Neighbours windchime

It’s massive. It’s not even next door to me but the next one accross, terraced houses. It’s so loud. Luckily can’t hear it in the house but sat in garden and the slight bit of breeze and it’s all I can hear. Why?!?! Why have them in your garden?! They annoy other people! Tempted to have a fire in the garden tonight but really don’t want to upset my other nice neighbors. I just don’t get it. It’s so loud and so annoying!

Because he’s a drug dealer and looks a bit scary… 👀

Even before you saying he was a drug dealer I was going to suggest you hunt down someone to buy weed off in the hope it might help you relax a little. It's only wind chimes! It's definitely the way forward if he's a dealer. Win win all round. If you become a frequent customer he might even be ok about you asking him to take them down. Failing that, it's stepladders and a pair in scissors in the dead on night.

ex EHO with 20+ years experience in noise nuisance and statutory nuisance. yes, the noise of windchimes which are clearly audible in your garden and not your house could be considered a statutory noise nuisance under the environmental protection act 1990. so talk to them and ask their advice.

So presumably if a neighbour's collection of wind chimes can be heard from inside your house with all your windows and doors shut, stopping you from getting a good night's sleep, that's definitely a noise nuisance EH can do something about?

millymae · 15/06/2023 14:15

We have a wind chime which is not huge or particularly noisy but I’m sure my neighbours on either side, and perhaps the one directly behind if the wind is the right direction must be able to hear it.
If any of them said anything to me about it I’d be telling them as nicely as possible that it’s the price they pay for the cat that repeatedly poos in my garden, the motorbike that is left to warm up outside our bedroom morning most mornings at 6.00am coupled with the general noise that comes from the seemingly endless garden renovations in a garden that’s the size of a postage stamp that have been going on for months every time the weather allows and the droning sound of someone who appears to spend every sunny day sitting in the garden either talking on the phone or face to face with visitors pontificating on everything and anything or listening to heavy metal.
Now I’ve got all that off my chest I feel much better - but my point is that we probably all have or do something that annoys our neighbours and that if we are going to complain we have to be sure that they won’t have a legitimate cause to complain about us

Rubycoola · 15/06/2023 14:20

My neighbours, who have 3 children and a lot of friends/family over all the time, all yelling and splashing and going up and down on scooters all evening - have now decided to get a caged bird. It never stops chirping and has some sort of squeaky toy.

It's all I can hear, all day, everyday in my garden. Even their kids don't entirely drown it out. I don't know how they live with it. It's so irritating and thoughtless!

we need a thread, strictly monitored, with information like this!

what do you mean febreeze? I have been on MN over 15 years and commented many times on many threads that I am an ex eho with this sort of experience?

sahm9 · 15/06/2023 14:22

I bloody love wind chimes but I’m smart enough to know not everyone does. I’d never have one in my garden but one day if I have no neighbours near by I would love one!!!

RobertsRadio · 15/06/2023 14:22

I don't mind wind chimes myself, although some are more tuneful than others. Had some long time ago, they were made from shells and hung by my tall bedroom window, I loved them and thought they were cool, but it was the seventies.

I would still prefer the sound of wind chimes to yappy, barking dogs, crappy music and my neighbours yelling to each other. Compared to those and the constant hedge trimmers, lawn mowers, drilling etc, wind chimes are lovely.

I mean this kind of very helpful information should be highlighted somewhere, because they are very helpful! Neighbours from hell helpful info!

And by "strictly monitored" I meant to stop the thread being then flooded by a lot of "following, interesting, following, posting to mark etc".

Sorry, I was very positive about your post, didn't mean my words to come across as argumentative!

BashfulClam · 15/06/2023 14:30

Hate them, it’s just so idiots know when the wind is blowing, neighbour had them on his gate which he never closes so it swings and bangs repeatedly the wind…ffs! He also now has a basketball hoop so we get to hear the ball thumping constantly now. I fantasise about closing his gate and padlocking it so he can’t open it!

mummymeister · 15/06/2023 14:31

Febreeze ah I see yes, I would be up to do something on this. Noise nuisance is poorly understood and would do what I could to help and explain.

