To think webcams in homes are getting quite common?

Just that, really. We have a few to keep an eye on our dogs when we are out. Most of our friends also do. How many MNters have security webcams in their homes/gardens/drives?

AIBU: we have them
YANBU: we don't have any

Used to have one for the dog but decided I'd rather not know what she's up to now 🤣

PurBal · 11/06/2023 12:25

We have a video baby monitor, does that count?

Trig5 · 11/06/2023 12:26

My job requires a high level of security, so I have them throughout my home and gardens. Most are quite hidden, so you wouldn't know they were there, unless you know what to look for.

8 External
Sereral Internal, Some network connected some not.

People dont realise how many cameras are actualy in their homes and around them.
Tablets, laptops, mobile phones all have cameras ( often multiple ) and these are generaly network connected and can be viewed remotely without your knowledge should a 3rd party decide they wanted to.

This is why I have tiny sliding covers on all my laptop cameras. Amazon sells packets of them for less than a fiver.

CoachBeardsJane · 11/06/2023 12:29

We have 3 inside and 1 outside. The ones inside were because my neighbour threatened to set our house on fire if he heard our dogs barking. So I panicked and got camera so I could tell them to shut up (and the police advised it) turns out our dogs don't bark, his neighbours does..

The dog cameras are only plugged in when we're not here and the one outside is on all the time

I occasionally pet sit & find I have to ask before taking on a job. I will not be filmed without my consent in a home. If you don't trust me, don't hire me in the first place. I tell them it's because I don't want to be seen eating as I'd feel embarrassed, but I really shouldn't have to & people should be more transparent about it.

Such an intrusion & invasion of privacy. I once babysat for some weirdos who had them everywhere. I had to stay in the study reading after the kids had gone to bed as I didn't wish to be filmed.

Olinguita · 11/06/2023 12:33

I really hope indoor surveillance doesn't become normalized...
I'm honestly struggling to think of situations in which I'd be ok with it.
To be honest we barely even used a monitor when DC was a baby because we live in a flat and I was able to hear him wherever I was in the home.

We now have two outdoor cameras as well as a ring video doorbell. Our car/van got broken into twice in the last year so thats why we decided to get some.

User15387534 · 11/06/2023 12:36

Ring doorbell and camera on the garage behind the caravan to see if anyone goes round the back

Hollyppp · 11/06/2023 12:38

We have two at front of the house (ring door bell and security camera of the whole close). I hate them, I know my husband watches my coming and goings every night before bed. It records all audio and video and saves it. Also the car has a dash cam that does the same so no probate conversations if you wanted one.

im just grateful there’s not one in the house. My friends husband set one up in their living room so he could check in on their children whenever he wanted. I feel like me and mama friends have to be really careful what we say and it can be a bit awkward feeding babies right in front of the camera

RosettaTheGardenFairy · 11/06/2023 12:39

We have quite a few of them; we live rurally with quite a bit of land so we have several dotted around the land at the back to keep and eye on things, then 2 covering the driveway, a couple over the entrances and 1 internal in the garage, 1 in the barn.

Bit daft since when we go out during the day we don't even lock our doors 😂

We don't have any internally in the living spaces though, I don't know what the benefit would be

TheSnowyOwl · 11/06/2023 12:40

They are very normal here. Usually on the front gates and security around the house have been typical for many years.

pussycatinfluffyslippers · 11/06/2023 12:40

None here, but neighbours have them - ring (or other) doorbell cam, cctv at front and back of their house, but covering my drive and some of the back garden.
I think out of 10 houses in our close, 4 don't have any cameras and the other 6 are paranoid. 😱🤣

MyFaceIsAnAONB · 11/06/2023 12:41

None in the house - have used in the kids’ rooms for short spells of terrible sleep etc so we could see what the situation is before going in etc. But that was a week or so at a time.

Camera doorbell, back garden and one in a bush to spy on the hedgehog!

Skinnermarink · 11/06/2023 12:47

My neighbour in our flats does have one because there was a peeping Tom, and she did manage to catch him peering through the windows at 2am trying to watch her sleep 🤢

Its still up but he hasn’t been back since she yelled at him but she left it up, now we get to enjoy footage of badgers 😀

Chickpea17 · 11/06/2023 12:52

Outside yes would hate them inside my house

cpphelp · 11/06/2023 12:52

Used to have one when we had a dog and first had a dog walker

Littledogball · 11/06/2023 12:53

Which ones are best for pets? Any recommendations?

ToneDeath · 11/06/2023 12:53

I came here to say no, but I’ve just remembered that I do. Duh. Have a short range v tech baby monitor camera. It’s mounted to the wall above baby cot.

stargirl1701 · 11/06/2023 12:55

No, we have none.

PILs have some outside which seem to bring them comfort.

AndrexPuppy · 11/06/2023 12:56

External security cameras x3. 2 internal cameras to keep an eye on the dog that aren’t connected but we haven’t taken down.

Oldraver · 11/06/2023 12:59

I have two cat cams, we do forget they are there and have been caught out a few times prancing in the buff

gogohmm · 11/06/2023 13:00

No, as far I'm aware i don't know anyone with one apart from my dad who has one in the bluetits nest box

countvoncount · 11/06/2023 13:00

Yes. Ring doorbell out front, 2 internal, one on upstairs landing one in lounge area.
Don't bother me in the slightest, I'm nowhere near interesting enough to be doing or saying anything top secret

CoreyTaylorsSoggyTshirt · 11/06/2023 13:01

DD has one in her room, she has lots of issues and has been home schooled for over a year, she has went back to school, very part time, so I bought her one so she can keep an eye/talk to her pets while she is out of the house, although it doesn't help with her medical issues, it eases her anxiety (although it's a bit weird hearing her chat to her spiders, rats and other insects she has while she's on break at school). It's pretty cool, it revolves 360 so she has her room set up in such a way she can easily see them all by rotating it.

I wouldn't have one for any other reason.
