Range Rover twat or was I unreasonable? (With diagram)

attached obligatory diagram to try to explain what happened today.

I was cycling up a road where if there are cars parked on both sides, there is only room for one car to get through.

On this particular road, the right hand side was completely full but there was only one car parked in the left (the blue one).

I (green) initially pulled behind the yellow car who had stopped. I then realised that he had stopped because the red car - the Range Rover - was stopped in the middle of road chatting to guy in blue car (both in their cars). I waited for a bit and the Range Rover showed no sign of moving, so I thought I’ll try to squeeze between them. So I followed dotted green line but when I got close to the red and blue car it was a bit tight so I dinged my bell as if the RR moved slightly to his left I could get past. But he just looked at me, smirked then edged forward making it more difficult. Pathetic really.

so I decided just to squeeze past anyway and when passing his window and having noticed there were kids in the back of the car I said “your dad’s a twat” and cycled off. He exploded and shouted “you cunt, you fucking cunt!”

now I know it’s foolish to incur the wrath of an Angry Man as he could have hurt me. And I know that I shouldn’t have said a naughty word in front of the kids but I absolutely loved his reaction! I felt like I’d stood up to him and he was utterly enraged I hadn’t cowtowed to him.

but should I just have waited until he finished his conversation?

but I want to see what the MN consensus is - AIBU?

I also think he was setting an appalling example for his kids so I hope they did ask him questions. Or laugh at him. I also suspect it made him look like a twat in front of his mate too.

Well I think you made yourself look like more of the twat tbh. They probably had a good laugh at you.

That was my thought. Stopping in the middle of the road is selfish, but they probably just laughed at OP afterwards. I would have thought the Range Rover driver was annoying if I'd witnessed it, but would probably also have laughed at OP too. 🙈

Sunshineclouds11 · 12/06/2023 20:55

😂😂😂 love this, well done 👏🏼

George4567 · 12/06/2023 20:55

But he was being a twat.
I had a twatty parent - he maintained he was right at all times. No one called him out. Ever. I really wish they had. I might have thought it wasn't just me who thought he was a twat. Might have made things easier.

Dymaxion · 12/06/2023 20:57

By screeching even worse profanities infront of their children ? As I said this isn't about the 'swearing' by @TheProcrastinati , these children will hear worse on a daily basis, this is about someone not kowtowing to their Father's perceived superiority.

timetorefresh · 12/06/2023 20:57

By involving the kids, you made yourself a twat too

Dymaxion · 12/06/2023 21:06

And lets be honest, if this is the Dads normal driving blocking the road style, I am sure those children are now up to date with all the obscence hand gestures available throughout the UK and also a cornucopia of swear words, as provided by their own dear Father !

whynotwhatknot · 12/06/2023 21:11

Sorry we're all supposed to sit and wait while someone just randomly blocks a road

whynotwhatknot · 12/06/2023 21:13

i would have said worse i forgot to say

Cheeserollanyone · 12/06/2023 21:15

🤣 well done. He was a knob.

Loopylou7219 · 12/06/2023 21:21

Not sure why you couldn't have just said "you're a twat" to him as you cycled by. How old were the children? Some kids are sensitive and you could have really upset them. He does indeed sound like a twat though.

crabbyoldappletree · 12/06/2023 21:27

Both vehicle drivers were selfish twats.
But OP, be careful, especially on two wheels with nobs in four, there are a lot of very angry twats driving around at the moment.

LatteOneShotplease · 12/06/2023 21:43

Ooh no, I don't think what you did was right, or clever, or classy. Almost the opposite.

I ride my bike along a - long, very straight road like that, with double parking, only room for one vehicle down the centre, and even then there ae takeaways or Amazon parcels being delivered, and the road blocked. In that case I personally would usually nip in between the parked cars, and onto the pavement rather than a stand-off. I am not a coward, or a doormat, but I see selfish people like that regularly, and just want to get on my way.
(I once did mutter the t-word, as a man drove very close rather than let me through (the road has a general rule that, if you turn onto it, and someone is already driving down it, you wait. The same SHOULD apply to bikes (rolls eyes), but not every can manage to be polite in that way. He must have heard me, and stopped immediately and shouted, "What did you say?!?!", so I stopped, and, hoping he had not heard 100% clearly, said "I said - you could have waited WAITed". God know what he would have done if I had repeated that he was a twat.

But I would never have said anything to children. That's a bit weird.

SunnySideDownBriefly · 12/06/2023 21:46

Brilliant! This has made me laugh a lot! Obviously you shouldn't have said it but I kind of think you are a legend for saying it :D

He was a dick and deserved it. His reaction shows that it's not often that someone stands up to him so bravo!

Coolhwip · 12/06/2023 21:50

YANBU, given his actions and his reactions, you better believe his kids have seen and heard a lot worse.

But of course MNers will tell you you should have been a genteel, non-swearing lady and won’t anyone think of the children.

Well that was… dull.

3AndStopping · 12/06/2023 21:55

Well that was… dull.

🤣🤣🤣

GeekyThings · 12/06/2023 22:00

Genuinely laughed out loud at that! YANBU, he was being a twat, I'm sure his kids must have noticed by now so you wouldn't have been telling them anything new.

EmeraldFox · 12/06/2023 22:02

I don't think it was right to involve the children or a safe manoeuvre. I would have dismounted and passed on the pavement.

kitsuneghost · 12/06/2023 22:03

A bit of patience hurts no-one. YABU to say to children their dad's a twat

jmscp · 12/06/2023 22:05

Amazing 👏🏻

I really wouldn't worry about saying "twat" to the children of a man who's quite happy to yell "fucking cunt" in front of them 😂

vipersnest1 · 12/06/2023 22:06

I do t understand why you thought it was appropriate to address the children - it was nothing to do with them.

NerrSnerr · 12/06/2023 22:07

TheProcrastinati · 12/06/2023 20:32

Just to be clear, I said “your dad’s a twat” through the open driver window - the kid’s windows in the back were shut.

I don’t think they’ll need therapy.

And cyclists are not bellends. Bellend drivers just accuse them of being bellends for no reason what so ever. I had done absolutely nothing remotely bellendish to the driver before he smirked and tried to make things more difficult for me.

I think the same percentage of cyclists and car drivers are bellends, there are more car drivers on the road though so there are more car bellends.

He was clearly a twat, you didn't need to be an arse to his kids- I imagine he's a prick to others when out and about and they probably have to deal with this shit a lot and they shouldn't have to.

I can imagine the children don't find it as funny as someone who grew up with a parent who would get into arguments with strangers. It was scary and other random people swearing at us wouldn't have made it any better.

FloofCloud · 12/06/2023 22:12

Brilliant!! 😆

FurElise · 12/06/2023 22:20

I'm Team OP for sure - let's face it, those kids already know their dad's a twat and having a cyclist confirm it probably made their day!
