To tell those who lecture me on vaping to Fuck Off

AIBU. No, let them lecture you
YANBU - Yes, be rude to them

I'm in my 50s and was a long term smoker. I switched to vaping in January. I am considerate and only vape outdoors and move away from other people or into a smoking area. People sometimes
comment, there's a brief convo around my giving up smoking, and 9 out of 10 respond nicely in a 'well done you' kind of way.

The 1 out of 10 though start lecturing me on the evils of vaping. These can be complete strangers, or acquaintances. They go on and on.
Usual themes:

  1. Just as bad for you or worse for you than smoking.
  2. Children are vaping.
  3. Environmental impact of disposables.

I respond politely. I acknowledge there is a concern around all of this, and
1 - I know they aren't exactly good for me but I think they are not as bad as cigarettes, and it's my intension to also stop vaping this year
2 - I agree the manufacturer's should stop targeting non-smokers with the sweet flavours
3 - I agree, I use a rechargeable, but there's probably a lot more all of us could be doing for the environment.

But they do not let it drop. I've literally been lectured at on and on.

YANBU to stop being polite after my initial response and tell them that if I stopped vaping today, I'd be back on the fags tomorrow so mind their own fucking business?

Absolute bollocks. Its the social equivalent of taking a shit beside someone. I can smell a person who vapes just as easily as someone who smokes. Trust me, i have lost so many family members to smoking/cancer i fucking hate it. I was the kid who went to school stinking like i smoked 20 a day even though ive never had one in my life. Vape smells all blend into each other and you just end up with a overpowering, fruity mechanical smell which reminds me of someone who has bathed in a bath of haribos.

Bathing in Haribos or taking a shit next to someone. Which is it? Enquiring minds need to know 😂

I forgot how batshit these threads get.

I’ve really heard it all now. Social equivalent of taking a shit next to someone. Wow.

It's quite fascinating how utterly entrenched some people are in their view that vaping is absolutely going to result in a health crisis at some point (even though vapes have been around for 20 years).
Public Health England and The Royal College of Physicians are top of their game in public health, and both organisations vociferously advocate for vaping as NRT.
Still though, you get goons online who think they know better! Stablemates (utterly akin to, and as tiresome) of the flat earth 5G anti vaxxers.

I completely agree. People genuinely think they know better. They state their opinion as fact and I just switch off, tbh.

Floralnomad · 20/06/2023 17:32

As a life long non smoker with chronic lung disease I would rather people smoked than vaped as it affects me less . I wouldn’t lecture you because what other people care to do with their body is their business , but if you were a friend and said you’d given up smoking I wouldn’t expect you to be vaping either .

PencilsInSpace · 20/06/2023 17:33

I quite like 'fruity mechanical smell' though. Sounds like something John Peel would have played at the wrong speed.

LuvSmallDogs · 20/06/2023 17:37

All the hand wringing over asthmatics - lots of things set off asthmatics. Pollen, dust, dander, perfumes, car exhausts. I'm not going to live my life catering to theoretical asthmatics I might walk past or move next door to lol!

Batshit beyond belief! People get so wound up over something they seemingly know so little about but would be the first ones to defend anything that’s actually classed as a public health crisis.

Thats how i feel if someone is vaping near me. They may as well be taking a shit, at least i wouldnt have to breathe in whatever shite they are putting in their lungs. My Father does it. He has had cancer three times in his life. He does the same, I vape to stop smoking excuse. My mother died of cancer having smoked all her life. I look at my father and just feel anger at him. Even losing the love of his life and it still doesnt occur to him to stop putting shit down his lungs. I hardly see him and my family wont enter his house because of it.

That's some statement from a person with lung disease - you'd rather people avoided the 95% safer option, and instead smoked, so they too get lung disease 😳

Tryagainplease · 20/06/2023 17:39

Between 20 May 2016 (implementation of TRPR) and 9 January 2020, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) had received 84 reports of 245 adverse reactions believed to be associated with nicotine-containing vaping products through its Yellow Card Scheme. A report is not proof that the reaction was caused by a vaping product, just that the reporter suspected it might have been.
In the US, where there is a very different regulatory system for vaping products (including products used to vape cannabis), there was a spate of serious lung diseases and deaths which appeared to peak in late 2019. This outbreak seems to have been caused by people vaping the cannabis derivative tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) oil and vitamin E acetate.
There has been no similar lung disease outbreak in England, although the MHRA has received reports of 4 deaths through the Yellow Card Scheme where vaping was suspected to be implicated (2 before the implementation of TRPR and 2 more recently). However, the connection with nicotine-containing vaping products has not yet been established. There is more information in the January 2020 MHRA drug safety update. There are also 2 published serious cases of respiratory illness that have been linked to vaping

I know the naysayers won’t read what I posted from the government website but, to sum up, there are 4 suspected deaths from the UK from the suspected use of vape products - and even here the links have not been proven.

