To feel pissed off that everyone is spelling my new baby’s name wrong?

Algor1thm · 10/06/2023 19:44

We’ve named our new baby a name which has several legitimate and well used spellings. The spelling we’ve gone with is actually the original spelling, but is the second most popular spelling in use in the UK currently. Think Isabelle versus Isabel for example. It’s not a made up or unknown spelling, and is completely phonetic. The name itself isn’t particularly unusual.

Almost everyone is already spelling the baby’s name wrong - over half of our new baby cards are spelt wrong. I’ve literally texted people “meet baby ‘Isabelle’” and right below they’ve written something like “congratulations, ‘Isabel’ is beautiful” etc.

I knew the spelling would be an issue going forward but I sort of expected people might be able to read what I’d written and spell it right the moment they were told the name. It’s probably just my hormones, but AIBU to think it’s quite rude not to make the effort to spell the baby’s name correctly in the new baby card?

My daughter is Sarah and often gets Sara. It's just one of those things, when you choose a name that can be spelled multiple ways.

RedRiverSun · 10/06/2023 21:20

2 of my aunts routinely get my name wrong and always have done. I'm 40! They did and do love me to pieces. Make like Elsa OP and let it go.

whiskyinthejaro · 10/06/2023 21:21

I have a first name that's spelt two ways, but the other way is slightly more common, especially in my age group. What boils my pee is like when you say, you text, email your name in a communication....And they reply with the the one that isn't what you just wrote! It's not ruined my life or anything so don't worry too much, those close to you will hopefully soon catch on to the correct version! I think a lot of people have a slight name issue, like one of my friends always has to point out he doesn't have an e on the end of his surname, and my husband often has to tell people to use his nickname instead of his formal sounding first name x

Bayleaf25 · 10/06/2023 21:21

I have a name that can either be ie ending or y ending and it happens on a daily basis. Think Tillie or Tilly, Millie or Milly (for example) I’m afraid it just happens, I don’t hold it against people.

Xmasbaby11 · 10/06/2023 21:24

It will happen. Misspellings are common whether it’s a popular name with variations or unknown name. People don’t pay a lot of attention. You can only get used to it! And correct those close to you, of course, but don’t take it personally when there are mistakes.

Elvis1956 · 10/06/2023 21:11

It's your fault. If you pick a name you expect to be incorrectly spelt....change it or put up with correcting people

It’s our favourite name and the only one we could agree on. We’ve used the original spelling of a classic name - the spelling that is now used slightly more commonly is a modern Americanised version invented relatively recently and popularised by a film. The spelling we’ve used is hundreds of years old - It’s not like we’ve gone for a bizarre spelling. It seems unreasonable to suggest that no one ever uses the name again, or else they should just use the invented spelling because people can’t pay attention to detail.

I have a close friend called Philippa. It took me years to remember it was one ‘l’ and two ‘p’s. She used to get offended that people got it wrong and I felt bad that even I used to get it mixed up. I have also got a friend called Ceri Ann. I can never remember if it’s Ann or Anne and I have to check through texts to be sure. I bet she gets loads of people misspelling Ceri too.

I don’t think it’s rude, just a bit thoughtless but easily done.

BeefyWellington · 10/06/2023 21:26

God, I would NEVER do that. I always check and double check the spelling of a name if I'm not sure.

People who don't capitalize names really annoy me. It's so lazy.

thebestbirtheraccordingtoDD · 10/06/2023 21:26

I have an unusual first name but very common surname. In emails I get addressed as my surname. Baffles me and you can mistake my first name for a surname and swapping them turns me into a bloke

Verbena17 · 10/06/2023 21:26

YANBU - My own name can be spelt 2 ways and my parents chose the less popular way. Even my own Aunty spells it wrong/can’t be arsed to spell it right.
It really annoys me.

Itshandled · 10/06/2023 21:28

My husband’s friend has a name ending in ‘y’, our nephew has the ‘ie’ version of the same number. If specifically asked how to spell our nephew’s name he’d say the ‘ie’ version, but he often writes it wrongly because his go to is the first version he knew. It’s irritating, but it really isn’t malicious or him saying he doesn’t care about our nephew.

