To think FSID shouldn't be promoting the use of dummies?

here

I think the advice is based on very loose research evidence and they are wrong to suggest your child is unsafe if you do not use one.

I thought it would only reduce the risk in a Baby that is already a dummyuser...i.e. that it is discouraged to take the dummy away at a young age, if that is what they are used too

SheikYerbouti · 21/02/2008 14:32

So, TDWP, would you stop a baby from sucking their thumb as well?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 14:32

ggglmp but those were based on a much wider and more substantial body of evidence, whereas this is relatively new researh and I just think that the message FSID is giving is wrong.

Sheik what a stupid question, ask me an intelligent one and I will respond in kind.

I'll appreciate it if you wouldn't call me stupid, thank you.

Stop being so obtuse.

I asked a pertinent and relevant question (IMHO)

Of course I wouldn't stop a baby sucking it's thumb, why would I. Why would you ask that (hence, stupid/ ill thought out question)
just as I don't object to babies using dummies.
I object to the suggestion that if you don't you are somewhow threatening your babies life.

fwiw - when ds was born (he's now 2.5) I was told to give him a dummy as it reduced the risk of cot death.

So the advice has been out there for a couple of years at least.

The study authors write, "It seems appropriate to stop discouraging the use of pacifiers,"

Oh so they must have very conclusive evidence to PROMOTE their then.

But FSID are not saying that.

They are giving information based on a clinical and scientific study.

Corporate sponsorship is a fact of life, and if it gives an important charity more funds to continue their work, then so be it, in my book

You haven't actually said until now that you haven't got anything against dummies. Your posts make it seem like this is the case, hence my stupid question

Do people still use dummies? Quite old fashioned isn't it?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 21/02/2008 14:48

ggglmp I know what happened to your daughter, a sad and devestat+ing story but not relevant here.

Just who knows what the statistics are for people who ignore the fsids guidelines? Of course no one would undertake such a study under controlled circumstances so it will never be known.

I think they are random and sad events which very little can be done to help. The 'preventative' measures can help but many have stuck to them religiously and still lost a child.

I was never aggressive I just think that question was crap tbh. Why not spend a couple more minutes typing out a post actually explaining what she meant if she cared so much?

''ggglmp I know what happened to your daughter, a sad and devestat+ing story but not relevant here.''
was of course never meant te be posted as it reads.

the 'not relevant here' refers to some of the comments below, but my post got mixed up thanks to DD hitting the keyboard..
