Anyone seen the No Hard Feelings trailers? I feel like I’ve been vaulted back to 1993. So so bad.

OP posts:

I saw a trailer of Barbie Girl. It looks great. Different intention, I think. This is obviously a parody. I can’t wait to see it.

BlackFlyChardonnay · 16/06/2023 21:10

I saw the trailer and thought "yikes, what went wrong." She was the golden girl for a while, Oscar winning actress etc.

I doubt I'd be offended by the film if I was coerced in to watching it, but the trailer conjured up memories of all those interchangeable, forgettable teen dramadies from the late 90s. Straight to dvd.

I wonder why her career has dived in this way.

TheresaTree · 16/06/2023 21:18

She has had some difficulties getting roles, for reasons not of her own making. I think she may have taken on this role because there’s nothing much else being offered to her.

drstranger · 16/06/2023 21:22

Why is jl not getting any roles anymore?

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 16/06/2023 21:27

It's the grotesque premise of a 32 year old sexually pursuing 19 year old for money

This is exactly what I thought when I saw the trailer. I'm frankly disgusted by it.

Hollywood has not moved on at all. The fact that they think this is a 'funny' premise is just gross.

TheCyclingGorilla · 16/06/2023 21:33

Yeah, I thought it was very much like the nonsense I used to watch in the 90s. Poor JL. She is better than this.

lljkk · 16/06/2023 21:41

The sense I got from the trailer is that JL's character hasn't much going for her in life which is why she debases herself in this 'job' of 'dating' his brains out.

In contrast, the lad she 'pursues', literally has everything going for him, except parents who believe he's fine the way he is.

So I presume that's why what happens. Not that they end up having a romance but they find commonality in having parents who don't appreciate them for who they are, and that their options in life got shaped correspondingly. He might learn to appreciate fun & letting your hair down not just being a swot. She might learn to believe in herself, have more self-respect, and aspire higher than she ever has so far.

That's the way I might have written the script, anyway.

i haven't seen Pretty Woman, from what I read of that plot, not the plot I think JL's film is.

Blinkingheckythump · 16/06/2023 21:47

Oh god it looks awful

phoenixrosehere · 16/06/2023 21:50

I watched the trailer last month and definitely found some bits cringe funny and then some parts I was like.. ugh really. Doesn’t matter to me who is acting in it but the premise is still ick.

I’ve heard of parents in real life doing such things for their sons (rarely if ever heard such a thing about this when it comes to daughters) and thought it troubling that they would try to urge even force their adult child into something that is quite serious that they are not ready for or even interested in to be considered “normal” in their eyes.

GeraltsBathtub · 16/06/2023 21:51

I’d assumed JL had chosen to take a break as she had a baby last year, rather than not getting stuff. But surely she would have been offered better scripts than this… 🤔

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 16/06/2023 21:52

There was a thread yesterday claiming all film and TV since 2008 is unwatchable (in the op's opinion) due to the universal "woke agenda" supposedly permeating everything. That was obviously nonsense.
JL has been outspoken about the objectification she has suffered over the years and seems like a good egg. Her reasons for appearing in No Hard Feelings are her own but maybe it just shows that the culture wars really are a load of rubbish and the media obsession with "woke" is an utter confection that needs to be dropped now.
There is plenty of entertainment out there for people to watch or not. Hard to get worked up about this. Actors are not politicians.

MissTrip82 · 16/06/2023 21:56

Oooh the trailer’s a bit cringe-worthy. Feels like something from another time.

flimsywhimsy · 16/06/2023 22:27

It does look like a bit of a throwback, but I agree with those who've said that not everything has to be taken so seriously. If you don't think it looks good, don't watch, but many people still enjoy a little mindless entertainment and find humour in things that aren't admirable, ethical, or 'correct'.

We don't have to pick everything apart and explain why it's wrong or bad. Or maybe the act of picking apart is some people's idea of entertainment. (I do it sometimes myself with books, read bad books and then ridicule them for my own enjoyment.)

Why is jl not getting any roles anymore?

She had a good "system" for a long time. She'd go X-Men film, Hunger Games film, David O'Russell film. Then the 2 franchises finished/died, O'Russell stopped making films and she managed 3 disasters in a row. Passengers, Red Sparrow and Mother!

I think I'd have gone off to have a baby too.

Emmamoo89 · 16/06/2023 22:32

dayswithaY · 16/06/2023 19:01

She’s made some terrible films - Red Sparrow was one.

I’m guessing they have run out of ideas, Marvel films have run their course and they can’t find a classic film to remake/ruin.

Red Sparrow was brilliant! She is hot af

Red sparrow. Passengers and mother were all brilliant films!

Charlize43 · 16/06/2023 22:41

I don't understand why people get so upset over films. I'm sure JL has bills to pay.

I remember as a child, an aunt of mine getting near hysterical back in the 80s when Julie Andrews did a topless scene. You'd think the world was about to end!

Myfavouritepenguin · 16/06/2023 22:57

I think it looks amusing.

Absolutely cannot get on board with the outrage. FFS they still make gangster films where there’s a great deal of sympathy for gun-wielding dickheads, but somehow this is unacceptable?!

Films are not real life. Nor are they manuals on how to behave. Nor are they obliged to have in them only wholesome, role-model-type characters. This is obvious.

Piglet89 · 16/06/2023 23:02

It might well be dire, but even in the direness, JL lifts it because she is, frankly, a very good actress with excellent comic timing.

AndIKnewYouMeantIt · 16/06/2023 23:24

Emmamoo89 · 16/06/2023 22:33

Red sparrow. Passengers and mother were all brilliant films!

Red Sparrow has a 45% Rotten Tomatoes rating, Mother! was the lowest-grossing film with Jennifer Lawrence as the lead and just about made back its budget plus marketing, and Passengers has a 30% RT rating with most reviews describing it as "problematic" for obvious reasons. It's not exactly a stellar run, is it?

Fisharejumping · 16/06/2023 23:52

The title itself is horrendous.

SarahsHoneydew · 17/06/2023 19:31

Toottooot · 16/06/2023 19:01

For the love of fuck - it’s a film. Settle doon min.

Absolutely this👆

Greengreengrass231 · 17/06/2023 19:35

Can’t stand her after all that fake tripping at the Oscar’s, attention seeking lark

I thought the same thing - outdated shite that should never have been green lighted