Name* not number

pontipinemum · 10/06/2023 21:34

My name has a few ways to spell it. It is spelt incorrectly all the time. It doesn't bother me, apart from in work emails. It's there in my email address and signature. When emailing people with very unusual (to me) names I copy and paste their name.

Ohh, I’m intrigued now. I did wonder if it was Tabatha (rather than Tabitha) but I think that was a television programme before it was a film!

YANBU though. It would be different if you’d made up your own spelling of a popular name, but you’d think if it’s a name with several popular spellings that they’d check which one you’d used.

Tophy124 · 10/06/2023 21:36

I can’t think of any traditional names that have a more modern ‘Americanized’ spelling.

Gettingbysomehow · 10/06/2023 21:36

I'm in my 60s. My name ends in a and everyone ends it with e all my life. It drives me mad!!!
I have a name badge on and people still end it with e. When someone does that I just say who is that? Or thats not my name. Then they just stare blankly at me. Argghhhhhhh.

Tophy124 · 10/06/2023 21:37

I also find it hilarious that op says the other spelling is modern and ‘new’ and yet that seems to be the normal one everyone is using.

MimiSunshine · 10/06/2023 21:38

My name has many spellings. Mine is one of the least common but still absolutely known and recognised.
i just learnt to live with the miss spellings and only ever correct it when it’s important it’s spelt right.

however YANBU that people should have double checked before responding, that’s just lazy

swedishgirl · 10/06/2023 21:38

YANBU. I have one of those names (first name and surname actually) and so does my son. I'm so used to it now. It only bothers me when family members do it. My brother and SIL still spell my DSs name wrong in texts, despite me always sending a message back with correct spelling. I'll be honest, it really frustrates me.

ThomasinaLivesHere · 10/06/2023 21:39

It’s annoying that people can’t pay attention to detail but this is the world we live in. It’s something everyone choosing such names should recognise. I also don’t think anyone’s saying you can’t use names that are often misspelled just that you have to accept it will happen if you choose such a name.

Crashtestdumdum · 10/06/2023 21:39

Is it Elinor? My mum was so upset that we spelt DDs name wrong, as if we were trying to be modern and different

She shut up when I told her it is a very old spelling and in a famous novel.

I find it rude that people don’t make an effort to at least spell a baby’s name right when writing a card. Seems like basic manners

marblesthecat · 10/06/2023 21:39

My name has a few spellings as well and I even get work colleagues starting emails with (not my real name) "Hi Lindsay" when they can literally see in my email address above that it's Lynsey. I don't know what the answer is.

Housenoob · 10/06/2023 21:40

Tell us the name plz

QuickWash · 10/06/2023 21:40

Algor1thm · 10/06/2023 20:04

Thanks for the mix of responses. I’m sure hormones aren’t helping - and when you spend 9 months deciding on your perfect name it feels special I guess. But I do realise it’s only special to me not other people.

The several spellings did almost put us off, but it was the only name we could both agree on and in the end we decided we love it so much that we wanted to use it regardless. I anticipated it being spelt wrong by strangers and acquaintances but one of the people who spelt it wrong in a card was my father in law! I haven’t been correcting people because it feels rude, but I also can’t really have my child’s own grandparent spelling their name wrong going forward!

My MIL wrote dc1 name wrong in a Bible for her christening!

I've one DC with a name like this - a few legitimate ways of writing and shortening it and we do get all sorts. BUT, the other DC get their names spelt wrongly/shortened without asking etc almost as much and they both have very standardised names.

I'm not sure you can completely avoid it really.

(Fwiw my mum has spelt the dog's name wrong for her entire existence despite there being lots of places to see the name written - lead hook, bowl, collar tag etc. She's just decided and that's that!)

Tophy124 · 10/06/2023 21:40

Is it Margo/Margot? And you spelled it Margeux?
