To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

Dogsitterwoes · 17/06/2023 13:52

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

No, you fuck off with your stinky vape and batteries polluting the environment

A battery in a non disposable vape probably last longer than a sex toy unless rechargeable... which I doubt most are.

I don't even vape but the comments on here 🤣

Don’t worry you won’t upset me 👍Perfume doesn’t make me sneeze - I have asthma not allergies. Vape affects my respiratory system not perfume. I can afford expensive perfume as I don’t waste my money on crap that is slowly killing me….

LOL.
I vape, I'm asthmatic.
It's pretty clear that a NRT isn't "killing" anyone.
Apparently money doesn't by enough class to bypass wealth comparisons on the internet.

Tryagainplease · 22/06/2023 12:45

Can you please provide proof that vapers put other people’s health at risk.
And I don’t mean ‘well it makes me cough’ or whatever, I mean links to some cold, hard evidence that second hand vaping (or, even vaping itself) is killing people?

I’m a clinician, I see many people every week who are suffering from effects from vaping. There are many, many studies being carried out presently that are concluding a link between vaping and the risk to other people

You're welcome @Tryagainplease
I see@CherryCokeFanatic has joined in, or has mybusyday name changed 😆

Hilarious!!! Nope I am not @CherryCokeFanatic Probably hard to believe as you are so stuck on your own views but there are people in the world other than me that think that vaping is indeed DISGUSTING!!!

Mybusyday · 22/06/2023 13:39

PinkButtercups · 22/06/2023 13:05

@Mybusyday no it doesn't and it certainly doesn't make your clean washing smell of it either 🤣.

You're funny.

It absolutely does I can assure you! Such a DISGUSTING habit - absolutely VILE!

Oh well done you!! Is it a medal you want? 🙄 You do realise that there are different types of asthma and asthma affects people in different ways. You might not have any bad effects now from vaping but you will do in time

TidyHomeTidyMind · 22/06/2023 13:50

@Mybusyday you are just pure comedy gold....it's like wind them up and watch them go 😂

What’s so funny? I don’t think peoples bad health - especially as a result of someone else’s actions is something to laugh about

No, I want you to quit waving "asthma" about like it's a sunflower lanyard that gives you special dispensation to whine and lie about perfectly legal activities that others engage in.

The scent from vape comes from food flavourings which evaporates in a vapour and remains in the open air for a matter of seconds, which is not enough to affect clothing.

Indoor unventilated vaping, which im sure you're rarely to never subjected to hangs in the air for 5-10 minutes and, again, is the scent of food flavouring such as cherry, candy floss, whatever.

Regardless of indoor or outdoor, vapour has been tested and confirmed not to attach or linger. Google it.

I absolutely "have an idea" about the effects of vaping. It improves my asthma (chronic) significantly after quitting smoking, that's why it's both suggested and offered on the NHS as a NRT.

In the meantime, image attached from the NHS.

TidyHomeTidyMind · 22/06/2023 14:10

Honestly busyday, you need to relax. Maybe sit outside for a bit and have a vape until you chill out.
Being so worked up isn't healthy for you 😉

So you are the source? 🤣. Yeah there are no sources as there are 'many, many studies'.

And no it doesn't make your clothes stink or you washing like I've already said.

Clinician in what exactly?

First time you’ve mentioned that you are apparently a ‘clinician’ (which I am calling bullshit on) also citing studies that are absolutely nowhere. I don’t even know where to begin telling you how ridiculous you sound.

I don’t think you understand what ‘proof’ means.

Just ignore them. Any medical issues you get will probably be from the smoking anyway if you did that for so long. Just do what makes you happy.

Never! It might not be as bad as smoking but believe me it doesn’t affect you negatively. Wait until the end of August and we shall have this conversation again

I tell people I enjoy it, it's none of their business if I vape, and I'm not interested in their lecture.

Well, I swear a bit more than that. But, you know.

Well you might be ‘quite happy’ vaping but the rest of us who hate it are certainly not happy with it - or the stink that comes with it! If you all stopped smoking and vaping it would be a lot better for everyone’s health - gave you ever thought about that fact????

Looking forward to everyone who is deeply offended by the stink of vaping also being vocal about the sink of

  • Perfumes
  • Cars
  • Lorries
  • Blocked drains
  • Swimming pools
  • Farts

I’m sorry do I need to declare my occupation status before commenting in Mumsnet?? Like I said upthread - wait until the end of August for actual proof - and yes there are plenty of studies so far on the negative effects of vaping

Can you please tell me where this data is going to be published, so that I may keep an eye out for it and buy a hat to eat

Tessasanderson · 22/06/2023 15:32

Just had a bit google and read up on site like .GOV and Cancer research. Whilst i was surprised to read hardly any concrete evidence linked to it being harmful, every single one, without fail had a caveat linked to their reports.

Whilst at present we do not see any links to vaping and cancer or other medical conditions, further investigation is required to rule this out. In whatever way they wish to word it.

Also, every single one said that for someone who smokes it is beneficial for the person to change to vaping but NO ONE who doesnt smoke should consider vaping. Basically it like saying to a heroin user, methadone is a better alternative but you would be fucking stupid to offer methadone to someone who isnt hooked on heroin type thing.

Make of it what you will but i dont want to smell the vile stuff. I dont want to walk through a plume of the 'vape'. I certainly dont want to have any of it in my lungs through choice, my choice.

I won't await the study that says it will affect ME negatively, as inhaling nothing is going to be infinitely more beneficial in the long term than inhaling propellants (found in inhalers) and food flavourings.
Doesn't really require a PhD to work that one out but as a smoking cessation device it is infinitely safer than cigarettes, hence the recommendations as a quitting tool.

The crux of your position is that other people vaping affects YOUR health negatively, and lingers on fabrics and the clothing of those who vape.
Happy to reconvene on that when the studies arrive to support it.
I'll set a reminder for the end of August.
