To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
2. Children are vaping.
3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

I think you need to look up the word hypocrite. I am allowed to have my own opinion and I shall ‘decry’ all I like - and yes vaping is very vile and stinky!

And are you ‘proud’ of causing innocent other people respiratory distress? Nothing to be proud of at all. It might be your business his often you vape but it is also other peoples business when they are breathing in this vile crap.

It’s a good point. There are far, far more things people could be doing that are destructive to theirs and other people’s health than vaping. And I’m talking about ex smokers, not vaping hide clouds and not doing so directly in people’s faces.

I will say again - I don’t vape - but I honestly cannot recall ever coming across anyone vaping massive clouds right in other people’s faces. Most vapers I now end up standing in the smoking shelter with other smokers (which is a shame for them, actually - not sure how that effects their ability to stay off cigarettes but then I’m no expert)

It's not great. Vaping is one of the most effective tools we have for quitting smoking but the early days can still be tough. Being made to stand next to smokers does not help. Also, of course, vapers are not smokers yet they are being subjected to second hand smoke.

OTOH, vapers can be extremely effective advocates towards those who are still smoking. Over the years I've persuaded quite a few smokers to give vaping a try through chats in the smoking shelter so perhaps the net harm cancels out.

(Of course nobody quits in order to reduce net harm at a societal level, we quit because we care about our own health and the health of our loved ones)

I have the most crippling urge to go outside and blow vape clouds at my neighbours washing......although they smoke weed so it probably won't finish them off!