Bluebells1970 · 15/06/2023 14:33

A windchime would sound far nicer than our fecking neighbours mutant bulldog that was barking outside at 6 am this morning.

icelollycraving · 15/06/2023 14:40

My neighbour has them, I don’t like them.
They in turn, have to put up with dh talking loudly on his phone with the patio doors open and our garden being a complete tip since he got ill. Other side have lots of barbecues. At the back have a trampoline and a toddler they allow on it v early on weekends.
We are all a bit knobbish. Wind chimes are the least of my worries.

justanothermanicmonday1 · 15/06/2023 14:46

The amount of threads I've read over the years about wind chime wars Id hilarious yet understandable 🤣

This would trigger my misophonia lol

Absolutely dreadful things. I don’t understand why people think it’s ok to subject all their neighbours to this permanent noise nuisance.. at least loud music and parties in the summer end. These things tinkle on… 🤦‍♀️

Exactly. Kids playing outside isn’t all day and all night.. music playing isn’t, but that windchime stays there all bloody day and all bloody night no matter the weather And I’m considering going over there to snip it down and ram it up the drug dealers arse. We’ll probably not cos I’m scared haha

I love my wind chimes, they help me cope with the neighbours whiny brats one side and the kid with a drum kit the other side.

WonderingWanda · 15/06/2023 14:56

I agree op, I think windchimes or a noisy cockerel would both drive me to commit a crime.

then that's self defence . It's different.

BebbanburgIsMine · 15/06/2023 15:01

I don't have any windchimes in my garden, but I do love the sound of them from other neighbours.

I find it a beautiful, relaxing sound.

Topseyt123 · 15/06/2023 15:03

I can't say that the sound of wind chimes would bother me. I quite like them and have two sets of my own.

Mine are not hung outside, one is just inside my back door and the other is just inside my patio doors. So they only sound occasionally when either or both of those are open and they stop completely once they are closed.

I find the sound of them quite relaxing although I know it isn't everyone's cup of tea.

HappiDaze · 15/06/2023 15:05

I told my friend to take her windchime down once after hearing it all night and she told me her neighbours DC had nightmares so I said it's likely from the windchime.

Without a word she just took it down because she wasn't attached to it and because her bedroom was at the front it didn't keep her up at night

MysteryBelle · 15/06/2023 15:07

I agree. In theory, wind chimes should be relaxing and meditative and just plain nice to listen to. I like fresh breezes, I like the sound of chimes. But put them together in little miniature clanging chimes going every which a way hanging in the wind, and it is an abomination. Bizarre but unfortunately true.

ThickSkinnedSoWhat · 15/06/2023 15:08

I'd be much more annoyed about an unnecessary bonfire polluting the air than a bloody windchime. My old neighbour used to light her stupid chimnea thing every night (I lived in the flat above her and her garden directly below my windows. She burned anything in sight, any washing out would stink and then the smell would drift in any open window. She also had wind chimes. They didn't bother me at all.

ThursdayFreedom · 15/06/2023 15:08

LaLaLouella · 15/06/2023 13:06

It's irritating and thoughtless - of course you shouldn't have to wear earplugs in your own garden FFS!

Can you creep over and snip the strings in the dead of night....

@LaLaLouella

3rd post in for the usual MN Response!! not too bad Lala

my first move would be to go and ask if they could burn them move them to maybe the front door (would that help you??) or just ask them if they can please take them down because they're loud enough to be heard in your garden and they're bothering you.

my second move would depend on their attitude.

I have to say I'd swap you for my next but one neighbours!! But if it annoys you, it annoys you. A lot of people would gladly swap my neighbours for theirs 🤷🏻‍♀️
