Anyone seen the No Hard Feelings trailers? I feel like I’ve been vaulted back to 1993. So so bad.

OP posts:

I’m a bit disappointed she’s done a movie like this tbh after some amazing roles previously, not a fan of the concept either. I’ll probably watch it though if on Netflix or prime for a mindless Sunday night watch..

Your comment is irrelevant to the discussion about a lighthearted comedy.
In this trailer, the main protagonist is a character who clearly we're supposed to like, not fear. The humour is supposed to arise from the disparity between the paid harrasser and the young non-consenting individual. The humour glosses over the underlying gross premise of paying someone to pursue someone much younger sexually.

It's a fictional story, made into a film. Different people find different things funny. My comment related to the fact that you seemed unable to understand that, your follow up post just reinforced the fact that you don't seem to understand the concept of fiction.

So you will moan about the concept, but watch anyway 😅

QuintanaRoo · 16/06/2023 19:33

Apparently it’s based on a true story.

Yeah and?

Your response shows that you are missing the point completely.

It's not a discussion about the concept of fiction or variation in people's sense of humour.
Take a look at programmes like "It was alright in the 70s" and you'll see how objections like those raised here changed the culture of popular entertainment. Without people raising their objections, you'd still be watching Love Thy Neighbour and Bernard Manning and Benny Hill. Millions of people laughed at all of those examples of fiction but thankfully some critical thinking was applied. People stopped watching and chose alternatives.

No you are missing the point. Freedom of expression means that things that you consider in bad taste can still be considered to be entertainment. You are not the arbiter of what is funny or appropriate. It is however evident that you believe that it is your role to police and approve of or otherwise what films people can watch.

DarrellRiversCriminalBehaviourOrder · 16/06/2023 19:54

None of us have seen it, but let's assume it really is incredibly offensive and inappropriate.

Why is Jennifer Lawrence getting all the criticism and opprobrium? Why not the writer, director, producers, studio head honchos, the rest of the cast?

Why is it all her fault?

DorritLittle · 16/06/2023 19:12

What about the recent Spider-Man film? I don’t think that is Marvel running its course.

Which one? Across the Spiderverse is Sony and unrelated to the live-action Disneys. Tom Holland has had enough for now and is having a long break from acting so we're stuck with dross like Ant-Man Quantumania.

Mirabai · 16/06/2023 19:56

I’ve seen the trailer and my thought was - ick. Why would anyone think the comedy tart with a heart should be redone? With a shy teen? Making it more icky?

Pretty Woman was released at the dog end of the 80s (1990) It’s a different world now. Cringe on so many levels.

I really like Jennifer Lawrence but this was a bad choice.

RegainingTheWill2023 · 16/06/2023 19:56

I'm not advocating banning the film nor have I told anyone not to go. I'm expressing my opinion and my disappointment that in 2023 this is the plot line of a multimillion dollar film. And I'm expressing my disappointment and frustration that millions will spend money to go and see it without thinking.

Haven’t read the thread but I guess posters are criticising her for choosing such an ick film. She’s beautiful and a great Oscar winning actress - why would she stop to this?

Everyone else involved - I’m assuming this is their level.

Fisharejumping · 16/06/2023 19:58

I bet it’s better than that awful
film she starred in about a mop. Jeez, I still want those two hours back that I spent watching that crap.

And yes the premise of this sounds poor.

Fudgewomble · 16/06/2023 20:00

I read this thread, thought it sounded terrible, watched the trailer and…reader I laughed out loud. Several times. Yes it’s ick but she’s a great comedic actor.

Imnotahoarderreally · 16/06/2023 20:16

@RegainingTheWill2023 in 2006 Channel 4 aired a documentary about the Benny Hill show. The young audience shown a compilation of clips from the show rated it favourably, which surprised me. Although there is a lot of innuendo tbf it’s the male characters who are mocked. The women always emerge as the smartest.
I accept it’s visually a rather saucy seaside postcard type show though.

“mind if I touch your wiener?” - cringe cringe could not finish the trailer,
another forgettable JL film, the worst being the execrable Mother!

burnoutbabe · 16/06/2023 20:32

That one with Chris Pratt was sold as a romcom but actually turned into a film about a sad man who effectively doomed her to death and had a lot of consent issues.

She is not well advised on roles to take.

SocksAndTheCity · 16/06/2023 20:33

I love Legally Blonde!

I saw the trailer to this and it looks cack. The new Barbie film with Margot Robbie, on the other hand, looks fantastic 😀

lljkk · 16/06/2023 20:33

What movie plot do you Posters want to see JL in?
Tell us what that movie should be.

I don't see many films so am easily surprised & entertained. Except that I'm not because all sorts of things bore & offend me.

The premise of this particular film looks fairly predictable but amusing enough. I could achieve far greater waste of my time for 2 hours like browsing on MN.

44PumpLane · 16/06/2023 17:24

Just watched the trailer....looks fun!

Can't say I'm known for my high brow film tastes, but I laughed out loud a few times watching the trailer 😄

DysonSpheres · 16/06/2023 20:40

I was scratching my head when I saw the trailer too. She's a brilliant actress, I can only assume money is tight..then again she reportedly was extremely distressed doing some scenes from the Mother! film. Perhaps that's why she's doing something so far removed this time.

DoubleTime · 16/06/2023 20:41

Just watched the trailer. Its dreadful............

LaMaG · 16/06/2023 20:42

Just saw the trailer OMG looks awful. How does this stuff get funded. Looks almost as bad as that book club movie trailer from a few months ago. Definitely won't be watching!

PipinwasAuntieMabelsdog · 16/06/2023 20:59

DH saw the trailer and said. 'it's a bit grim isn't it and a surprising premise in these days of respect for different sexual expression'

Rewis · 16/06/2023 21:02

The early 00's romcom genre is making a comeback.
