To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

1000 replies

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

Don't like it then move out the way? You don't have to stand next to someone

Mybusyday · 24/06/2023 08:11

TidyHomeTidyMind · 24/06/2023 07:42

@Tryagainplease I don't think mybusyday works.....they don't have time with all of the curtain twitching, washing to be brought in and spamming (I mean posting😉) on mn.
I think clinician might be another word for self appointed life guru!

I wish I didn’t work, but really don’t care what you think

Why should people have to move out the way? So gross!!

Mommyofvikings · 24/06/2023 08:15

Well I manage to. Why would you stand next to someone vaping if you don't like it? I don't vape or smoke however people do and it's nothing to do with me. And for the seconds it may come near me it's not exactly going to kill me is it?

That’s what they said about smoking - are you old enough to know about Roy Castle and what happened to him? I would never intend to stand next to someone vaping (bleugh!) but people are so inconsiderate when vaping and just do it anyway regardless of who is near

It's a vile habit but better than fags. Well done

Gosh your neighbourhood must really stink

Yep, I live in the countryside so at this time of year the prevailing smells can be anything from cut grass to animal manure!
If I go into town it might be the diesel fumes from the local buses and cars.
A whiff of weed now and again doesn't impact my life like vaping doesn't impact yours, apart from setting off your apparently extreme paranoia and health anxiety.
And if you are a clinician I hope you don't go on at your patients like this....they probably leave feeling worse than when they arrived 😆

Mommyofvikings · 24/06/2023 09:46

Surely you have something more up to date than Roy Castle? And surely he wasn't passing someone in the street vaping? He has to have been around a lot of smoke for him to have got lung cancer due to second hand smoke??

I suggest you look at the cancer research website on vaping to lower your anxiety on the topic. Maybe it's not nice but it's not going to kill you.

Oh I’m dim now - ok… why would I lie about my profession? We dont have to sign an oaf to say that we will always be nice to vapers and agree with them outside of work you know

Such a disgusting habit

Don't like it then move out the way? You don't have to stand next to someone

Moving out of the way means getting soaked in the rain (it generally rains 80% of the time here) instead of standing under a bus stop shelter, often with a child, because vapers and smokers do that in the shelter (in spite of the signs saying not to). They also do it on train platforms, again in spite of the signs, where there is nowhere else to move. Even if you move down the platform, the metre or so wide trail of smoke is still getting you as it travels and spreads, that's the nature of smoke/vapour.
And usually wherever you move there is another smoker or vaper. There's noo e at the bus stops to enforce it and train station staff don't enforce it either. So where are we moving out of the way to? And why are we getting rained on while smokers and vapers stay under cover.

There's also nowhere to mine when you're in bars and restaurants and the staff prop open the doors and smokers smoke right outside the doors with all the smoke wafting back in.

TheoTheopolis23 · 24/06/2023 10:02

*nowhere to move

Yeah absolutely this!!!!

Vaping DOES affect my life - it affects my asthma and also the lives of my patients who have respiratory problems. No extreme paranoia and anxiety here - just extreme annoyance when I see people (myself included) struggling to breathe because of disgusting vape.

Yes lots of up to date statistics and research will be published in August. Roy Castle was the first example that popped in to my head regarding passive smoking - the same is happening now regarding vaping and a lot of people will get shocked by it (or perhaps not) I have no anxiety on the topic just great annoyance that another human being would want to purposefully cause harm to another person by vaping

PencilsInSpace · 24/06/2023 11:08

'sign an oaf'

Haha that's brilliant!

OneTC · 24/06/2023 11:11

We dont have to sign an oaf

This makes the whole thread worthwhile

TidyHomeTidyMind · 24/06/2023 11:17

@mybusyday Sign an oaf😆 you are definitely proof that if you give people long enough they will trip themselves up!
Clinician my arse🤣🤣🤣

Tryagainplease · 24/06/2023 11:47

Thank you @Mybusyday ”sign an oaf”
that is the best laugh I have had in ages. That’s really brightened my day 😂😂😂

I didn’t know clinicians had to sign an ‘oaf’ 😂😂

Mommyofvikings · 24/06/2023 12:04

Sign an oaf

@Mybusyday you sure you're not telling porkies? 😂😂

Mommyofvikings · 24/06/2023 12:07

There's so much wrong with this and I don't have time to go over it. Please seek help for your anxiety regarding vaping. Also, not to be rude, but people don't care about you so they aren't purposefully causing harm to you. They're minding their business and getting on with their lives. Maybe give it a go 😉

Have a goodun 🫡

TidyHomeTidyMind · 24/06/2023 12:26

Where has @mybusyday gone🤔 I really need a detailed explanation as to how one signs an oaf....it sounds tricky!

Mybusyday · 24/06/2023 13:02

Clearly subtle sarcasm is lost on all those having a go at me - and I’m the one that is called dim….! 🤣🤣🤣

Lol.

Passive aggression and gas lighting at its best.
