To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

@Mybusyday you are hilarious! I can't decide if you are a teenager that hasn't left his room for months and this is the perfect entertainment for you or you are a completely neurotic middle aged curtain twitcher waiting for her neighbours to vape outside so she can run to get her washing in huffing as dramatically as possible at the time 🤣🤣🤣

crazyaboutcats · 22/06/2023 16:10

If you want to vape vape and I agree people should not hassle you

But you have not "given up smoking" and your addiction to nicotine has likely increased not reduced as most vapers intake far more then when they smoked cigarettes, rather then reduced.

Just had a bit google and read up on site like .GOV and Cancer research. Whilst i was surprised to read hardly any concrete evidence linked to it being harmful, every single one, without fail had a caveat linked to their reports.

Whilst at present we do not see any links to vaping and cancer or other medical conditions, further investigation is required to rule this out. In whatever way they wish to word it.

Also, every single one said that for someone who smokes it is beneficial for the person to change to vaping but NO ONE who doesnt smoke should consider vaping. Basically it like saying to a heroin user, methadone is a better alternative but you would be fucking stupid to offer methadone to someone who isnt hooked on heroin type thing.

Make of it what you will but i dont want to smell the vile stuff. I dont want to walk through a plume of the 'vape'. I certainly dont want to have any of it in my lungs through choice, my choice.

@Tessasanderson yes absolutely this! There will be more statistics published soon re the link between vaping and ill health

Absolutely this - you are still a smoker if you vape. Yesterday I had the misfortune to witness somebody both smoking a cigarette and vaping at the same time - disgusting!

Vaping is not smoking so yes, they have quit
It's a nicotine replacement that doesn't involve smoke, the same as a patch or gum or an inhalator plus they don't have the risks of smoking, they are a non smoker
I've literally just got back from my dentist who asked me as usual and marked me as non smoker still

The reason people vape more if because
Cigarettes are like trying to get drunk off vodka, you get the nicotine hit quick
Vaping is like getting drunk off beer / you need more and most people vape little and often

Of course you saw someone smoking and vaping 🙄
I think you must live in the vape capital of the country or you don't have much else to focus on perhaps?

Yeah I just like to make stuff up -ffs! 🙄🙄🙄
I do live in a big city so yeah maybe it’s more prevalent here (unfortunately) believe me I wish I hadn’t seen this vulgarity - disgusting!

StarmanBobby · 22/06/2023 16:40

Vaping is for teens, so people will judge. You do you.

YABU. If you’re going to insist on being antisocial (you’re not considerate, btw) then of course you should expect to be lectured.

Don't like it? Tough.

Who the fuck do you think you are? I don't even vape but fucking hell.

Of course there will always be caveats.

It's not possible to prove anything 'safe'. Researchers look for evidence of harm and either find it or they don't. If they don't find it then the best they can say is 'no evidence of harm'. To prove something is 'not harmful' would be to prove a negative and that's not possible.

And of course we need more research, this is still a fairly new, rapidly evolving technology. But there is loads of research going on all the time and there has been for years now -PHE's latest annual evidence review runs to over 1000 pages. And still, no evidence of harm has been found. PHE are still confident in their 2015 estimate that vaping is at least 95% safer than smoking.

And OF COURSE nobody is suggesting that non-smokers should take up vaping. Why on earth would you think anyone would suggest that? Nobody is claiming that vaping is 100% harmless, just that it's much, much safer than smoking, both for the vaper and those around them. For those of us who spent decades making unsuccessful quit attempts, and relapsing over and over again, they are a life saver - quite literally.

I'm glad you've now done a bit of research. Do you think you might owe your poor father an apology?

You realise living in a big city, you're just breathing all those fumes up into your shnoz?

Maybe you should move somewhere else a bit more organic? No vapers, fumes etc allowed. A desert island, perhaps? I'll give you a tenner towards your fare

Lol I don’t live on a factory forecourt!! Nah it’s ok thanks - save your money for private healthcare because the nhs waiting lists for respiratory diseases are currently huge!

I agree with everything you have said here.
I think vaping should be regulated more so that it’s not as ‘visible and present’ for young people. I absolutely don’t think anyone who has never smoked should take up vaping. I think that NOT vaping is always going to be safer than vaping… but I definitely think that vaping is much safer than smoking, is a great smoking cessation tool and it doesn’t make your washing stink.

So are the NHS waiting lists for MH issues.
I believe Bupa can support with neurosis so perhaps "we" aren't the only ones that require a policy.

A few pages ago I posted some links to the amount of deaths caused by vaping vs air pollution.

There have been 4 suspected vaping related deaths in the past 7 years. No link proven, just suspected vs around 30,000 deaths per year due to air pollution.

As you can imagine, it was ignored as there are posters that don’t like to listen to facts.

Nussbaum · 22/06/2023 17:46

I've never smoked or vaped and others doing so doesn't bother me.
The only thing about vapes that annoy me is that I didn't invent them.
I would be posting this from a Carribbean beach between sips of cocktails if I had.

@SniggleSnarf I'll put a tenner in! Perhaps we could set up a go fund me for a private island where busyday & friends can be neurotic in peace ✌

No, I am not conducting the trials myself as I do not conduct research in my role. The data is huge so you won’t need to search for it - you will definitely hear about it don’t worry
