To think webcams in homes are getting quite common?

Just that, really. We have a few to keep an eye on our dogs when we are out. Most of our friends also do. How many MNters have security webcams in their homes/gardens/drives?

AIBU: we have them
YANBU: we don't have any

None here

catgirl1976 · 11/06/2023 11:49

One in the back garden to keep an eye on the chickens but none in the house

Uppitywoman · 11/06/2023 11:50

Outside, yes. Inside, no.

AgnesX · 11/06/2023 11:50

Outside the front door only.

mintbiscuit · 11/06/2023 11:53

Fuck no. And I hope they never become normalised

IamSmarticus · 11/06/2023 11:54

I've got one inside - originaly to keep an eye on my cat during the day whilst he was on cage rest following an operation but once he recovered, we kept it in place.

stinkywiskers · 11/06/2023 11:55

What the hell?! No!

WhiteFire · 11/06/2023 11:55

No and no Ring (or equivalent) doorbell either.

Oysterbabe · 11/06/2023 11:56

We have a front door one and one in the lounge.

headcheffer · 11/06/2023 11:56

I have two, which can be moved around the house as needed. Usually one is in the bedroom to keep an eye on the baby who still sleeps in the crib by our bed. The other one is in the playroom to keep an eye on the toddler if I'm upstairs changing the baby or something.

rubyslippers · 11/06/2023 11:56

What?!
we have a camera doorbell but I can’t imagine anything as intrusive as a camera inside my home 🥴

Talipesmum · 11/06/2023 11:58

Ring doorbell out the front - but we don’t capture footage, it’s just a video doorbell. Nothing in the garden and definitely nothing in the house.

I find it odd that you’ve lumped together indoor and outdoor surveillance- outdoor is likely much more common but indoor is a totally different thing. Watching out for strangers vs watching out for people you trust enough to be in your house. I can see why you might if you are keeping an eye on dogs, but I’d be feeling v uneasy if I was a visiting human to your house and you had surveillance inside.

Weird voting options. If your title asks a question voting shpunt be the opposite, the poll is now meaningless. Yes you are obviously bring U as most people would think it super creepy to have indoor cameras. But you want people who think that to vote yanbu. And ring cameras are totally different although still not that common.

We do. It was originally cat cam but now only used when we go on holiday and the place is empty.

Friend has them installed in elderly parents house. She is their main carer and goes in a few times each day anyway. The cameras are not intrusive, top of stairs and in the hall. She doesn't "spy" on her parents, but she could see if they fell down the stairs etc. Or if they let someone in the front door. If she can see they are moving around and upright, she can plan her visits.

Skinnermarink · 11/06/2023 12:09

I’m a nanny and I absolutely wouldn’t work somewhere with cameras inside the home.

Thankfully, I haven’t yet come across anyone with them other than a video baby monitor.

Titsywoo · 11/06/2023 12:11

We have 3 outside and 1 inside but the inside one is only for when we have foster dogs to stay and need to go out. It is helpful to see how they react to being alone. We turn it off the rest of the time as it is weird to watch what everyone is doing.

WateryDoom · 11/06/2023 12:12

I don't know a single person with one. Or with a RING doorbell.
People round here just open the door if they are in. And don't if they aren't. We're in a village.

NewPinkJacket · 11/06/2023 12:15

I can't vote because I have one covering my driveway and garden but I would never want one in my home, and I don't think they're particularly common either.

All these cameras everywhere along with couples putting trackers on each other's phones, 'so they can put the kettle on' makes me feel uneasy.

Stalkedbyzombies · 11/06/2023 12:18

We have a few - but my DHs occupation requires a high level of security. You get used to it quickly. Don't forget that the moment you step outside, we have more surveillance cameras per km than anywhere else.

Thatladdo · 11/06/2023 12:19

8 External
Sereral Internal, Some network connected some not.

People dont realise how many cameras are actualy in their homes and around them.
Tablets, laptops, mobile phones all have cameras ( often multiple ) and these are generaly network connected and can be viewed remotely without your knowledge should a 3rd party decide they wanted to.

Showersugar · 11/06/2023 12:21

I have a camera in the room where the dog hangs out, but it's only switched on when we're going to be out any length of time. Visitors needn't worry.

WakeMeUpWhenGoodOmensIsBack · 11/06/2023 12:23

Your AIBU is the wrong way around.

DF got a couple when DM with dementia was alive so that he could see whether she'd got out of bed. Now she's dead he points them out of the window at the garden or uses them to keep
track of building work. They're useful for pets and (used with care) for keeping an eye on people with moderate dementia.

😆I remember the expression on the face a regular visitor when she suddenly caught sight of the camera in the living room! This would have been ten years ago so a long time before it was common. She never came back.

Osj · 11/06/2023 12:24

Got a couple of external cams, a ring doorbell and 2 internal ones.
