Range Rover twat or was I unreasonable? (With diagram)

attached obligatory diagram to try to explain what happened today.

I was cycling up a road where if there are cars parked on both sides, there is only room for one car to get through.

On this particular road, the right hand side was completely full but there was only one car parked in the left (the blue one).

I (green) initially pulled behind the yellow car who had stopped. I then realised that he had stopped because the red car - the Range Rover - was stopped in the middle of road chatting to guy in blue car (both in their cars). I waited for a bit and the Range Rover showed no sign of moving, so I thought I’ll try to squeeze between them. So I followed dotted green line but when I got close to the red and blue car it was a bit tight so I dinged my bell as if the RR moved slightly to his left I could get past. But he just looked at me, smirked then edged forward making it more difficult. Pathetic really.

so I decided just to squeeze past anyway and when passing his window and having noticed there were kids in the back of the car I said “your dad’s a twat” and cycled off. He exploded and shouted “you cunt, you fucking cunt!”

now I know it’s foolish to incur the wrath of an Angry Man as he could have hurt me. And I know that I shouldn’t have said a naughty word in front of the kids but I absolutely loved his reaction! I felt like I’d stood up to him and he was utterly enraged I hadn’t cowtowed to him.

but should I just have waited until he finished his conversation?

but I want to see what the MN consensus is - AIBU?

I’m another one that thinks this was actually pretty bloody funny. I‘m picturing you as Liz from Motherland 😅

hennaoj · 12/06/2023 22:37

I'm confused a little by the diagram, is the yellow car on the wrong side of the road?

AP5Diva · 12/06/2023 22:44

You went around a stopped car on a road that is typically one lane due to parked cars on both sides not knowing what was coming the other way.

If the RR had not been stopped, you would have been in an immediate head in collision with him.

That was a very unsafe manoeuvre to do. You should have waited behind the yellow car, or dismounted and walked the cycle along the pavement. You knew the yellow car wasn’t double parked.

Then to yell obscenities to the drivers‘ children was twatty behaviour on your part. You had no right of way in this situation. I dont agree his outrage at you swearing at his kids meant he then deserved it, if anyone had done that to my kids, they’d get an earful too.

AmeliaWarnerBros · 12/06/2023 22:47

I'd love a Range- missing point entirely

Well done, OP. Tbf, this prick was being a twat. You weren't wrong.

Someone needs to tell the kids so 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hellocatshome · 12/06/2023 22:52

I cant believe you have admitted to telling someone's kids that their Dad is a twat over a minor driving dispute. Did it make you feel big and clever? I can guarantee if someone said this about you to your kids you would be livid.

TheProcrastinati · 12/06/2023 22:56

Did it make you feel big and clever?

well I’m fat and have a PhD so I generally always feel that way.

You sound pathetic to drag kids into it… So bloody pathetic.

I can’t believe you actually spoke to kids like that when they didn’t do anything wrong.

Your just as much of a Twat as he is for blocking the road. You showed yourself right up.

@MinionsHooray

The OP never said the kids did anything wrong.
Hahaha “you showed yourself right up.”

ZenNudist · 12/06/2023 23:02

Well he clear has no problem with his kids hearing worse swear words if he called you a c*.

Don't understand why yellow wasn't beeping. I'd definitely beep!

Soapyspuds · 12/06/2023 23:10

I do not think that saying that to the child was called for.

A simple ding of your handlebars as you accidently bump the side of his car is the right play here.

Frabbits · 12/06/2023 23:15

Absolutely fine to squeeze in between the two cars.

I'm not sure saying what you said was entirely sensible, firstly it's pretty passive-aggressive-cowardly to address it to his kids and secondly it's just putting yourself at unnecessary risk, from both a man deciding to have a go at you and a man in a big car deciding to have a go at you. Yes, you weren't wrong but honestly people get hurt for doing things like that.

Clymene · 12/06/2023 23:20

Good for you. Their dad is indeed a twat. They probably are already wondering that so it's good to have external confirmation

LatteOneShotplease · 12/06/2023 23:25

Coolhwip · 12/06/2023 21:51

Well that was… dull.

Too many words for you, was it?

The whole thing is rather - dull, in the first place really.
And yes, I was wasting my time posting.

And you are pathetic.

JandalsAlways · 12/06/2023 23:32

Well done. Anyone who says cunt in front of their kids is a twat. Brilliant diagram.

Bagsundermyeyestoday · 12/06/2023 23:35

jmscp · 12/06/2023 22:05

Amazing 👏🏻

I really wouldn't worry about saying "twat" to the children of a man who's quite happy to yell "fucking cunt" in front of them 😂

Exactly, not sure why everyone thinks this is a big deal. Weird.

WheresSpring · 12/06/2023 23:37

I’m also in the yanbu brigade. Being called out in front of his kids was fine - might make him think twice🤞. On a separate note I think the insult twat can have different meanings depending on where you’re from - I grew up with it being another word for idiot yet an Irish friend was livid when I used it in front of her as for her it’s another version of the c word…

Gothambutnotahamster · 12/06/2023 23:55

StraightOuttaChorlton · 12/06/2023 20:05

I’m a driver, I can’t even ride a bike, and think you were absolutely spot on. His kids deserve to realise people think their dad is a twat and his behaviour confirms that he definitely is one (depending on their ages they might already know of course).

Absolutely agree - YANBU.

Love you OP! And the guy totally deserved it- only way the idiot might learn

BigCheeseSandwich · 13/06/2023 00:03

"Well he clear has no problem with his kids hearing worse swear words if he called you a c*."

This.

OP, you're my hero.

BigCheeseSandwich · 13/06/2023 00:04

Should also add that I'm a cyclist who drew a spunking cock with lipstick onto an SUV that was parked right in the middle of the cycleway the other day so possibly I'm just as much a bellend as the OP.

Saschka · 13/06/2023 00:05

If that dad is happy to shout “cunt” in front of his kids, I’m sure they are quite used to hearing the word “twat”. So YANBU from me.
