To think FSID shouldn't be promoting the use of dummies?

here

I think the advice is based on very loose research evidence and they are wrong to suggest your child is unsafe if you do not use one.

Have tried to read all of this thread but bit low on time, but I know the dummy advice and lower cot death risk has been around for a long time, and I believe it is pretty sound. It's to do with the sucking reflex. But it shouldn't be another rule for mothers to follow. There are more complex issues surrounding SIDS than have ever been investigated. The one thing I am sure of is that I deplore continued attempts to blame mothers for the tragedies by either not doing "the right thing"" or the horror of accusing them of MSBP. I have known exhausted mothers racked with guilt because their babies simply would not sleep on their backs and yet they tried and tried to do the right thing when the simplest thing would have been to put them on their fronts. I gather some people have been really upset by things that have been said so have no wish to be insensitive.

I had a baby who used a dummy and two who didn't. All babes are different and I simply didn't and don't care about the dummy-scoffers, and I don't think anyone should. My dummy-using child was curious and alert and is now talkative with no oral problems and great teeth. (it's my thumbsuckers who need braces!)

"I suspect that we (as a society) are going to have to really change the way we think about little babies and sleep.

eg:

  • "sleeping through" as a major parenting goal - can we be sure this isn't putting babies at risk?
  • breastfeeding to sleep - maybe this is a good and protective thing to do (as well as nice and snuggly) - not a sign of weakness and creating a rod for your own back as certain people keep telling us."

welliemum - I completely agree with you about these two points.

BumperliciousIsOneHotMother · 22/02/2008 09:08

DD was exclusively breastfed but at 8 mo is also an avid dummy user. I know she doesn't need it to fall asleep, but it certainly helps. Plus she is a light sleeper so when she falls asleep at the breast then I try and move her she starts rooting the wakes up crying. It's got to the point where I take her off there breast and slide a dummy straight into her mouth!

To be honest though, it took a long time for use to get bfing right and I am sure that the dummy played a part in that but I was under pressure from family, plus she had terrible gastric wind as a newborn and a dummy seemed to soothe it.

I must admit though I am terribly embarrassed by it, I think it is ugly and very few of my friends use them. DH tends to give it to her in the day at the first sign of whinginess but I try to get him not to, but I guess it is ok for me as I can just stick on the boob!

I know this doesn't add much to the original debate, but I just wanted to describe how I use it in conjunction with bfing, but also loathe that fact that she needs one.

In light of the FSIDS evidence though, it will be a while before I try and take it away from her.

I think there is a difference between not discouraging dummy use and actively encouraging it. I think the FSID's advice is more the former IMO.
Some babies just won't take a dummy.
Ds has had a dummy since he was 3 days old, as is a very sucky baby - he was sucking his fingers lots, and as an adult thumbsucker that is a habit I want to discourage.

Slightly off topic but I had an email from another mum who said that CONI, who provided her son's apnea monitor, advise not use baby sleeping bags until 6 months. Must admit this is the first I've heard of this, and ds has been using one since he was born and I don't intend to stop. Not sure why though (why the advice, not why I use a sleeping bag!).

Bouncingturtle · 22/02/2008 09:13

Bumper - yes ds is ex bf, and I've done the same, ds would continue sucking at my nipple after he was fully sated (swallowing had stopped).

kiskideesameanoldmother · 22/02/2008 09:15

Has it been mentioned yet that the FSIDS has had a long financial association with a dummy maker? they are also very unkeen to talk about the benefits of breastfeeding and cosleeping in preventing SIDS.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 22/02/2008 09:15

instead of 'cosleeping' I really should have said 'bedsharing'

Bouncingturtle - The equivalent SIDS association in Germany advises sleeping bags only, no blankets. I have always gone with this tbh. A properly-fitting sleeping bag is pwerfectly safe IMO. The hospital ds2 was born in gave each new baby a lovely quality sleeping bag with the hospital logo on They also advise roomsharing with the baby to a year, not 6 months. Dummies are not promoted.

I actually think the FSID advice is actively towards dummies, which worried me a lot until I had a good think about the way I parent and ds2 sleeps. I would say the advice is probably fair enough if you are not going to feed to sleep.

kiskidee, I'm not 100% happy about the MAM link either tbh, but I do fear that Marina is right on the necessity of corporate sponsorship to keep organisations' work going. I think the reluctance to talk about bf and SIDS stems from the fact that due to the shoddy state of bf support in the UK so many women end up with it not working out and it is thus a desperately sensitive issue for them.

kiskideesameanoldmother · 22/02/2008 10:04

FSIDS also had though i don't know if it still has a longstanding corporate relationship with Cow and Gate.

I find it disappointing too that while FSIDS has worked hard to popularise the benefits of dummy use as per scientific research. It has not at the same time done the same time even had a press release on the the benefits of bf and bedsharing. Not very even handed for a charity who are supposed to be supporting all parents, i think.

One HV who is also a BFC was at a workshop on SIDS by the FSIDS. The facilitator went to great lengths to promote dummy use for all babies and was openly critical to breastfeeding and bedsharing, referring to 'the breastfeeding lobby'. She was not very happy when this BFC pointed out the detrimental effects of dummy use to early breastfeeding.

I can see the point of not wanting to 'put out' some parents on this issue however, they are a charity which should address the needs of all parents fairly. By not acknowledging the benefits of bedsharing and bf, they have, by exclusion, created fear and worry in bf mothers that they are not giving their babies the 'benefits' of dummy use and as I have noticed in some of the posts below.

Another thing that the FSIDS has not pointed out is that there is I think there is research out there stating that after habitual use, if a dummy is not used, the risk of SIDS shot up for that particular night.

sorry about multiple postings, my rather eager toddler came to the computer and happened to press a certain key just when i was ready to post.

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 22/02/2008 11:32

I'd just like to meekly apologise again.
I was indeed in a shit ,mood which is ABSOLUTELY no excuse.
Sorry to ggg and anyone else I upset or offended. The things I typed came out a lot harsher than I meant, but I was still out of order.

Otherwise this thread has been a pretty interesting discussion.

Well done for apologising TDWP, I was quite surprised.

Hopefully Ggglimpopo will see this.
