To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

You cannot complain that a hot coffee is hot because that’s how it’s meant to be.
Its like complaining an ice pole is cold

It's degrees of heat. I drink about 4 or 5 cups of tea a day. So I am used to hot drinks.

If you’re a hot drink person then you would have known it was too hot to drink before taking a sip.

mrssilky · 11/06/2023 15:41

if you sensed a bad vibe the first time, why go back for more? Was she changing the coffee machine beans/whatever and served everyone else who wanted tea or cold drinks first? Also coffee stays hot on a hot day 🤣

ThreeRingCircus · 11/06/2023 15:41

From what you describe (no visible steam and the fact you were waiting a long time) I suspect that she had made your coffee but got distracted serving other customers so microwaved it. That can definitely make liquids burning hot.

In any case the service sounds rubbish so I'd just vote with your feet and not go back.

AllOfThemWitches · 11/06/2023 15:42

Surely you don’t start glugging down a hot drink as soon as you get it?
You let it cool down and then blow and sip it.

You shouldn't have to. Seriously people, sounds as though you're all paying good money for shit coffee. Raise your standards 😆

I can only think it was microwaved and it was a hot spot within the drink (I know microwaves heat from the inside out). Hence why the outside of the cup was not as hot as the contents.

I have a real problem with paying good money for lukewarm coffee. i need to know the name of the cafe and how to offend her so that I can get something that will allow me to sit down and enjoy a drink for ten minutes rather than ten seconds.

HoppingPavlova · 11/06/2023 15:49

Have none of you heard about the case with elderly lady and the McDonald's coffee? There were lots of 'coffee, hot? No way' comments then, too. Poor woman had severe burns after spilling it on herself

This is very different though. The American case was that vile water based coffee, so it is possible to have a cup that’s too hot. The OP had a cappuccino which is entirely milk based. Once you overheat milk past a certain point you scald it and it’s undrinkable. So, a long black being too hot is possible, but a cappuccino (and still able to drink) not so much. Mind you, not calling US McDonalds coffee long black as such, last I had it not sure what the hell it is, some vile substance potentially that’s had coffee murdered at some point early in the process, but yes, entirely possible that it could be too hot (and still as undrinkable as it us but too hot🤣).

Stalkedbyzombies · 11/06/2023 15:51

Right, I'm odd to dig out the bottle of Camps 😊

rightioly · 11/06/2023 15:24

I don't think it was ever argued that it was fine for her to hold it like that. But the damage would have been far less if mcdonalds had made their coffee properly. It was far hotter than any other coffee they tested.

Yes.

It wasn't a sensible move to hold it in place between her legs. But the point of her case was that if the coffee had been Starbucks temperature (for example) then she would not have been so badly burned. She suffered horrific scalding simply because McDonalds chooses to make its coffee at least 20 degrees hotter than everyone else despite the fact that hundreds of its customers have been very badly burned.

Tessabelle74 · 11/06/2023 15:52

You think there's a way she can make a coffee hotter just for you? 🤣

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 13:55

I actually feel a bit shaky from it. Like I can't eat my sandwich now due to a sore tongue. I've never had that before and I'm 45!

Goodness, sounds serious. Who are you calling first, a counsellor, a lawyer or emergency services?

BodyMorphi · 11/06/2023 15:55

. This is like Maccy ds putting a warning on their Apple pies.

To be fair, (although its decades since I had one) the content of McDonalds Apple pies was actually hotter than the sun. It was like molten larva.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 13:40

A cup of coffee being hot? Wow I’m shocked!

Not just hot. Scalding. And I drink plenty of coffees believe me!

Yes. She has taken a dislike to you, it happens. Don't go back/give a bad review/tell your friends

Molten larva would be quite something. Albeit cruel.

The internal temperature of a McDonald’s pie is incredible. The warning needs to be more of the ‘danger of death’ kind than a mild warning that it might be hot.

oakleaffy · 11/06/2023 15:59

@Rollonannualeave I have taken coffees back several times over the last few years for being tepid or weak- you should have done the same!

Also ask to be served at the same time as your son.

TwoFluffyDogsOnMyBed · 11/06/2023 15:59

I think that of you think this woman has taken a dislike to you then you’re probably right. As someone who was mercilessly bullied all through school and constantly told by my mother that I was being paranoid, these replies aren’t nice to read.

The thing I find is that most people are lovely and then every few months, just when I least expect it, some twat comes along and ruins my day. I put my guard up for a while and then just when I’ve relaxed it happens again! She’s probably like that with a lot of people. Perhaps she’s jealous of you in some way. Perhaps she’s got an awful life and saw you having a lovely day. Don’t put yourself through it again though.

RachelGreeneGreep · 11/06/2023 16:00

I had a situation with a shop assistant in a local shop who obviously believed I had done something terrible to her in a previous life. She was always really rude to me and would fawn over others.

I stopped going there. She doesn't work there anymore now, I discovered recently.

YellowHatt · 11/06/2023 16:07

Drinking drinks that are overly hot can cause people issues down the line too.
What do you mean @SapphireSeptember ?

oakleaffy · 11/06/2023 16:08

@Rollonannualeave I was given repeated bad service and terrible cake slice size at a stall in a park.

I complained as soon as it was given to me ''That's not a slice, that's a sliver!'' {Pictured} it was about 1 cm thick and missing parts.

I'd paid beforehand- and had even ASKED as to what the size would be to be shown a generous size by the person's hand.

I complained and just don't go back there- and left a bad review as they argued back once when I'd paid for ''cheese snacks ham toastie'' and only got cheese- and the bloke was pulling my toastie apart with bare hands trying to insert a slice of cold , wet, ham.

We call the coffee stall the ''shit shack'' and just don't go there any more.

Hygiene is questionable- I've seen staff bite their nails, run their hands through their hair and then make sandwiches-

Tongs would help! or catering gloves.

To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?
LaurieFairyCake · 11/06/2023 16:12

I think it's really obvious she doesn't like you Flowers

Unless you've had it happen to you then you don't notice

Go with your gut and take your money elsewhere

Swrigh1234 · 11/06/2023 16:13

Did you ask for a Frappuccino?

With an open top, hot drinks cool down pretty fast so they’re not going to make them warm to begin with else they’ll be cold by the time they get to the customer.

I tend to start drinking it straight away, Ive only been burnt once and that was when I ordered a hot chocolate from a food van, I’ve never had any issues with coffee and never really needed to sip it either, it must have been far too hot to have burnt her.

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 16:21

I'm doubly pissed off as I would normally be sitting in the garden with a nice afternoon cup of tea. But I can't. Because burned mouth.

I have messaged them and they've got back to me with "apologies. Thanks for the feedback. We will look into it." what's the bet that's the last time I will hear from them.

Of course the coffee is going to be hot.

The reason you have cooler coffees in other places is probably because it has cooled down by the time it gets to you.

If your coffee came out cold then you would have every right to complain/ask for a new one.

You cannot complain that a hot coffee is hot because that’s how it’s meant to be.
Its like complaining an ice pole is cold.

It sounds as though you think this woman has an issue with you so you are trying to find anything to complain about.

Nope. A cappuccino is not 'supposed' to be scalding hot.

Using milk that's too hot to make coffee is the #1 best way to get shit coffee.

TBH this thread is explaining why British coffee, in the main, remains so resolutely shit.
