To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
2. Children are vaping.
3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

If you want to use your analogy, I would say it’s closer to someone swapping online gambling with online gaming. They are both similar in processes - as in, you sit in front of a PC (for example) logon to a site etc. One is gambling, the other isn’t.

Regardless of your opinion on it though it's still not smoking
If I went to the doctors and they say
"Do you smoke"
I say yes
They ask how many
I say an e cig
They would go so you don't smoke then

It's the equivalent of answering yes I drink tea when asking if you drink alcohol
It has to be separated and there's info on it in the workplace best practice, otherwise you end up with people who vape being banished to the smoking area and exposed to second hand smoke etc

Anyone out there really miss the good old days of passive smoking? I love the smell of cigarettes, and when I walk past someone appearing to smoke but realise its vaping I feel a little disappointed! I know I'm probably very alone in that.

Which vape flavours in particular do you not like the smell of?

Why didn’t you want your children to see you vaping?? The smell really is noticeable - you just can’t smell it yourself because you vape! Believe me if people tell you they can’t smell it on you when you vape they are just trying to be nice to spare your feelings - it absolutely stinks!!

Well you can certainly tell by the bile that is being directed to vape users, that some people have (luckily for them) never had to ever battle an addiction before 🤔

Its all grim tbh. Smoking stinks, effects everyone around you, get thrown on the street and kills you. Vaping is just as antisocial and its effects on your body will come out slowly over the next decade. I will have zero sympathy tbh.

Am i the only one who listens to the pathetic reasoning from people saying they vape to give up on cigs as blah blah blah. Its like a heroin addict saying they now do some other drug instead. Wow, go you!!

Oh I completely agree with everything you say!

We ban vaping at the holiday let as the smell of the vapour gets into the fabrics as badly as cigarette smoke does and is as difficult to remove.

I only have a problem with gaping when someone wanders past my window when it's open, I'm on the first floor. Last time it happened it caused a sneezing fit and frankly I'd rather smell car fumes.

@Mybusyday I think you have issues to be honest, no one can smell it on me (hence not noticing I did it for years until I told people)
What is it you think you can smell, they are all different flavours including fruit ones, tobacco flavours, menthol. Are you telling me you could pick them out in a line up over all of the perfume smells, fabric conditioners, scented moisturisers etc?
I don't think so.

I'd just go to roll ups. Vaping's weird but we are all free to do as we please and you can just remind people of that.

My 17yo DD loathes it - she hates walking through clouds of sweet smelling fumes. She is convinced that in 20 years time we will be talking about how harmful vapes are as we do about cigarettes now. I'm with her!

I think a lot of the issue some people have with vaping is a hangover from anti-smoking campaigns that weaponise disgust. E.g.:

Absolute bollocks. Its the social equivalent of taking a shit beside someone. I can smell a person who vapes just as easily as someone who smokes. Trust me, i have lost so many family members to smoking/cancer i fucking hate it. I was the kid who went to school stinking like i smoked 20 a day even though ive never had one in my life. Vape smells all blend into each other and you just end up with a overpowering, fruity mechanical smell which reminds me of someone who has bathed in a bath of haribos.

It's quite fascinating how utterly entrenched some people are in their view that vaping is absolutely going to result in a health crisis at some point (even though vapes have been around for 20 years).
Public Health England and The Royal College of Physicians are top of their game in public health, and both organisations vociferously advocate for vaping as NRT.
Still though, you get goons online who think they know better! Stablemates (utterly akin to, and as tiresome) of the flat earth 5G anti vaxxers.

I disagree, they’re addicted to being morons.

Whilst I agree with them, and I wouldn't congratulate a smoker who's just moved smoking to vaping, YANBU to find it rude that they lecture you. It's your life and your health.
