastating for the individual and the people around them - and how hard it must be to deal with other people being so judgemental about your struggles ♥️

My sisters used to talk about me like that too because I didnt want to sit in an increasingly smoke filled living room with one window opened a 5 mm crack as a concession, while they pretty much back to back smoked in ..... order to socialise with them (or be excluded).

They've both given up now, years later.

You don't sound particularly capable of any form of intellectual conversation so your opinions on any subject are entirely irrelevant to me.

Can't you at least, as an alleged HCP, be happy that we've given up smoking and replaced it with something that is much safer, if not 100% safe? That is safer for others than passive smoking.

Don't bother replying, I know the answer already. I just can't believe how small minded some people are. We get that you don't like it, we get that you think it sets off your asthma (although I disagree), that you think it makes your house stink (again I disagree), but we're not doing it to annoy other people, we're (most of us I imagine) doing it so that we don't smoke.

You've obviously never been addicted to something and I'm glad for you, but addictions are exactly that. If it wasn't addictive we'd give up just like that. Sadly the tobacco companies knew what they were doing, ensuring they had customers for years to come. Now we have an option that isn't as dangerous to our health. Obviously we're making use of that option.

Yes, some of us may have mental health problems, I'll happily hold my hand up and admit to depression and anxiety. I'd rather vape than take ADs that mess with my brain and that also haven't been tested for long and may be shown to have long term effects in the future. Doctors hand them out like sweeties, afaics because it gets their patients off their backs. Looking at family members doctors don't even seem to check how their patients get on with them anymore or review them in any way, just keep handing them out.
