To think FSID shouldn't be promoting the use of dummies?

here

I think the advice is based on very loose research evidence and they are wrong to suggest your child is unsafe if you do not use one.

No-one is judging you.

yurt1 · 21/02/2008 15:20

I am utterly shocked by this thread. Open mouthed.

You don''t even realise how utterly out of order you are do you TDWP?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 15:21

If the thread upset ggg why not just leave without a post about it.

She obviously wanted me/others to feel sorry for her. Why?

I think I have not done or said anything wrong here and these trends of overreacting and demonising are really annoying me.

Not just this thread, across the board, of course.

OP posts:
SheikYerbouti · 21/02/2008 15:22

Please, just think before you press that post button, TDWP.

ConnorTraceptive · 21/02/2008 15:22

I'm genuinely confused by your objection to the advice. Is it just because you feel there should be more research on dummy's before advice is published?

Maybe it is loose evidence but what if they held onto it for a few years whilsd they further investigated it to find yes it absolutely reduces the risk. Would parents not all be up in arms if they then said "Yes we've known for years that dummy's could prevent SIDS but we didn't say until we are absolutely sure"

I don't think it is comparible to the MMR study as the potential risk of NOT vacinating could lead to the death of a child. Although there may be problems assosiated with using a dummy they are not life threatening ones.

Is it the corporate sponsorship that makes this advice seem less valid somehow?

yurt1 · 21/02/2008 15:24

Unbelievable.

Empathy: understanding another person's feelings by remembering or imagining being in a similar situation.

It's not that difficult. Or perhaps it is

OracleInaCoracle · 21/02/2008 15:24

actually, i thought she behaved with dignity. why not just let her leave and re-read this thread, maybe you will see why everyone is so shocked by your comments.

Disenchanted · 21/02/2008 15:24

Noone is judging your LIFE TDWP or the things you have done throughout it. Im sure youve done many lovely things and the two you mentioned are wonderful things to have done.

But I will judge your COMMENTS and FLIPPANT ATTITUDE towards GGG and her heartbreaking experience on this thread and its disgusting.

Shame on you, seriously.

RubySlippers · 21/02/2008 15:25

mrsR - there is no clear reason why it works

FSID sent me their newsletter at Xmas with this new advice in ... will try to find it

FFS, I am totally disgusted at that comment - are you being serious??

Im reporting you.

SheikYerbouti · 21/02/2008 15:25

FFS, TDWP.

Again, you are reacting aggressively.

I didn't take ggg's post as a plea for sympathy. Quite the opposite in fact. She bowed out graciously IMHO

mrsruffallo · 21/02/2008 15:26

I don't think that corporate sponsorship has a place in healthcare, no
TBH I don't know enough about the research to state whether I find it valid or not.
I just don't know anyone that uses a dummy so it must be a samll minority who do and that is why I am interested in the source of the claims.
I don't see whty I should just believe everything I read

RubySlippers · 21/02/2008 15:27

TDWP - think you need to step away from this thread and cool off a bit

2shoes · 21/02/2008 15:27

AT some of the things said on this thread.

MrsR try searching the BBC website- I remember when this research first came out it was quite widely reported.

OracleInaCoracle · 21/02/2008 15:28

am reporting this thread.

nasty and insensitive imo

mrsruffallo · 21/02/2008 15:28

Thanks Ruby Slippers- I read your comments after I postedxx

RubySlippers · 21/02/2008 15:28

corporate sponsorship can allow research to happen and then publicise it

it is a tricky road to go down

Disenchanted · 21/02/2008 15:28

Ive reported this thread, or should I say some of the comments on it

ConnorTraceptive · 21/02/2008 15:28

Oh ok lots been said since my attempt to go back to original debate

Was going to ignore the ggg because I don't think originally you meant to offend, just very badly worded your post (and you wouldn't be the first guilty of that)

BUT your 15:21 post well sorry that was just a really prickish thing to type it really was.

RosJ · 21/02/2008 15:29

On the issue itself-I quite agree with TDWP. The discussion on the UNICEF web page shows that there is no causal link with dummy use as such and a reduction in SIDS-but an apparent connection between stopping using a dummy and SIDS.

That something is "scientific" is never justification enough-there are always debates within science, and different ways of interpreting evidence, and in this case of dummies, the media-and FSID-have taken up the "evidence" in a very simplistic way.

MirandaG · 21/02/2008 15:29

So should I be giving my six month old a dummy now or are the risks of cot death greatly reduced now that she has reached this age? May not be relevant because she won't take a bottle, so unlikely to take a soother, but that's another story...

hunkermunker · 21/02/2008 15:30

I wrote about this the other day wrt establishing breastfeeding if anyone's interested.

TDWP, stop posting so aggressively and defensively. Go and do some deep breathing or something - you'll end up posting yourself into a corner otherwise.

SheikYerbouti · 21/02/2008 15:31

Can I draw a line under it?

Can I? Can I?
