To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

Order iced coffee if you want it cold 🤷‍♀️. If I ordered a hot drink I'd hope it was actually hot and proceed with caution before taking a sip.

Err if you wack a drink into the microwave you can make it scalding - much hotter than a cappuccino or flat white when it gets to your table. Those don't scald you!

sunglassesonthetable · 11/06/2023 16:39

All these 'but you wanted it hot' comments are missing the point.

A cappuccino is not going to scald your mouth.
And There's no flavour in anything that hot.

This woman is doing a useless job regardless if she's targeting you.

Did you ask for a Frappuccino?

Don't be silly.

HelloBridesmaidLiketheBeard · 11/06/2023 16:42

Not sure why you've had so many sarcastic replies, OP. It sounds to me like that waitress has an attitude problem. Maybe she has mistaken you for someone else?

sunglassesonthetable · 11/06/2023 16:42

You think there's a way she can make a coffee hotter just for you? 🤣

Err yep. 🙄

I think you need to address your paranoia...

I regularly use the same coffee shop and the coffee is always a safe temperature and drinkable. One day the lady forgot and put chocolate on my cappuccino by mistake (I’m allergic to it) so I had to regretfully ask her for a new one. She was obviously annoyed and when I got my coffee it was dangerously hot, so hot that the first sip burned my mouth (I wasn’t expecting it to be scalding). So I think they do sometimes make it scalding hot on purpose out of spite.

Definitely. Its the only way to get the customer back isn't it? Like lots on here that seem to think its acceptable

sunglassesonthetable · 11/06/2023 16:44

Another who thinks shit service is fine.

Anaemiafog · 11/06/2023 16:45

Are you the reason I saw 'contains nuts' on peanut butter recently?

Cosyblankets · 11/06/2023 16:45

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 13:55

I actually feel a bit shaky from it. Like I can't eat my sandwich now due to a sore tongue. I've never had that before and I'm 45!

You've never once in 45 years burnt your tongue?

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 16:47

You've never once in 45 years burnt your tongue?

Not to that extent with one sip, no.

azlazee1 · 11/06/2023 16:47

Did you complain to her about the service? Is there a manager you can speak to. I don't know what her problem is but she shouldn't be working in customer service.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 16:48

Are you the reason I saw 'contains nuts' on peanut butter recently?

Tedious. And a bad comparison. As pps upthread have mentioned, cappacinos are not meant to be scalding hot.

Maybe she hates you, having met you just once, before months ago.

Maybe she has RBF

Maybe her husband has just left her

Maybe her dog just died

It almost certainly isn’t you.

That isn't completely ridiculous as tree nuts and peanuts are different

Nothing whatso-fucking-ever to do with the service.

Would it be ok if someone complained that their water was too wet?

Batshit crazy!

Technonan · 11/06/2023 16:53

Coffee shouldn't be scalding, but often is. There was a Mcdonald's case a few years ago where a woman was seriously scalded by a cup of Mcdonald's coffee. People make a joke of it, but she had the cup in her lap as she got herself organised in the car, the cup was insulated so she couldn't tell how hot the coffee was and when it spilt, she got third degree burns to her thighs and 'pelvic area' (wording from the court case). Third degree burns are the most serious, full-thickness burns. She was badly injured, and the burns were life-changing.

Ideally, coffee should be made with water that is just below boiling point. The milk should not be boiled - if it is, it tastes disgusting.

I doubt the woman was acting out of any personal dislike - it sounds like she hates her job and shouldn't be there. But the OP is right about the temperature of the coffee. It shouldn't be that hot.

What temperature is "scolding"?

Reminds me of a notice by the boiling tap at work. "Hot water scolds" . Grin

Coffee with a telling off!

sunglassesonthetable · 11/06/2023 17:05

*Would it be ok if someone complained that their water was too wet?

Batshit crazy!*

Take it you don't drink coffee then?

Marlena1 · 11/06/2023 17:06

I remember getting my daughter a hot chocolate, she grabbed it and drank before I had a chance to check it (off the tray). Her mouth was scalded (I shoved an icecream in but it hurt for ages). Just saying it can happen! Like you I emailed but no response 😕 Plus the woman in McDonalds years ago got a horrific burn from coffee even though people mock her.

Casilero · 11/06/2023 13:48

Hmm well I have lattes all the time both at home and out of the home and they are never scalding hot so she's either shit at making coffee or did it on purpose. It's probably the former though since it took 15 minutes which is far too long to wait for one drink. Regardless, I'd not bother going there again.

I agree. I think she's bad at making coffee. A coffee that's too hot to drink (unless you've specifically asked for it) is a bad coffee.

Cailin66 · 11/06/2023 17:20

How do you make coffee hotter than boiling?

BodyMorphi · 11/06/2023 17:25

I don't understand how they can get coffee this hot.

Water has a finite temperature doesn't it? ie. boiling point. Once it is at boiling point, it will start to evaporate. Then if you take it away from the heat source it will start to cool immediately.

So how is it they can get a liquid so hot? especially if you have milk in it?

Fruitjellies · 11/06/2023 17:27

Well if you live in the UK and have dragged your dogs out on a "long walk" on a day like this maybe she's just giving you a taste of your own medicine?

HereComes5432TheSummerFUN · 11/06/2023 17:28

If you feel uncomfortable there, don't go there again

Go somewhere else
