To think webcams in homes are getting quite common?

Just that, really. We have a few to keep an eye on our dogs when we are out. Most of our friends also do. How many MNters have security webcams in their homes/gardens/drives?

AIBU: we have them
YANBU: we don't have any

Yes I do. To keep an eye on my dogs. I have two in my garden, because it's an L shape and someone broke in last year twice via the back garden. I have one on the side of my house and one at the front.
It's standard where I live.

frogssnailandpuppydogtails · 14/06/2023 19:22

We have one at the front of house and a dog cam .

Applecoresweet · 14/06/2023 19:24

I didn't even know this was a thing.

It's creepy AF.

I’m a nanny and I absolutely wouldn’t work somewhere with cameras inside the home.

Thankfully, I haven’t yet come across anyone with them other than a video baby monitor.

The family I nannied for had cameras inside the home. Absolutely dreadful! I wasn't told about it either 😫

Ugh that is grim! I write it into my contract now that I will not be monitored via camera during my working day.

We have two at front of the house (ring door bell and security camera of the whole close). I hate them, I know my husband watches my coming and goings every night before bed. It records all audio and video and saves it. Also the car has a dash cam that does the same so no probate conversations if you wanted one.

im just grateful there’s not one in the house. My friends husband set one up in their living room so he could check in on their children whenever he wanted. I feel like me and mama friends have to be really careful what we say and it can be a bit awkward feeding babies right in front of the camera

Why do you put up with this? It’s your own home!

I don’t really know how to argue with it if he says it’s for our own benefit/ our own safety? He has massive anxiety

Alsonification · 14/06/2023 20:03

I have one in my room cos that's where I have the cots for the children I mind so I can keep an eye when they're having a nap.

I'm a bit paranoid of it though so as soon as I've finished work I throw a towel over it GrinGrin

TheCyclingGorilla · 14/06/2023 20:05

We don't have any. Nothing to steal but the cat, and she'd put up a damn good fight!

I can understand it if you have heirlooms, antiques, a valuable pet, but otherwise I can't see the point.

VestaTilley · 14/06/2023 20:05

It’s a batshit idea, why on Earth do people do it?? Monitoring pet dogs aside.

KnutonHardz · 14/06/2023 20:14

Having cameras for safety and security reasons is a lot more common and affordable. I'm living back home for a while now with my father who is poorly. I've installed both a security system, and some cameras, because while we live on a farm we're not too far away from a town, and have had numerous instances of trespassing and attempted theft in recent months.

He also has a camera in his bedroom, and in his study. He's fairly tech savy, and uses that for video calls with me and his grand children. He didn't want anything in the kitchen though.

I do understand the potential creepy use of such tech too. However, it's been in invaluable in solving many high profile crimes in recent times.

FinanceLPlates · 14/06/2023 20:17

@Hollyppp Say you hate it and it makes you feel uncomfortable in your own home. This is sufficient grounds for not having one. If your husband argues back say you’re sure he wouldn’t want to cause you distress, would he?

Ineedsleepandcoffee · 14/06/2023 20:22

We have one because they are cheaper than baby monitors and my young child has epilepsy. It is put to sleep during the day

rainbowrings · 14/06/2023 20:43

I have a couple but I do turn them off if I have guests that I know because don't want them to feel uncomfortable

So guests that you don't know - are they prewarned?

Wyndam · 14/06/2023 21:05

Amazon are really good at mapping shopping habits just from web activity. I wonder what they can do with millions of live feed cameras all over the world. There's already reports of Amazon locking people of their installed smart home system because the camera misheard racist remarks. Systems shouldn't be able to make those decisions.

I'm aware I sound a bit tin foil hat-like but I don't care. It's not family members I worried about watching. It's the surveillance system itself.

Exactly. I think that’s abuse

saltinesandcoffeecups · 14/06/2023 21:40

We have the Alexa with video so not recording continuously. We’ve also had a cat cam set up when I had one that was being segregated for a surgery recovery and we were out of town with our neighbors looking after them.

I bought it so the neighbors could keep an eye on the little bugger without having to actually come over.

With the Alexa I did warn our pet sitter that we have them and we do ‘drop in’ from time to time while away from home. I told her if she wasn’t keen on it she could block it while she was in the house.

The cat cam was decommissioned when the pain in the ass stopped pulling stitches

saraclara · 14/06/2023 22:21

I hate them, and hate that they're becoming normalised.

It's all very well people saying "oh I never look at the recording", but someone close to me has one and her husband can watch it from work.
It came with the house (the previous owners left all the cameras in place, including the laptop in a cupboard that controls them), and basically the person close to me hadn't bothered disconnecting them 'as they'd be useful if we got broken in to'.

I'm reasonably confident that they really don't bother with them much, but they're blase enough not to give them much thought, so I very much doubt that they take the trouble to switch them off when they have guests.

I'm a private person, and I don't want my conversations listened to by someone they're not intended for, or to be recorded absent mindedly picking my nose or adjusting my pants.

Ring doorbells if you must, but, internal cameras, nope.

OnTheBoardwalk · 14/06/2023 22:41

A house on my road got robbed and targeted for their car this week. White paint on the tyre then robbed that night

my ring cam and others on the street lost connection earlier that day with no notification due to them disabling the Wi-Fi connection

my wired nest cat cam was unaffected. Think I’ll be keeping both

Ambi · 15/06/2023 06:56

All this why do people have cameras? We were broken into 4 times at our last home, very average 3 bed detached. We stepped up security the last 2 times and they couldn't get in but we could watch their attempt on the cameras. No, they didn't get caught but we knew it was a targeted attack by 4 lads in tracksuits, we could see their getaway car.

AmazingBouncingFerret · 15/06/2023 07:04

When your home is smashed into and you’re held at knifepoint whilst being robbed, you’re going to have cameras to give any sort of resemblance of security and peace of mind.

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 15/06/2023 07:08

One outside monitoring main access point but no way would I allow cameras watching my every move indoors.

jannier · 15/06/2023 07:10

TheHandmaiden · 14/06/2023 18:19

@jannier - yes this is common along with phone tracking.

Women are persuaded to get pet cams or for security. Many of them do not realise that these are used to track them, and their activity.

Yes that's exactly what he did
