To think webcams in homes are getting quite common?

Just that, really. We have a few to keep an eye on our dogs when we are out. Most of our friends also do. How many MNters have security webcams in their homes/gardens/drives?

AIBU: we have them
YANBU: we don't have any

We have a ring doorbell and CCTV cameras outside.

We have an Echo Show inside. We didn’t buy it for the security camera feature but it’s been a useful feature when checking in on feline fuckery when we’re out.

I've got one that I plug in in the kitchen if I'm out for the day without the dog. Teens laughed at me as it's mostly so dog isn't lonely and I can say hi every now and again Blush, as she's well behaved but not alone often. Put it away the rest of the time.

Have a door/drive one too.

AmeliaWarnerBros · 12/06/2023 11:56

Again, I hate indoor cameras & not a fan of outdoor ones but they are good for security in general.

As with another poster, I agree that things that happen in public can be proven if others don't believe you/you need to id someone: a weird male teen once ran after 2 of us, chanting & spraying perfume or something. It was v odd. He was v strange- possibly just a bit simple- but sinister all the same. We were freaked out, but it was all captured on a ring doorbell.

CottagePieLaLaLa · 14/06/2023 14:23

Indeed. I remember a TV programme last year saying that a property with visible cameras (or signs saying that there are cameras on the property) is less likely to attract burglars than a property that has no cameras.

I was going to start a thread on this! DD(11) went to a friends house yesterday and said it was really creepy because there are cameras up so her dad can see what is going on. Friend is 11 and younger brother is 9; kids go home from school for lunch (the girl cooks); twice a week there is no afternoon school so the kids are home alone, but "supervised". I was wondering how common it is.

Lcb123 · 14/06/2023 15:00

No definitely not. That’s the creepiest thing ever.

Lcb123 · 14/06/2023 15:01

If a friend or family member had active indoor cameras I’d refuse to visit them.

LisaD1 · 14/06/2023 15:11

Ring door bell at the front, different style at the back and one inside the family room. It’s only ever in if we are out or away. If we are out it’s to keep an eye on the dogs and if we are away as an extra security layer. Never on when we are home.

CottagePieLaLaLa · 14/06/2023 17:28

Can I ask: those of you who object to visiting friends/families with indoor cameras. Why is that? Is it because you don't want to be recorded? Because I think most people don't record - at least we don't.

I just worry about hacking.

I have camera covers on my laptops and tablets.

WomblingTree86 · 14/06/2023 17:39

No. I suspect many of them can be hacked especially if more than a couple of years old.

Lostinplaces · 14/06/2023 17:40

We have ring door bell but that’s it.

JewelTheft · 14/06/2023 17:42

One external one because we've had two attempted break ins. None inside.

KevinDeBrioche · 14/06/2023 17:52

No. Also think it’s weird, paranoid and creepy

Ambi · 14/06/2023 17:54

A video doorbell, some garden sensors (no camera) and ill be getting a Tesla with sentry mode.

AliceInTheMoon · 14/06/2023 17:57

I have 2, but only switch them on when I'm out as a dog cam. They're in the cupboard any other time.
I do have a Ring Doorbell and a camera outside the back door.

moreteensthansense · 14/06/2023 17:57

My daughter’s best friend’s parents have them ‘because teenagers lie’. I was a bit speechless when he (dad) told me that

TheHandmaiden · 14/06/2023 18:01

It's a creeps charter to have them in your home. Controlling people have them.

FussyPud · 14/06/2023 18:05

None here, the cats are outside during the day, don’t have a dog, so there’s nothing to look at - other than the laundry pile.

A friend has one for her dog, she checks on him on her break, and nips home if she needs to. She lives alone with the dog though, so is only spying on her own stuff.

We have a front door one and one in the lounge.

And visitors know about the lounge one?

A parent I worked with did so he could control his family. Initially said for security but would use it to question where his partner went, why they were on phone etc.

YnysMonCrone · 14/06/2023 18:12

I have a ring doorbell and a camera covering the patio doors. It's on advice of the DV team as I've got an injunction against my exh coming near the house and it provides evidence. It worked last October- lovely clear video of him merrily walking up the oath and ringing the bell. Bloody fool- back to prison.

I wouldn't have them normally but they give me peace of mind for now.

YnysMonCrone · 14/06/2023 18:13

Path not oath ffs

TheHandmaiden · 14/06/2023 18:19

@jannier - yes this is common along with phone tracking.

Women are persuaded to get pet cams or for security. Many of them do not realise that these are used to track them, and their activity.

CheeseandTrees · 14/06/2023 19:01

None here. It would be interesting to see what the cats get up to on the odd day neither of us are home but I suspect they just sleep and the thought of cameras in my house creeps me out.
