To think FSID shouldn't be promoting the use of dummies?

here

I think the advice is based on very loose research evidence and they are wrong to suggest your child is unsafe if you do not use one.

If your baby is a dummy user it is unlikely that you'd put them to sleep without one (trust me, neither the baby nor parent would get much sleep) until you were trying to wean them off it at a later date when the incidence of SIDS has declined somewhat.

Neither my dentist nor my dh's dentist predicted any problems unless the dummy remained in regular use until say school age and I saw someone post on MN that even an orthodontist wasn't worried about using a dummy in small children/babies.

I didn't know that babies could retain a dummy in their mouths when newborn so I can't comment on the interfering with establishing breastfeeding.

Routine replacement of dummies before they show signs of wear and tear should prevent the possibility of accidents and airway obstruction.

TBH I've had never heard of there being an increased risk of ear infections in dummy using babies but it must be possible. Presumably ensuring dummies are sterilised regularly should minimise this matter.

MrsR - my DS has a dummy - am I old fashioned?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 14:59

ggg theres no need to be like that

OP posts:
SheikYerbouti · 21/02/2008 15:00

Just leave her alone ffs.

SheikYerbouti · 21/02/2008 15:01

I'm old fashioned too Kewcumber. Twice over

fryalot · 21/02/2008 15:02

TDWP - how do you expect her to be?

I know that you explained about your post, but intended or not, it was quite possibly the most insensitive thing I have ever seen. Not at all surprised that ggg is leaving the thread.

Just hope that she doesn't think that the rest of us are so unfeeling.

mrsruffallo · 21/02/2008 15:02

I don't know, kew. I just didn't think that people used them anymore

mrsruffallo · 21/02/2008 15:03

Agree squonk. Unnecessarily abrupt tdwp

Agreed, LL

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 15:07

Ye another reason why mumsnet is starting to become clogged full of threads that are essentially inane bullshit (though I do love those).
What's the point in opening a debate if you just get attacked, why should I not defend my point and opinion?. Yet now I look like the 'baddy'.

If this is what motherhood does to women then maybe those sexist employers are right and we should all be sterilised.

Why can we not have a reasonable intelligent discussion without emotion and taking sides?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 15:08

X posts sheik and LL. I know it's an emotive topic but why not discuss it?
I have nothing against you, or anyone here, why would I.
I would just like to see some more reasoned debate on here with facts to back up the claims people make.

Then try to be a little less agressive when peole ask you something

I would havbeen quite happy to explain further,, had you said "What makes yousk that question, Sheik?" arther than being told that I (or rather my questions) was stupid

Surely reasoned debate is not somebody getting a piss on when they are disagreed with

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 15:11

Sqounk that was an awful mispost, I have apologised, what do you want from me?

should we never discuss SIDS again on here because someone has gone through it? Should I never get pregnant again in case someone who is infertile takes offense? ffs.

OP posts:
Disenchanted · 21/02/2008 15:12

My god.

Im saying nothing but

fryalot · 21/02/2008 15:13

It was an awful mispost, you apologised.

What I want from you is not to question why the person you offended is subsequently leaving the thread.

That's all.

One of my babies was born a few days before Anne Diamonds baby (he sadly was a victim of cot death and she spearheaded the back to sleep campaign)

So I was in the middle of things changing. Back to sleep made a huge difference to the numbers of babies dying from SIDs. I understand that advice regarding smoking, feet at the end of the cot and duvet/cot bumper use. If this research says it can make a difference then good! One day we may have enough research that will stop the sadness of SIDs and it will be no more. Anyone that berates this research is just pathetic. Dummies aren't evil and imo its just snobbish to revoke them

Most children don't have future problems from dummies, teeth aren't a big problem as long as the dummy use has stopped before milk teeth fall out. Thumbsucking on the other hand does cause jaw/teeth issues as that tends to continue for longer

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 15:16

'so unfeeling'
like I was when I nursed my venomous MIL through cervical cancer because the rest of her family had turned against her and didn't even care?
or when I was the only person who wanted to hold and help dress and bathe my sisters stillborn daughter with her when even her husband couldn't bring himself to do it?

You know nothing about me please do not judge me.

OP posts:
fryalot · 21/02/2008 15:17

I am not saying you are unfeeling.

I am saying that the way that you have treated ggg today was unfeeling.

Which it was.

mrsruffallo · 21/02/2008 15:18

I have not heard the evidence re dummies before and would like to see the evidence and research before I take it on board. Does anyone have this evidence?
