To think she made the coffee too hot on purpose?

Just need some perspective as I nearly complained but then didn't want to be "that person" especially in front of my son. I've just been on a long walk with dogs and son, all lovely and we ended up in a little coffee shop that also sells plants and groceries.

I've been in once before and whenever I go, the lady that works there ways seems to look me up and down in a judgemental way. I thought I was imagining it so went again today.

I ordered a cappacino for me and lemonade for my son. We got the lemmondae instantly but then I had to wait about 10 to 15 minutes for my coffee. She literally served everyone else before me (even the people that came afterwards). My son had finished his lemondade. When I finally received my coffee it was scalding hot and I burned my tongue. I had to wait another 10 minutes for it to cool down. AIBU to think she has something against me for no reason? I've never been rude to her and don't know her. Or am I being paranoid?

You'd been in there once before but think the woman would recognise you? I doubt it, unless you're unusual/unique looking. Why didn't you ask where your coffee was, instead of letting her serve other people before you'd got yours?

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 17:31

Well if you live in the UK and have dragged your dogs out on a "long walk" on a day like this maybe she's just giving you a taste of your own medicine?

Chill out it was a cool shaded forest walk and they had a big bowl of cool water halfway around

I do wonder as a pp said if she mistook me for someone else. I did overhear them slagging off someone else, saying something like "just wait until she comes here next time".

Yes, of course you did!

Rollonannualeave · 11/06/2023 17:35

@Billyho yes I did actually.

It is not complicated. Shitty service + shitty coffee= shitty review on social media platform(s).

The reasons behind all this are irrelevant- they run a cafe & they need custom. Do a bad job & they risk this response.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 11/06/2023 17:55

I used to have a member of staff who I found out was making drinks too hot as punishment for what she perceived as rude behaviour. I managed her out.

It’s quite obvious when it gets too hot when you heat milk up, it has a certain look, the foam doesn’t hold as well and it also smells. So it’s hard for it to be accidental.

Oh so nice waitress was in fact also bitchy waitress? TBH I think I’d go elsewhere? It’s not like you’re a regular and why give bitching and over heating coffee shop your business? 🤷‍♀️

I'm doubly pissed off as I would normally be sitting in the garden with a nice afternoon cup of tea. But I can't. Because burned mouth.

I have messaged them and they've got back to me with "apologies. Thanks for the feedback. We will look into it." what's the bet that's the last time I will hear from them.

What do you want them to do?

Jesus wept. If this is the worst thing that’s happened to you this year, it’s been a pretty good year.

Don’t go there again. And with the money saved you can book yourself a nice spa day.

Coffee shouldn't be scalding, but often is. There was a Mcdonald's case a few years ago where a woman was seriously scalded by a cup of Mcdonald's coffee. People make a joke of it, but she had the cup in her lap as she got herself organised in the car, the cup was insulated so she couldn't tell how hot the coffee was and when it spilt, she got third degree burns to her thighs and 'pelvic area' (wording from the court case). Third degree burns are the most serious, full-thickness burns. She was badly injured, and the burns were life-changing.

Ideally, coffee should be made with water that is just below boiling point. The milk should not be boiled - if it is, it tastes disgusting.

I doubt the woman was acting out of any personal dislike - it sounds like she hates her job and shouldn't be there. But the OP is right about the temperature of the coffee. It shouldn't be that hot.

Lawsuit aside, putting a cup of any warm drink in your lap isn't the smartest move. But personal responsibilty seems to be absent these days. 🤷‍♀️

Shaky
Sandwich
Can’t drink a cup of tea

Maybe time for a trip to urgent care?

Never known such a dreadful mouth burn …… from a sip of coffee!!

Is it just me (a pig) who burns their tongue pretty much weekly?

Nope, not just you. See also roof of mouth.

Citrines · 11/06/2023 18:48

I always ask for coffee extra hot. What a fuss over nothing. Coffee shop staff can't win.

Confrontayshunme · 11/06/2023 13:39

YABU A cappucino should be hot, so I don't think that is her fault. If she was making all the drinks, as a barista, it is easier to take several orders then do a bunch of coffees at once. Maybe she has RBF. I wouldn't give it too much thought.

Cappucino's shouldn't be scalding hot. They're supposed to be a drinkable temperature when they're served.

Inkypot · 11/06/2023 14:18

@Rollonannualeave people are being blimmin' horrible to you on here and I'm not sure why.
Maybe they're all grouchy baristas themselves 🤷‍♀️
Yes you absolutely should highlight it to the business owner. It's not ok that you've been left in pain and discomfort from what was a simple trip to a coffee shop with your child.
People can make light of it all they like but can guarantee if you'd said the coffee splashed on your child as it was slammed down, you'd be getting far more understanding responses.
It's impossible to say whether the woman does or doesn't have an issue with you, we can't really tell and unfortunately neither can you. But it does sound like she forgot the order and rushed it then slammed it down to make a point.
Hope you do forward your experience to the business themselves and that you receive a far more compassionate response than a lot of the arsey ones on here. For now try having an ice pole if you can. It'll soothe your burn and hydrate which is needed.

I agree with this. Serving coffee which actually burns someone’s mouth is not acceptable. It seems unlikely she has something against you personally though OP, so I would just chalk this up to an odd experience and forget about it.

Hmm, where did I say it was the worst thing that happened this year? Due to ongoing family illness of course it wasn't. That doesn't mean I can't post about it!

Yes because a spa day and a couple of coffees cost roughly the same 🙄

God alive OP. How dare you be pissed off about slow bad service and a badly made drink. Guessing you paid your actual money for the pleasure OP?

Can't believe the " oh you're making a fuss " types.

Spa Day ?! How much does a coffee cost round your parts?

Citrines · 11/06/2023 19:20

It's an outrage Starbucks are serving iced lattes. Will nobody think of those with sensitive teeth???

Yep they totally can.

A smile. Bring the order out at the same time. Don't boil the coffee.

Hot drink is hot. Hmmmm maybe order something iced next time
