To think webcams in homes are getting quite common?

Just that, really. We have a few to keep an eye on our dogs when we are out. Most of our friends also do. How many MNters have security webcams in their homes/gardens/drives?

AIBU: we have them
YANBU: we don't have any

Considering all the Alexa shows have cameras I reckon more people in a way have at least live viewing cctv than they realise.

anyway we have cameras outside, a ring doorbell, two shows and a inside camera.

Anyone who has an Alexa at all even a non show can drop into voice conversations and listen in too. Something I reckon again people don’t realise.

SenseFromThoughtDivide · 11/06/2023 13:11

We have one at the bottom of the stairs that’s turned on by geofencing when we leave the house, we chose the bottom of the stairs as it’s the choke point for anyone moving between rooms

grosslyunfair · 11/06/2023 13:20

I viewed a house recently. I turned up early and was waiting in car outside and the owner came to say he'd seen me in the car on their camera and did I want to come in. During conversation it was clear they watched back film of people viewing and their conversations. I'm planning to buy the house but the first thing I will do is check they are all gone!

I get it- I had them for my dog too but this felt OTT!

AndDoTheTangoInTheNightTAAAAAANGOOO · 11/06/2023 13:21

We have none but our neighbours have them at the front and in their rear garden. The rear garden ones make me feel uncomfortable as I'm sure they capture part of our garden and I'm not sure if they also record sound. If they do the camera is positioned above where our patio is and where we sit chatting (houses are detached but there isnt a massive gap between us). I've just been sat out there now and found myself looking up at it wondering if I was being recorded. Just annoying.

I would feel a bit weird if people I visited had internal cameras, my in-laws have cameras that point at their patio where we often sit when we visit, even this makes me feel a bit like I'm being watched. I know they have sound on theirs so if ever we are round there I need to remember not to bitch to my husband when they are inside the house 😆. My fil is the sort of person who would watch the footage back too.

Azaeleasinbloom · 11/06/2023 13:27

Outside only, because there have been a few car thefts in the area and because one of my neighbours has a habit of climbing over the wall - god only knows why, but he now knows that we know and don’t tolerate it.

AndrexPuppy · 11/06/2023 13:36

You can map the range of most of them. So if you are worried, have a chat with your neighbour and ask them to make sure that the viewing and recording range is within their property boundaries and doesn’t encroach on yours.

bellissimiaow · 11/06/2023 13:37

I'm a pet sitter and it's very common for clients to have internal cameras to check on their pets. Some mention them and assure us that they're simply to check on the pet and not me, others dont. At first it bothered me but then I decided that, from the clients point of view, they're allowing me access to their home completely unattended so why shouldn't they be able to view me while I'm there? I'm a professional and I've not got anything to hide. I tend to assume that most homes DO have one and just conduct myself accordingly at all times regardless.
Other than for checking on pets or babies though, I'm not sure why else anyone would need an internal camera? I sometimes put one up at home if we're away (for the cats) but not if there's any family members at home.

YoDood · 11/06/2023 13:48

My friend has cameras in her main living area, ostensibly for keeping an eye on her dog. I hate them; it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable.

It should be understood that you should switch them off when you have company, even if you do want to film your own dogs/family. That or you expressly seek their consent.

Doorbell cameras I can live with.

gettingoldisshit · 11/06/2023 13:48

No!! It's creepy and weird!

adularia · 11/06/2023 13:49

We don’t have one, or a ring doorbell (or an Alexa etc) and I don’t know anyone who does. I hope those with cameras in their homes make visitors aware of this.

PrtScn · 11/06/2023 13:51

Nothing inside (unless you count the baby monitor), but 1 external facing the driveway and a ring doorbell. Proved useful last night when a drunk man decided to kick the shit out of all the cars. A couple of other neighbours have doorbells, and at least 1 has an external camera. Definitely more common to see over the couple of years

Mine has a privacy zone so I have blacked out anything that isn't on my property. If you're on friendly terms with your neighbour maybe ask them to show you theirs. Mine has sound but my neighbours are across the street so it's too far away to pick up anything.

megletthesecond · 11/06/2023 14:01

Outdoor Ring only here.

QueefQueen80s · 11/06/2023 14:17

Facing outside yes but none inside.

OnTheBoardwalk · 11/06/2023 14:26

Another one with a cat cam for when I’m out of the house. It points to the front door and hall as well so I can check I’ve shut the front door (I always have)

i forget it’s there most of the time but always tell visitors and turn it off when they call

exhaustedlongtime · 11/06/2023 14:34

My cousin put one in my grandmas home (her home too) and I don't even want to go round anymore because she can tune into our conversations and grandma refuses to turn it off.

littleripper · 11/06/2023 14:37

Outside yes, inside is incredibly weird and creepy imo. I used to work in peoples homes but got my own facilities when these started appearing. I do not understand why people think it is ok to film their kids/cleaner/relatives etc without consent.

CottagePieLaLaLa · 12/06/2023 11:24

Our indoor ones are purely to keep an eye on the dogs. Our friends and visitors know and are not bothered, possibly because most of them also have cameras indoors to watch their pets. If we are away and someone is staying here, we NEVER look because I find that creepy myself!

OhBling · 12/06/2023 11:28

I think a lot of people do. I really don't like it. I don't mind the ring doorbells - I can see those as I approach a door and even if they record me when I go past, I think that's just an extension of CCTV. But I hate that I could be recorded in people's homes without realising it.

We're watering our neighbour's garden this week. They are the type to have a camera in the house. I have absolutely no intention of doing anything other than going in, watering, picking their ripe fruit/veg (as per their request) and leaving. But I feel uncomfortable as I suspect there is a camera and every time I go in they might be watching/alerted. It feels like I'm being checked on.

KitchenSinkLlama · 12/06/2023 11:39

We have a wireless ring camera that only comes out when we go out (to keep an eye on the dog) or when we go on holiday. It works with the ring doorbell and our alarm system.

When we are at home it sits in a cupboard.

aperolspritzbasicbitch · 12/06/2023 11:44

Ring doorbell, ring floodlight camera covering the drive and garage, and a ring plug in camera in the dining room to be able to see what the dog is up to.
Used to turn it off when not in use, but it would lose network connection so now we just turn it round 🤣

DifferentRoundHere · 12/06/2023 11:46

We have them but they only see parts of our outside space and one room that the dogs are put in when we leave them (not often because there’s usually someone in our house)

Chemenger · 12/06/2023 11:47

We have an inside one, which is on when we are not there. It was very useful when we were burgled; the police recognised the thieves from the recording and they were caught very quickly. It was just unfortunate that we were in a different time zone, asleep, when it happened or they might have been caught in the house.

StrawberryWater · 12/06/2023 11:50

Ring doorbell but none internally and I would find it creepy if there were any.

When we go on holiday we have good old fashioned internal sensors linked to our phone that will alert us to anyone breaking in.
