To get a windchime??

Moving house soon, finally I will have a beautiful garden to make my own. I have coveted a particular type of windchime (fairly expensive, gorgeous deep resonant sound) for literally ten years. A currently active thread has inspired me to ask: is it in fact unreasonable for me to put one up in my garden?

Doubts have niggled at me about the fact that obviously neighbours will be able to hear it, and I've wondered whether it's ok to put it up; BUT, then I've thought, windchimes are as popular as ever, surely it's not unreasonable to put one up?

So mumsnet please help with my extremely mundane conundrum. I'm torn between my yearning for this lovely windchime I've wanted for a decade, and my disinclination to irritate and bother my new neighbours. Help! POVs welcome!

What rubbish, other people have dogs and children making far more noise. I really have never understood the MN obsession about the sound of windchimes. If people want me to not have windchimes then they must keep their dogs, screaming children and noisy teens indoors!

If you were my neighbour I’d light a Smokey bonfire every single day 😁

Imnotahoarderreally · 16/06/2023 08:01

I love wind chimes.
However we have a very large garden surrounded by fields so not a problem to our neighbours.
It’s wild animals and birds that are noisy here. A lot noisier than wind chimes.
I wonder if mnetters would complain about normal countryside noises!

LookItsMeAgain · 16/06/2023 08:06

Unless you live somewhere really rural and not overlooked by neighbours and can't hear your nearest neighbours, then no, don't get a wind chime.

They are weapons of torture.

Genuinely.

It's like a dripping tap for neighbours who do get to "enjoy" the sounds while you're nowhere to be seen and not sitting out enjoying the sounds yourself. They should not be permitted in built up areas. Ever.

Don't do it.

Please don't do it.

merrymelodies · 16/06/2023 08:20

I love windchimes. I had three at one point. Neighbours have never complained.

merrymelodies · 16/06/2023 08:21

Woodstock chimes!

tiger2691 · 16/06/2023 08:48

I cannot abide wind chimes or whistling.

Only4nomore · 16/06/2023 09:19

I loved them....until my neighbour got one 🤣 I swear she's moved it closer to my house too it drives my son up the wall as his bedroom is closest to it. He said he is going to sabotage it!

tattygrl · 16/06/2023 10:06

In answer to those asking me what make my coveted windchime is, I've checked and it is indeed a Woodstock! Very popular among us windchime appreciators apparently. They have a wide range on their site, with different features like specific melodies, octave doubling, loads 😍and they're definitely not the tinny, plinky plonky type windchimes at all. Deep, rich sound.

Does deep rich sound mean 'very loud annoying noise'?😁

Well, as I have learnt on this thread, yes, to many people it is an exact synonym 😂

I hate wind chimes Op, sorry. I remember being completed frazzled by one in my old house - I was a sleep deprived first time mum and I could hear them ALL THE TIME when it was windy. Hated it so much.

Doone21 · 16/06/2023 11:50

Just ask them

PuddlesPityParty · 16/06/2023 13:36

Omg I don’t get the hate from them! They’re no more annoying that hearing children scream / cry, dogs barking / people talking. People seem to forget we live in a society amongst other people and as such will hear noises from other people!

I love wind chimes OP - go for it!!!!!

Plunkplink · 16/06/2023 14:03

God no, don’t do it to your neighbours, wind chimes are noisy all day and all night every day of the year. The most determined motorcyclist or dog can’t rival a wind chime for antisocial behaviour. If your neighbours haven’t complained it’s because they are too polite or on antidepressants

Might be worth getting 2 for when someone destroys the first one you put up.

😂👏😎

Maybe give it a bit of thought?

Do you hear children screaming, dogs barking and people talking all night long when it's windy?

No you don't. But you do hear bloody windchimes!

I would actually hate you if you were my neighbour and you got some.

StrawberryWater · 16/06/2023 14:19

I don’t mind them during the day but at 3am when I’m trying to sleep and am being woken up by them I can’t fucking stand them.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 15/06/2023 22:31

I'm definitely being cremated if there's even the remotest chance of being buried under a sodding wind chime and irritated for eternity

Good thinking!

Yeah actually - I hear people have screaming matches in the street at 2am too. Think about it, not everyone lives in nice little areas 🙄

You can also bring them inside if it’s gonna be a windy night, not hard is it.

Seems to be for a lot of people!

Sagittariusrising · 16/06/2023 14:35

@StrawberryWater THIS!

The family opposite me had one at their front door and it was a bloody nightmare at night, especially in warmer weather with windows open.

They had it for ages but then it mysteriously disappeared overnight ..... 😉

TokyoSushi · 16/06/2023 14:43

Horrendous. Our neighbour has had one for about 3 weeks and it is SO annoying.

But both sides of him have dogs & kids and he has neither so I think we have to put up with it.

RedMBristol · 16/06/2023 15:51

My neighbours (who are completely awful and it's truly been their life's work to try to drive us out for over 30 years) put up a noisy windchime on their front porch just below our bedroom window. It kept us awake for years on even mildly windy nights. We couldn't reach it to take it down or do anything else about it.

We had numerous issues with them from harassment to assult, which the Police took them to court (and won both cases) on our behalf. A windchime was the least of our worries but had a 'drip drip' effect on our daily lives.

Our 'crime'? Well it was pretty much that right from the start we didn't give them the attention and pander to their needs and orders that the previous neighbours did. We kept ourselves to ourselves and didn't lend them things including money when asked after it became apparent fairly early it was all take, take, take from them.

So my advice keep the windchimes indoors and enjoy them by an open window and get along with your neighbours, as it's pretty miserable if you don't. My husband wouldn't move as he said he wouldn't be driven out. I'm not so sure, if I had my time again I think I would have been happier elsewhere.

As I said we have had over 30 years of this. We were early 20's when we moved here and the neighbours were 50 +. They must be mid 80's now and are still a pain at times. Their live in son aged mid 50's continues the hate for them now :-(
