I've currently got a large tub of Sudocrem propping open my sliding sash window because it won't stay up on its own!

Must look delightful to passers by.

Has anyone got any other suggestions on how to multi purpose things?

Spaghetti spoon as back scratcher. It's really good

Eggs don't crack if you start them at room temp!

But how do you then time them precisely? I like my yolk runny and my white set, which equates to 6.5min cooking time in boiling water.

djivdfj · 15/06/2023 21:09

Woah I have joined the spaghetti spoon fans! Grin

@RobertaFirmino Use Pampers like other normal people who do not store shit scrapers in their bathroom.

Not that I have to justify my parenting choices to anyone but disposable nappies will still be in landfill in 400 years time. Every nappy that has ever been used is still in existence. We have a spatula that was bought for the sole purpose of disposing of human waste into the sewerage system and sits in the toilet brush holder. It has never been in our kitchen and nobody would ever confuse it for that purpose because it lives in the toilet and is cleaned regularly. Bonus is I don't have a bin full of human excrement sitting outside festering for 3 weeks in this heat. But clearly I'm not normal 🙄

MrTiddlesTheCat · 15/06/2023 21:12

I use old iron irons as doorstops. The ones you used to heat up on the stove top. They're great and easy to move with your foot because they have handles.

An old broom handle through the sleeves of judo jackets to help them dry faster and in the right shape. Also useful to hang excess washing/ironing in the utility room.
2kg of dry spaghetti in a vase as a knife holder.
2 old pillowcases sewn together and two old pillows to make a washable square dog bed.
I keep Quaker Oats canisters and Lidl yoghurt buckets but have run out of uses for them!

Ive tonnes of pillows and am so (sew?) making one.

Dunnoburt · 15/06/2023 21:13

Oh and also long spaghetti to light deep narrow candles when I can't find a bbq lighter!

The unbroken wooden chopsticks that you get from a take away that still form a tethered < shape - for a cat food pouch emptying device.

open the top, slide the base of the pouch between the prongs and pull up and the two lengths of the chop sticks will squeeze the pouch as you pull so all the food comes out. No fiddling or flicking of the pouch and you don't ever get food on your hands. If any gets on the chop sticks they can go in the dishwasher.

Am doing this!

I think they mean you have the eggs at room temperature to start off with, not from the fridge. Then they don’t crack of you put them in boiling water. This is what I do.

I started using Delia Smith’s method a few years ago and it does seem to work every time.

Boil the pan of water, put in room temperature egg and boil it for 1 minute exactly. Then take the pan off the heat, put a lid on and leave the egg in the hot water for exactly 6 minutes.

The egg comes out perfectly soft boiled every time!

Royalbloo · 15/06/2023 21:55

Put them in when the water is cold and time from when the water starts boiling????

A super thin metal bookmark to empty the bath 🤣 one of those turny know ones that lift the plug but it stopped working years ago.....gonna be up shit creek when the bookmark either breaks or gets lost 🤣🤣🤣 (can't believe I've admitted that!!)

The chain holding my bath plug broke, so I've got a loop of ribbon tied to it.

The cardboard price tags from clothes are repurposed as book marks.

Cant reach the kitchen window to open or close as sink in front of it and I'm short!!
Flick it up on open with wooden spatula and pull it closed with a whisk!

Simplestateside · 15/06/2023 22:33

We have a wasps nest in our lounge as an ornament, I use a plastic chop stick to test the moisture level of the soil for my houseplants, and a box of tissues is used to prop the lounge window open. Love this thread!

flummingbird · 15/06/2023 22:40

I use an ikea plastic bag storage thing to hold rolls of wrapping paper. Stops them all unravelling.

Talk me through ? I am intrigued

Squirt bath with cleaner of choice scrub all over with brush, rinse. Try it.

If you have Lego or small toys on the floor, use the dustpan and “sweep” them into it on the floor then scoop into toy box. Best on wood but works on carpet.

report back maybe it’s just me

This has reminded me of another. Our kitchen windows are above our kitchen sink and I can shove them open but can't reach the handle to close them again, but I have a colander with a nice long handle that I can hold upside down and use the "bowl" of the colander to catch the window handle to pull it closed.

I also have an extendable window cleaner spongey thing that I keep in the bathroom for any time the ceiling gets mouldy, just a spray of mould remover and sweep it over the ceiling and it's sorted.

I use a soup ladle to close the window over the sink. It's a push out one. OH pushes it out too far

justasking111 · 15/06/2023 23:11

I was given a very pretty china cake stand. I now keep often used herbs and spice jars on it easy to rotate to find what you need.

Wooden clothes pegs to secure frozen bags of food in the freezer.

China spoon rest for teabags.

A scrub daddy wand for cleaning bath, shower and tiles. Used it the other day to clean the soft top of a convertible. Amazing thing.

Knitting needle that no longer has a twin for cleaning the hoover hose out.

Knitting needles also do sterling work moving fallen cards behind bookshelves.

Loft hook doubles as an under the sofa retrieval tool.

There's a flip flop in my loft as the light switch must have Been installed by someone with longer arms than me.
I have an extendable floor mop for cleaning my car of snow so probably 2 days of the year!
Gu pots for sorting big lego builds and beads, fantastic set of lids purchased for these recently.
Ice cube tray for my earrings in my drawer.

recklessgran · 15/06/2023 23:32

I use a cheese grater to grate hard boiled eggs for egg sandwiches or egg mayo. So much quicker and easier that trying to mash them.

I use a one of those pink plastic scoops that came with a tub of Vanish laundry powder to dish out my cat's dry food. I buy the big 3 kg bags of dry food as she has to have a special diet, and I find the scoop is the ideal size to dish out just the right amount.

I do exactly the same.

Georgeandzippyzoo · 16/06/2023 01:13

I use our potato masher to pull yhr kitchen window shut!

mathanxiety · 16/06/2023 01:18

I have an extendable marshmallow toasting fork that I use exclusively to string lights and bead garlands onto the Christmas tree.

Beyond revolting.

How? It's human waste going down the toilet.
She's not using it for anything else and it's better than landfill disposables.