Compare this to between 28,000 and 36,000 deaths annually in the UK from air pollution.

My advice to you would be to learn more about vaping and then you won’t feel so disgusted. You are getting yourself wound up about something you know absolutely nothing about.

I’d rather they did neither , both are vile and disgusting . In the short term I’d rather look after my own health and other people smoking affects me less .

Taken from the link:

Is passive vaping harmful? There is no good evidence that second-hand vapour from e-cigarettes is harmful. As vaping is still relatively new, we can’t be sure there aren’t any long-term effects to people who breathe in someone else’s vapour. But this is unlikely to be harmful.
Passive vaping is not the same as passive smoking. This is because e-cigarettes do not contain tobacco

Is vaping harmful?

Research so far shows that e-cigarettes are far less harmful than smoking. But they are not risk-free and we don’t yet know their long-term effects.

Yes, I think some really interesting and useful social science research could be done in this area.

Year on year, PHE express concern about the amount of misinformation around vaping and the public health implications. Here's their most recent:

https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/nicotine-vaping-in-england-2022-evidence-update

As well as looking at where the misinformation comes from, and how to correct it, it would be worth working out why it's so popular - why do so many people seem to have such a messianic zeal to spread misinformation about vaping?

Why are we still talking about fucking 'popcorn lung' in 2023?

Why do so many posts here sound like an article from The Onion from about 8 years ago? Here it is again for those who have recently joined and not RTFT:

TidyHomeTidyMind · 20/06/2023 18:16

@Tessasanderson I'm fairly sure I would get a much different response if I took a shit next to someone rather than just puffing on my vape.
Think I have read it all on here now.
People are genuinely batshit, it's amazing what some people can get worked up about. I can only assume they don't have much going on in life🤣

I'm sorry for your loss Flowers

Your father has done a wonderful thing for his health and it's a great pity that you can't or won't see it. Can you not bring yourself to do even the most basic research on the relative harms?

The vast majority of smokers and ex-smokers have/had parents who smoke, as well as other loved ones so most of us will have lost someone to smoking. I lost my dad, mum eventually died of a rare blood cancer but her last few years were blighted with COPD and heart disease, my sister is in her mid 50s and now also has COPD. I would be overjoyed if she switched to vaping.

bobaloo · 20/06/2023 18:22

they don't care about you or the environment -- really they don't want you vaping around them. no one wants to breathe in your cloud when you exhale, even if it's technically not smoke.

Tryagainplease · 20/06/2023 18:58

Why are we still talking about fucking 'popcorn lung' in 2023?

Because it’s catchy. You see it time and again - punchy phrases or slogans stick in people’s minds and they go about parroting them as though they are fact. Very few people have the critical thinking ability to actually question stuff like this. This thread is full of them.

Despite this thread being full of links and evidence that vaping is not as harmful as smoking, I guarantee you that after I have posted this, and the thread gets bumped to the top, some idiot will come along, not read any of the thread, and throw out the same crap that other anti-vapers have on here.

I’m not talking about causing me long term damage I’m talking about my short term discomfort as my lungs are worse when there is any type of smoke about be it vapers , smokers , wood burners , barbecues . Vapers are the worse because they create clouds of smoke .

It's like dry ice

We ban vaping at the holiday let as the smell of the vapour gets into the fabrics as badly as cigarette smoke does and is as difficult to remove.

It really does doesn’t it - horrible!

Mybusyday · 20/06/2023 21:56

TidyHomeTidyMind · 20/06/2023 16:59

@Mybusyday I think you have issues to be honest, no one can smell it on me (hence not noticing I did it for years until I told people)
What is it you think you can smell, they are all different flavours including fruit ones, tobacco flavours, menthol. Are you telling me you could pick them out in a line up over all of the perfume smells, fabric conditioners, scented moisturisers etc?
I don't think so.

I can assure you people CAN smell it on you - they are not likely to tell you that you smell horrible are they? And yeah I can definitely tell a vape smell to that of a fabric conditioner! Hilarious - I have issues??!! Oh ok then! 🤣🤣 Hysterical that on MN whenever someone doesn’t agree with someone else they have issues, anxiety or are deluded! Ridiculous - just admit that you have a disgusting habit rather than blaming someone else for your downfalls!
