Range Rover twat or was I unreasonable? (With diagram)

attached obligatory diagram to try to explain what happened today.

I was cycling up a road where if there are cars parked on both sides, there is only room for one car to get through.

On this particular road, the right hand side was completely full but there was only one car parked in the left (the blue one).

I (green) initially pulled behind the yellow car who had stopped. I then realised that he had stopped because the red car - the Range Rover - was stopped in the middle of road chatting to guy in blue car (both in their cars). I waited for a bit and the Range Rover showed no sign of moving, so I thought I’ll try to squeeze between them. So I followed dotted green line but when I got close to the red and blue car it was a bit tight so I dinged my bell as if the RR moved slightly to his left I could get past. But he just looked at me, smirked then edged forward making it more difficult. Pathetic really.

so I decided just to squeeze past anyway and when passing his window and having noticed there were kids in the back of the car I said “your dad’s a twat” and cycled off. He exploded and shouted “you cunt, you fucking cunt!”

now I know it’s foolish to incur the wrath of an Angry Man as he could have hurt me. And I know that I shouldn’t have said a naughty word in front of the kids but I absolutely loved his reaction! I felt like I’d stood up to him and he was utterly enraged I hadn’t cowtowed to him.

but should I just have waited until he finished his conversation?

but I want to see what the MN consensus is - AIBU?

Well done you. Twat bloke.
Brilliant diagram.

NeverThatSerious · 12/06/2023 19:59

I wouldn’t have blamed you for saying something to him directly but it wasn’t on to say that to his children, definitely lost yourself the moral high ground there.

Alwayswonderedwhy · 12/06/2023 19:59

Well it might make him think twice about being a twat in front of his kids again. Yanbu

PuttingDownRoots · 12/06/2023 19:59

Red car was being a twat. If conversation was that a important he could have parked properly, not blocked a road. Not fair to involve the kids though.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 12/06/2023 20:00

I don't think you were unreasonable for cycling between them, but you were unreasonable for what you shouted to his children. An over-exaggerated "Excuse Me!" was all that was needed.

Elevel · 12/06/2023 20:00

You were both twats - you wouldn't have been if you hadn't said that to his kids. I'm not surprised he had some choice words for you after that.

Peppermint81 · 12/06/2023 20:03

Shouldn't of said that to his kids.
Would it really of hurt to wait a few mins?

He obviously being a twat but life's full of them.

Bathtimebubble · 12/06/2023 20:04

Ha, that’s brilliant! You have my utmost on respect!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 12/06/2023 20:04

I agree with Jennifer, above. Saying "Excuse ME" to him would've been better. It's not good to make disparaging remarks about someone in front of their dch, however much of a twat they're being.

StraightOuttaChorlton · 12/06/2023 20:05

I’m a driver, I can’t even ride a bike, and think you were absolutely spot on. His kids deserve to realise people think their dad is a twat and his behaviour confirms that he definitely is one (depending on their ages they might already know of course).

neverenoughchelseaboots · 12/06/2023 20:07

I know you’re not supposed to say it - but you’re my hero.

I don’t know why cars are such aggressive bellends to cyclists. The possible implications of hitting one are massive, yet they just use their cars to frighten people.

Winederlust · 12/06/2023 20:12

Nobody commenting on the angry swearing from the bloke I see 😑
OP I wouldn't normally condone swearing to the children but he certainly proved your point...and from his reaction I'd guess it's not the first time they've heard such choice words!

JayAlfredPrufrock · 12/06/2023 20:12

I think you were daft going between the cars. I’d have gone on the outside of the RR.

PoppedNotFried · 12/06/2023 20:13

I’m just here to compliment the diagram. Great use of colour.

Love and light.

Quveas · 12/06/2023 20:15

You are both twats. He shouldn't have blocked the road. But you didn't "stand up to him". You used passive aggression aimed at children. How very "big" of you to pick on two children who were doing nothing wrong. If you were going to be such a coward you should have said nothing.

Malarandras · 12/06/2023 20:16

The children should have been left out of it, they have no agency over their father. You were completely wrong to do that. Stand up to poor drivers by all means - but not their children. It’s completely unfair on the kids to drag them into it.

PonyPatter44 · 12/06/2023 20:18

She wasn't "picking on the children ", FFS. She was indirectly having a pop at a rude twattish man who thought he owned the world. Serves him right that he was made to look bad in front of his kids. Noone died, and he might be less of a twat next time.

SisterWedge · 12/06/2023 20:21

Yabu for directing your comments at his kids.

He was also bu for being a twat

EnjoyingTheSilence · 12/06/2023 20:21

Assuming they were his children, what you said was factually correct. He is a twat.

MinionsHooray · 12/06/2023 20:21

You sound pathetic to drag kids into it… So bloody pathetic.

I can’t believe you actually spoke to kids like that when they didn’t do anything wrong.

Your just as much of a Twat as he is for blocking the road. You showed yourself right up.

bibbityboppityboo · 12/06/2023 20:21

Couldn't you have just cycled on the pavement to get round them, or asked them to move?

You were both horrendously rude for swearing - you shouldn't have started it / antagonised the situation by saying something like that to someone's children at all (surely both cars were being idiots, not just RR!) and he was totally out of line by responding with such disgusting language.

50/50!

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/06/2023 20:22

Why say it to his kids? That was unnecessary and pretty cowardly.

MinionsHooray · 12/06/2023 20:22

What kind of bellend brings kids into it. Couldn’t have a pop at the bloke direct but she could say it to the kiddies.

ItsNotRocketSalad · 12/06/2023 20:23

Wow you're so brave taking your irritation out on some kids. Inspirational!

Had the OP said 'you're a twat' would that have been better? Sometimes I think pointing out the fact that he's been a twat with the kids on board is more effective.
